Sumantra - you won a better than 5% award in another category:
http://www.pixoto.com/awards/70280703 which means you have graduated from the Novice Only category.

I've been on the site for 2 days, am a complete novice/hobbiest, have no chance of competing against the overly processed images of the pro/stock people, and seem to have lost the ability to post in the novices only categor, I think because I took a half decent shot of my niece at xmas a few years ago. Why would I be instantly moved from novices only after 2 days. I'm clearly a novice, I use picassa's I'm feeling lucky button as I have no idea how to process an image.

I'm curious to know about the decision making process to instantly move people out of the novice category. Thanks for your time and input. Ian

in addition to my comment below- I also dislike overly processed images- I use photoshop - but I like realism in photos... I don't think I'm the only one. Your pure out of camera images are great.

Hi Latefine,

If an image is entered into a category OTHER than Novice and wins an award of Top 5% or better, the Player is no longer allowed to Submit in the Novice category.

If you have only been on the site two days and only in Novices there might be a problem. Can you link me to your Pixoto profile page please?

I was unsure of how to use the site and uploaded some images to novices only, and some to other parts which were not in the novices only section. I don't think any of my images won top 5% awards at all.

Cheers, and thanks for the great response time, nice to see.

It looks like you won 7th place in Babies and Children with http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra... that image, which is great, the expression on her face is fantastic, is the one that boosted you out of Novices.

I really do have to disagree with you regarding the quality of your images, many of them are lovely. You have some really great wildlife shots that are hard to get..the elk, the bear, the diving osprey, the pouncing Coyote! WOW! I shoot some wildlife too and I know how hard it is to capture some of that stuff, heck first you have to find it!

Anyway, you shouldn't be so quick to say you can't compete, I think many of your images can.

Ian, you may be new to photography but your work is far from novice. Like Sherry said, you will have no problem competing with the big boys, you have a great eye.

While I appreciate the compliments, the gap between what I produce, which is truly novice photography, and what the pro's on pixoto produce, is massive.

Instantly forcing me into another category makes me question how long I'll be part of a community like this.

Novices, Amateurs, Professionals/Stock, perhaps would better suit the community.

Graduate people who finish consistently in the upper echelon, not just once from Novices, to Amateurs, then once they've won consistently in Amateurs, flip them into Pro/Stock.

You also need to take in to consideration the equipment the pros use. I can't afford $5000 for a camera body plus another $5000.00 for a lens to capture the nose hairs of an osprey at 500 yards. Maybe someday, but not at this point in my life, Sad to say but that high priced gear is high priced for a reason, they get a much higher resolution image than I do with my D90.

Just don't lose faith, give it a shot, I think you will do well :)

Haha...that made me laugh Sherry! I didn't know that Osprey had nose hairs? But I understand your point!

Honestly Latefine- I think your images could stand up to competition as well as mine. I am a professional- I shoot babies and weddings primarily- and your animal photos are better than mine. Not all of us win in the upper echelon here (as you call it)...but (if I may be sarcastic here... I often am) if you'd like to win, try taking a photo of a lotus flower or some coloured pencils....
Most of us are here because we love photography and we love looking at eachothers work. I was a bit intimidated at first by some of the gorgeous stuff here, but you'd be surprised at how much people will like your work. Sherry is right that you captured a clear crisp image of the girl on the toboggan- I think I actually voted for it in a duel- her expression was perfect, and the image made top 10. I think you might have more make top 10 than you think.

I live on Vancouver Island, we're fresh out of Lotus Flowers, and I'm not rascist, so I would never call a pencil coloured. :)

Alright, I'll strive to produce the best images I can, thanks for the kind words.

ah, another kindly sarcastic Canadian. Welcome.
I've heard Vancouver Island is gorgeous- I look forward to seeing your work.
