I am wondering the logic of having subcategories if the duels are not going to feature two photos from the subcategories.

I realize that you are probably trying to find the photo that will win the overall category, but perhaps you need to make the duels come from the subcategory only.

Here's one of my own examples. I submitted this photo to Landscapes and Nature under Weather, a category which I've noticed quite a number of submissions do run through, and often many seem to be miscategorized.

I did not submit this to Landscapes and Nature under Cities, Towns and Villages, yet this image below, was in the duel list:

This image has nothing to do with weather, but probably would be best placed in architecture and design.

I give up trying to figure this out. I'm just an amateur photographer who does this as a hobby. But my logic says that these two photos dueling just doesn't make sense.

I'm wondering the same thing: how do the subcategories have impact on the duelling?
If there's no purpose to them in the duelling algorythm, wouldn't it be better to get rid of them (and with them frustration about images being in the wrong subcategory)?
Or are they here mainly to make it clearer to people where their pictures should go?

Sorry for the late response. Subcategories are factored into the algorithm and images play most of they duels with-in the subcategory. That said they play enough outside of the subcategories that we can balance the scores overall for the category. Subcategories also help users find the the types of images that they are interested in.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answer!
I personally think it would be better to wait longer before pairing duels outside the subcategory. It's frustrating to have an image paused after 6 votes when half of the votes were against a different subcategory. I understand the need for balancing the overall score for the category but I think that could happen later, when the ImageScore within the subcategory has stabilised more.
