what I read Pixoto is losing credibility , and i am starting to understand why, as I spent 3 hours up loading and naming filling in to up load 12 photos for the baby animals . only to find a host of e mails with in seconds of up loading to say they been paused, This seem a bit of a scam to get us to use point and up grade to Pro, where as i was told in my fists week i made pro level and have pro account due to the fast points accumulated. Are you going back on your word. I will see if I can dig out the e mail. ? and what about my photos I just up loaded?

Gary - I'm sorry for the frustration. We have not changed our pausing algorithms in over a year (i.e. before we even had pro accounts).

We try to get image votes as quickly as we can - which also leads to them being paused quickly.

from our about page:
Why is my image “Paused”?
Images get paused if they are statistically unlikely to move up to the top 10% of all images (approximately 615 ImageScore). Sometimes we determine this within this within 6 duels sometimes it takes 100. The key is that in order to provide good clarity into which images are in the top 10 we must vote the best images a lot. With a limited amount of duels available to us the best way to accomplish this is by pausing images once we’ve determined that they are not likely to get near the top. We use statistics so by definition we are not 100% confident that the image should be paused and so to address this issue we added the “get more votes” feature (the “play” button on the leaderboards). Under certain circumstances Paused images may still be placed in to duels and may be unpaused automatically.

Sorry i do not except that as the e mail with notification came through with in a few seconds of up loading, Im not BS , literally as soon as they up loaded a list of e mails came back. not even giving time for them to be viewed. or judged ,pr examined. Most taken on 1d or 7d with L lenses. none of your photoshopping that so many with HDR seem to get highly rated. if you want high end photoshopped images and falls over touched photography, then you should state this.

Gary, how many duels did your image get in a few seconds? Sometimes my images get 7 duels before I can even refresh my screen.

I wonder if the "pause" emails are making people aware of something that has always been a part of pixoto. So many people are upset about it, but it's the same way of doing things.
Pausing means many things. In a small category, if they don't pause, your image duels will compete against the same image multiple times (I saw that with my own photo in the Mothers Day caption category- so few entries that I must have competed 5 times with one rose photo!) That really isn't meaningful competition. Also, as Jason said- the first images they duel your image against are usually good predictors of where your picture might end up. I don't pretend to understand the complexities, but they are fairly accurate. If you look at the leaderboards, most days it is split between pros and non-pros.

I think people need to know that even "pro" members get the equivilent of "paused" sometimes- they just don't see a pause button because they will get votes again eventually. Some of my lower ranked images get 10 votes or so, and then nothing happens for a few hours, then a few more votes... then it just trickles in. Sometimes it takes me days to get 100 votes- and truthfully, if it got up to around 400 at around 10 votes...it just hung out there and never changed. Their predictions were true- and if I was a non-pro member- then it might have got to 400 after 10 votes and been paused, and not wasted 90 duels to see if it stayed there. I became a pro so I could see image duels- not for 100 duels. I vote enough (because I LOVE voting) that I currently have almost 6000 credits. If I wasn't pro, that would be enough to boost the votes on a lot of photos!

Gary, I would suggest you stick around for awhile- upload a few images per day in different categories and watch them. You'll start to see patterns and recognize what might make a winning image. Don't give up on the first try!!! I look forward to seeing some of you work! And if you check the forum, you notice that LOTS of us here gripe about bad HDR and photoshop alot- sometimes they make the top 10, but sometimes pure images get there too!!! This is a fun site.If you're another pure photog, you can only make it better too!

Jason Kiefer,

The explanation for images doesn't really make sense because I have images I just added get paused when their scores haves already exceeded images that I have uploaded a while ago that are still not paused. I am curios how this explanation could help me understand why one of my older images standing at 35 duels with 200 points is not paused when I just uploaded a picture that has less duels but a more points is paused. Please help me understand this, I really like this site but very aggravated with this pausing feature.

To be honest I did not receive the pauses until I received my Happy One month Anniversary fro pixoto. Kind of funny how all of a sudden I put photos up and they get paused but get tons of upgrade to pro stuff. Pixoto with every 5 duels and pause is very rapidly losing their validity with me and I am about to be on the first this out of this....I just had anoth photo frozen after only 6 duels and I had more wins than losses. You go through credits a lot faster than before. I vote like crazy and yet with all this pausing and other features they run out sooo fast and of course the site says well you can always buy more...KIND OF FISHY SINCE THE ONE MONTH EMAIL...I AM JUST SAYING....NOT HAPPY WITH THIS!

Hello Josh, even though older photos will not show paused button, they will no longer receive duels. As Jason has already explained (and as it is stated in About us page), if image is statistically unlikely to move up to the top 10% of all images it will be paused.
Win/loss ration can not be used to determine image score. Please read this page:

I hope this helps.

"if an image is statistically not likely to move up to top 10% of all images, it will be paused"

The point of Pixoto it to find "The best images" Yeh?.......And considering we all know how subjective art and photography is......Pixoto believes that as little as 6 votes will determine this?

You couldn't be further from the truth.... And repeating your stance on this, is nothing short of amateurish.
