Why are my almost-top-ranked pictures receiving fewer duels than those ranked just above and below?

I have a couple of photos in the lead in the weekly contests and they aren't getting as many image duels as the photos ahead and behind them. Here's one example:

http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

#1 photo, 731 points, 117 duels
#2 photo, 712 points, 54 duels (mine)
#3 photo, 660 points, 71 duels
#4 photo, 648 points, 71 duels
#5 photo, 643 points, 117 duels

And here's another example:

http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

#1 photo, 815 points, 141 duels
794 144
752 79 (mine)
750 96
738 92
722 71 (mine)
715 74 (mine)
715 104
708 113
706 151
697 119
696 102
695 101

Notice how my photos have significantly fewer duels than the photos above *and* below them. And most of the photographers *do not* have pro accounts.

Hello Matthew, do you use boosting on your images?

No, do you mean to suggest that by using boosting a photographer can essentially buy a higher score and therefore win a competition?

boosting only cost points, and you earn credits by voting on photos. You can buy points, which worries me that some people are buying credits and not voting. Voting is time consuming, but at least it's hopefully fair.

Matthew, more duels doesn't mean higher score.

Please see this page: http://www.pixoto.com/about

Specifically this part:
"...The ultimate number of votes that an image gets is dependent on its early dueling history. The more early wins an image has the higher its ImageScore will go and the more duels it will ultimately receive. The highest rated unpaused images on the site will end up with four times (or more) duels than the lowest. After the first 50 duels or so the change in ImageScore with each additional duel slows down. Essentially the first 50 or so duels define the approximate area of the leaderboard an image should be and the remaining duels refine that placement. We are primarily focused on refining the scores of the top image – which is the reason for the disproportionate number of duels to those types of images."

So in short, after the first 50 or so duels image has essentially "find" its position on leaderboard and additional duels only just refines the possition.

Boosting image will get you more image duels, but it also doesn't mean the score will be higher.

I hope this helps.
