Is there anyone who likes the current method of selecting the "Best Photographers of the Year"?

(The current method takes into consideration only a photographer's top ten images in any category.)

Well I have always made my feelings very clear on the subject !

I think its an insult to the photographers who spend all year Working there way to the top of the leader board which is exactly what Pixoto expect and encourage us to do ! only to find it is meaningless at the end of the year !!!

why are the best Photographs ! which is what they are !! called the best Photographer ??

Personally I wish that before they give that award they check the profiles for all the duplicates etc that seem to be there.

That's a completely separate issue, just because the images are high ranking photographers work it should not be assumed they are dupes !

Mind you we will never get an answer this is the third year it has been "discussed" and we have never got passed "we will look into it when we have time" although last year we did get a " we had thought about giving a second set of awards for the leader board" but that also fell in the bracket of when we get time to look into it" ie. never !

Still You never know one day ? just don't hold your breath after all its not our site we just use it !!!

I'm not assuming all high ranking photographers have duplicates, I'm just going from the several cases I've seen of the photographer of the year having duplicates in their profiles.

the current method is fine with me but i wanna suggest and add that in order for a tog to be qualified for the current method he or she must have 500 images or more in his/her profile to be fair to those who striving hard in their photography.
i suggested this 'cuz there are photographer of the year who has less than a hundred images in their portfolio.

I object more to the name if they insist on using this method to select the so called Best Photographers !

I have been in the top 10 in animals for the last 3 years, i am still in the top 10 this year but i will not score in the top 20 photographers because some other togs will have 10 lucky shots that score high over the year ! That's 10 images out of a possible 365 daily competitions ??? Less than 3% of the minimum that could be entered !

Some of the winners are actually top rated and deserve the award but not all ! Change the name to suit the award "Best Photographs" that is what they are !! stop insulting the photographers who are the top of the leader board where Pixoto ask us to aim for the actual "Top Photographers" !

I think it should be based on points. I think pretty much everyone agrees with that, and I think pretty much everyone is baffled by the current method.

I have made the same suggestion for the last two years, change the name of the existing award which is a legitimate way of awarding the highest scoring photographs, and not photographers, admittedly it needs to be made clearer how to achieve it and not just a last minute message at the end of December ! but we already have a method that clearly shows the top ranked photographers in the year, the Leader Boards that Pixoto encourage us to use and allot us points for our photos so we can be ranked by our success throughout t he year !

If it is based on points my point about duplicates becomes even more valid.

Maybe broadening the base from the average of the top10 to top 25 would be better.
It would lower the score of those who just had a few great photos in a category. It would also, eliminate togs who entered scores of mediocre photos and had a very high personal score, but not a lot of exceptional photos.

To stay in the top 10 in the leader board you have to regularly get top 10 placed images as well as 5% images on monthly awards all year ! none of the other awards will give you the amount of points needed to achieve and maintain a top 10 place !

To win the so called "best photographer of the year" you just need 10 good scoring shots its got nothing to do with duplicates, you couldn't have enough to sway the score and they are picked up elsewhere, its got nothing to do with 10 or 25 as an average its a plane simple why invent a system when there is already one there ?

just change the dam name to best photographs, that's what they are !! if you want the top photographers use the leader board its been there all year every year to ignore it and invent another top Photographers list is an insult to anyone who spends time and effort scaling and maintaining there position, a position that Pixoto suggest we strive for after all what else are the points we win used for other than to scale the leader board aiming to get as high as we can !!

Averaging all of a togs photo score by the number of submissions with a prerequisite number of photos might show who is consitantly top in the category.

Looking at the leader board shows who is constantly top of the category,

with points values of 17 points for a 20% or 135 for a 5% in the daily awards you can not get to the scores needed to be at the top of the leader board the only way to get the kind of scores in animals for instance is to consistently get top 10 places and top 5% places in the monthly awards !

Averaging half a dozen images to see,,,,, which ones do you pick ? i have had the odd bad week ! pick those weeks and my scores are down but i am in 4th place on the animals leader board consistently high scoring got me there but not necessarilly 750 + scores !!!.

The only thing averaging individual images shows is which is the best images ! that dose not make the people who took them the best of the year just the best Photographs !!

I notice there is no input from the upper echelons which is an indicator of the chances of anything being done ? so i assume its all back to the usual !

Being as this subject is "Discussed" every year in several separate threads, and the normal response is that its "too late to do anything" ? Is there any chance it might get some serious consideration being as we have 4 months this time to look into it ?

Ralph, when you say look at the leaderboard, are you talking about points earned during the course of the year in each category, and is this how you are suggesting that Pixoto base their Best Photographers of the Year? I don't see how one can tell how many points they have accrued for the year since nowhere do I see a current tally for 2014.

Thanks for the link, Ralph, but could you tell me where I can find these stats for 2014? When I go the Top Players>Animals I see stats for 2011-2013 but no 2014.

On the photography page, click "top players", from that page click "all locations", then click "select a country" (but just click "SELECT A COUNTRY" instead of specific country). Then click "apply". This time you will get the last week ranking, click again "all locations" then click "apply". This time you will get the 2014 ranking.

take your top ten images and divide that by ten that is your average score used to determine banners , so I would put money on you getting one, your images score nicely as they should :D
