What is Pixoto's stand on the use of possible cruelty to animals in order to stage photographs

The staging of animals to create images has been around for a long time. If done humanly and in a natural pose/environment i have nothing against this type of photography.

When looking at some of the images (mainly frogs/lizards) there seems to be a number of images that have been staged , the animals have been put into unnatural comical positions for human consumption, i assume this is done by some form of restraints (string/thin wire) which is later removed in photoshop

I'd say there's a good chance there's been a visit ti Ye Good Olde Photo Shoppe for many of these ;-)

Agreed though - I hate the thought of making animals suffer :-(

I'm totally with you on this subject, Will. I always thought these shots of red-eyed tree frogs in unnatural poses, whom some togs here have made a living off of here on Pixoto, were either posed or manipulated through photoshop and it's Warp feature. Unfortunately, there is no rule on Pixoto stating that it's against their policy to pose animals, regardless whether it amounts to abuse or not. Those who do get these incredible images will just respond that togs pose dogs and cats so why not a lowly frog. To me, it seems way out of bounds to resort to this, just to win a contest, but I don't know how Pixoto could ever prove they have been posed and, more importantly, abused during the process.

Oh please, how can frogs hanging in the air and standing on one toe NOT be posed?
And if they have been so heavily photoshopped that the pose of the creatures has been changed, then they should be in Digital art and not in the animal category...either way, it's not right.

I am not against the posing of animals as long as it is natural and done with the care of the animal being utmost, however the use of restraints in order to achieve this is cruel. I think we would all be aghast if togs use restraints on cats and dogs in order to to make similar images. If you look closely at some of these images their limbs are on a single plane. How do you think this was achieved, certainly not a natural movement captured in the moment. There is no need to prove this point, just make a stand that these type of images are unacceptable.

I know National Geographic has awarded one of the togs in the past, however with recent information coming to light i doubt whether this will happen again.

I think i will pass this onto the ASPCA to ask their opinion.

Unfortunately I have to agree with John on this. While I personally don't like, or condone, the practice I don't feel it is our place to make these types of value judgments. I'm also pretty sure there is no way we can prove it - especially since the photographer seems to deny it...

Oh and of course we all know the photographers, especially on Pixoto, never lie, right?
I think it would be quite easy to simply make a rule stating that any photos of animals in a non-natural poses will be deleted. This way it would cover your asses if some animal defense association takes a closer look at those disgusting portfolios and accuses you to encourage this kind of practice by offering cash prizes to the winners..
How about taking a stand, Pixoto? After all, it's your site, right? Then I'd say you can dictate any rules you want!

If it isn't "our place" to make these "value judgements", whose place is it? It is completely unacceptable to torment or even kill animals simply to get a picture.

Glad to see someone bring this up... And since we are on the subject - what's with all the sick looking cats people post pictures of, with runny eyes and caked-with-snot noses, and almost worse, the terribly stressed looking kittens that someone posts a million pics of? Cats/kittens who are panting and open mouth breathing are generally very stressed. Every time I see one of these photos, it irritates me all over again.

I'd like to hear some thoughts from Pixoto stuff...the silence is deafening. As usual whenever a sensitive topic is brought up.

My response is unchanged from above.   This is not something we can moderate.

Yep...this is something you don't WANT to moderate. Very disappointing.I hope some animal defense organisation will be in touch with you.
