Sub-Categories Mixing in Voting

Seriously? Why do we do sub-categories if they are intermingled? I can't believe that I posted in Transportation-Boats and lost to something in Transportation-Other. I thought the point of sub-categories was to have fair voting. You might as well not even use the sub-categories.

Although I do understand Pixoto's reasoning behind this - I am starting to really hope that Pixoto starts to increase the numbers of categories in order to improve the issues attached to having a few categories with LARGE numbers of very diverse submissions

Search threads on the forum to understand the various aspects and answers.

Hope Pixoto increases the number of categories soon.

Macro - stand alone category
Birds - ditto
Insects and spiders - ditto
Flowers - ditto
which others?

In short - all over-subscribed sub-categories need to be fleshed out into larger stand-alone categories - this will also reduce the problems faced by the annual awards when trying to identify winners from hundreds of thousands of submissions for the larger existing categories.

Hah hah hah hah hah hah - I nearly choked on my coffee!

Good idea though... with sub categories such as:

Lotus with waterdrops
Lotus without waterdrops
Lotus with insect
Insect-free lotus
Lotus in natural habitat
Lotus reflections
Lotus in studio
Lotus in lotus position
etc.

They have been extremely well documented, I think we can let them rest now. There is not a single aspect of the lotus flower that has escaped being posted to Pixoto, in fact I think this site must be the worlds foremost repository of such images, quite an accomplishment!

As usual, the last sub-category will be "Lotus - Others".
For example, this will be for those photos of:
- Lotus with a Cat (but don't want to compete in Cat category)
- Lotus on vacation (but maybe does not meet criteria for Landscape - Travel)
- Lotus Car (doing anything to avoid competing in Transportation category)
- Lotus behind the ear of a pretty girl (you know it's hard to compete in People category)
- and of course there will be Gerbers (the photo came with title "Friends of Lotus")

Oops, sorry :D
That wasn't a Lotus Juice in a Glass with Pink Umbrella (not submitted under Food and Drink), was it?

On a rather serious note, I would like to see a "Night Photography" category.
Choosing between a daylight and a night photo of the same object (e.g. the same building) is really down to personal preference. Both can be equally stunning and yet some people prefer daylight and others prefer night photos.

I agree with above posts, that some of the current categories are too wide.
Check out the City/Street/Park category and see how weird is the competition and how wide the category has become. Here's what I saw:
- a boat
- people on the street
- city skyline
- building on the riverside
- a road with trees on the side
- interior of a shopping mall
- graffiti (hey did they stop submitting graffiti under Street Art category?)
- a staircase (seriously?), presumably on a park (just to fit it with the category)
- water splash (wow ... can't imagine what people can fit in this category ... the possibility is endless)
- a water faucet (looking at the link on my browser, just to ensure that I'm still browsing the same category)

Nope it wasn't Lotus Juice in a Glass with Pink Umbrella (not submitted under Food and Drink) it was iced lotus tea next to a close up of a deckchair on a beach - not submitted as one might suspect under City street and park: skylines, but under Transport: Boats (on closer inspection - that spot on the horizon is a sail...)

For some reason Pixoto seems to believe that the need for a Night Photography "sub-"category has been fulfilled by amending the landscapes Space & Astronomy to Nightscapes.(http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...)

Pixoto seriously needs to look very closely - and SOON - at addressing the categories. My guess is that a large percentage of their time at present is taken up in trying to address the issues of the 2012 awards.

Yep, saw that post about Nightscapes and tried to post night photos of cityscape/buildings in that sub-category ... mostly couldn't get beyond 500-ish. My photos were beaten to pulp by sunset photos coming from Sunset sub-category ...

So now I post them under City category, and let them compete with the faucet, the water splash, and the cute girl on the street ... sighs

Maybe one day?

You take wonderful photos! Did a browse yesterday before shutting down and spotted a whole load of "gee-wows" - lovely stuff. One of the reasons why I keep suggesting that Pixoto allows for players to host a "stock" portfolio as well as a "competition" portfolio - Pixoto (and the players) are losing out on some excellent images which do not have the popular vote.

I totally agree. Today I posted a flower and I observe the duels. My pics has only duels with the same flower again and again. Maybe they are too many of them. One is beautiful. Too many are boring. But it's the same problem since beginning of 2012. Some togs win an award with a picture and will always post them in all variations. Is this what we call now creativity???
