the still life category is very confusing and has become a catch all i read the description set by pixoto " The still life subcategory can be used when there are two or more objects in an unnatural setting as the subject."
need a better category title especially with the new still life challenge, i dont think anyone really knows what this is

Hello Heather, Still life is subcategory, and we don't usually describe subcategories but categories only. Definition for Still life subcategory was placed to allow natural objects to compete in Artistic object category if they are in unnatural settings.
Do you maybe have better definition of Still life subcategory?

In the Community Challenge "Still life" there has been some good definitions in the comments on the subject. Would it be possible for Pixoto to use some of these terms and clarify what still life is and what it isn't. Many Pixoto members have now totally wrong assumptions of the category.

Mia - I put this on the "Idea" blog page hoping it would help. No Pixoto employees have made any comments.

thank you for replying, i do not have a better definition that;s part of the problem the category has become a catch all because no one knows what it is or has a different definition
when i think still life i only know of paintings of fruit on a table lol
i google still life get : "A still life is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural or man-made." Wikipedia
another example easier to understand is
"Still Life images can be just about anything that doesn't move. These include inanimate objects, flowers, food, etc. They are life forms but they don’t move."
i would recommend that as a definition
the problem is on the leaderboard in still life we have everything from someone making pottery, splashes.....its just a mess and i don't know what to report or not

Webster: "the category of subject matter in which inanimate objects are represented, as in painting or photography."

i.e., if a photo represents movement then it is not "still".

I'm with Heather on this -- Still Life means "still" or "inanimate" and there are many "action" images in this category as a means of a catch all. Maybe I'm old school but why would these photos be considered "still life"?

Seriously -- how is it that togs think all the water action is "inanimate"? Water splashes need it's own category or forced to put into proper category. They are not "still"!!!!

Maybe the competition is two steep so that enter their water drops and splashes in Artistic Objects because that is as hard to define as "Still Life." :)
