Pixoto you have a problem, a big problem. I doubt I need to elaborate further, but just in case...6 water lilies in the top 10 for this week? Really? It's the same for this months leaderboard. Potential customers are going to start believing Pixoto specialises in water lilies. I'm sick of the sight of them. What's worse is they are forcing the rest of us to submit as many variations of our best received images as we can just to compete, so it's snowballing. Remove the damn cash prizes PLEASE!!! Enough of us have requested this that someone should be listening and responding! And please seriously consider a cap on how many images of a specific subject type can be submitted by any one person.

Community, if you agree with this please show your support so Pixoto can see the extent of the problem....

I'm not convinced the cash prize is the total issue.. but I do think that the money is a major incentive to try to win any way you can...and if that means the same photo or photos so similar that it takes a magnification to determine if its a duplicate.. then it is time to figure out a new approach.

suggestion:....Cash prizes are given out ...what weekly? maybe if you win a cash price in a specific category/subcategory.. then you would not be eligible to win a prize in that same category again until the next month or 30 days have passed.

or take the cash price competition and run it separate and have a nonprize competition that is only about the glory of achieving a win....

I dont ;like the idea of limiting the number of photos you can submit into any category as some people have suggested from time to time, because...you should not punish all... for just a few... .. address the real issue.. and (tongue in cheek here) ban the friggin water lilies....lol

I agree, cash prizes does make one submit variations of the winning image, but limiting the number of images of the same subject would not be a good idea as people specialize in certain subjects.

Maybe not a limit on type but a daily or weekly limit......

Taking pictures of birds of prey is one thing, provided they are different types of birds it wouldn't cause this kind of issue. If you specialise in flowers, why not take variety. A limit on species would help. And quite frankly, just because you specialise in a subject doesn't mean you have to enter every one into the competition....

I agree with you Darrell... i came here because I wanted to ask these people "do they have eyes" to see that every day the same flowers are on the top...it is so boring and I'm gonna hate pixoto because of that!!!

Have the cash prize on the weekly competition? The "cold drinks", or whatever themed one?

Would surely have the double bonus of distracting the water lilly people and provoking them to vary their submissions?

Then everybody else can get on with enjoying winning for the photo itself!

Ah, I hadn't considered the cash prize as the reasoning behind the omnipresent blue lotuses. Sounds at least plausible. So ditch it.

I'm still baffled as to who is actually voting for them, however...

You and me both! Lately there's been a lot of crap floating to the top of the daily competitions. Most of it gets filtered out by the weeklies, but those "lotus" flowers (they're not lotus, the lotus plant is similar to water lily but the flower looks much different) stick to the top like dog poo on your shoe.

THIS is a real lotus: http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

Blue Egyptian water lily, blue lotus, nymphaea caerulea, Same same.

Not that it matters one tiny jot, natch. They must die! (Or, you know, just go away ;)

I had the same argument about Sheep and trains it all boils down to the same thing just to damn many submissions! If it would guarantee that more was better it would be great! But the fact is it just pollutes the results of the voting and wastes more time(mine and yours) voting on all the crappy images!

There has to be some control over these multiple shots of very very similar, water lilies, kids in brown hoods, kids playing in water etc, etc or people will just get discouraged and leave.

How about flowers in water droplets?? I've been seeing a LOT of those lately, too. OH, and colored daisies covered in water droplets. Is it wrong that I vote against the ones I see over and over out of principle?

I am with you on this one Darrell. I said this from day 1 that the cash prizes were going to be a problem. I know I enter my Peruvian Daisies a lot because they are just about the only flower that I photograph that can compete regularly with the water lilies. In some categories there aren't enough entries each week to be an issue, but in Nature, Animals and Landscape the entries are very large, getting larger. I thought once the stock photo business got up and running that the cash prizes were going to go away?

i don't know why Darrell is so piss off with water lilies. as the rule you may submit an unlimited number of images but each one must be significantly different from the others.
What's wrong with that? and one more thing Darrell i thought you have a water lily killer? lol.... Cash prize can't kill the water lilies on the leaderboard.
Water lilies are so appealing to people that's why they are on top people voted them. just submit your water lily Darrell and i won't complain.

and to others here don't let Darrell manipulate you just enjoy make fun and you will learn.

I think, Charlie, the clue is "significantly different" which, you might have noticed, they are not. Even. Remotely. Further, I would have said that - to any reasonable observer - they are, for almost all intents and purposes, almost identical.

I also suspect that your assertion that people vote for them because they are "appealing' is, at best, erroneous. Although I am not quite sure - yet - what mechanism is in play, I am willing to wager that there is one. And that it is not based on the quality of the photography, nor the techniques involved. (Which is, as I understand it, what the images should be - for the most part - judged on and not whether the Players "like' waterlilies or not.)

As for your penultimate assertion, that we are somehow being 'manipulated' by Darrell, I would suggest you go an read some of the plethora of other threads bemoaning the prevalence of these trite and tedious images, and then draw a better, fact-based, conclusion.

If that's your opinion i will respect. the evidence are there on the leaderboard why it's so appealing. and the reason why some are so piss off with water lilies especially Darrell cuz they're on top.
and one thing just cuz of water lilies they will remove the cash prize that's irrelevant.

Let's not forget what is the main focus of the Pixoto ... to sell stock.
If you are graphic designer or editor you might want to see small variations of the same image, same subject .. argument here is that are so similar ... but for them these small differences are huge. Lets say if you have water drop on lilly, why not having 10 images with different position of water drop? Some designers will pick one that suits them the best, right, no?
Sometime ago i came across the article about international salons and competitions that you should guess what most of the artist will do and then you do something different to stand out of that big crowd. But that statement doesn't work for competition on Pixoto because instead of one or two judges who are looking at thousands of images there are ten's of thousands of different people voting here. I personally never had chance to see any of the water lilly images in duels even if there are so many on this website. And if i came across most likely would be more appealing than the other flower.

Even on major stock sites you will not be allowed to upload for instance what you said.. same flower with different waterdrop pattern. You might pass with 2 or 3 but they will start refusing them with reason "you have similar photos in your account". :)

Jasenka, you missing my point. If you search for "frame" on any stock site and you find one that is more/less what you are looking for ... then you ask for "similar images" (from the same artist) because you want to see variations of it. Sometimes difference is really small but thats how it works. If they allow 3 or 10 variations i don't know and that wasn't mine point.

Thanks Nikola, you are right.
Every time i vote i seldom see water lilies, there are more other flowers like roses, daisies and more. even you scroll down the leaderboard. The only thing why some people can't accept is the fact that most of the time they are on top of the leaderboard.

Charlie in my opinion you are a great photogrpher. In my opinion do you want to be known for ONE thing you do well or be a well rounded photogropher? One that has many talents or just one! Weather it is lilies or sheep or trains. Varity is the spice of life! Its good to be different!

I couldnt agree with you more in reguards to rule number two, NO POSTING OF ALIKE OR SAME IMAGES! I looked at one photographers sight and no joke he had 150 images of THE SAME GIRL DARN NEAR THE SAME PHOTO!! WOW I have to think is this the only thing this person know how to photograph or what? The water flowers also. I could go on all day but I wont. I only hope people are making a ton of money from it! Look forward to talking to lots of you!!

Yup. Same, same - this is pretty much why I've given up on this site; I pop in from time to time to be greeted by the same waterdrop flowers, the same badly retouched girl in the inappropriate headdress, 30-odd pictures of a boat on a beach at sunset and, of course, /that/ railway bridge.

Dull, dull, dull.

Hey-ho.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Stop giving cash prizes.

There are SO many cheats out there who are ripping off wallpapers and submitting them as their own works. Why not stop awarding cash prizes? Instead you could offer prints/canvases as prizes. Also, you would limit togs submitting the same flower head posed 27 different ways , roaring tigers, airbrushed women and coloured pencil shavings in different patterns. Let's face it - no-one wants to hang that many of the same picture around their homes ;-)

Having a quality print of a winning image would be a great way for togs to build a portfolio. Having a canvas would give them something to display. Also - it would stop people ripping off images in a desperate bid to win money.

The incentive of money for some means they will do anything to win. Take that incentive away and I'm pretty sure Pixoto will improve tenfold. I'd be absolutely thrilled if I had a print to hang - it's a pretty decent reward :-)
