Can I submit the same image in multiple categories? Can I change the category of an image, if it isn't doing well?

In short, images can only be in one category. The only exception is that if you have a colour image in one of the categories, you can also submit a black-and-white duplicate of the photo but only into the Black and White category.

Yes, you can change your image's category if you are positive it fits more than one theme, but the point total will go back to zero -- in other words, the ImageDuels start fresh. You can do this by either deleting the image and then uploading it again, or click on the Resubmit button (it's below your photo, in amongst several other buttons). I delete my images that don't do well right from the start, usually I give them about 20 duels before I make the decision they're doing poorly, and submit them on a different day. I have found that sometimes this makes a big difference (and sometimes not! LOL).

Please read the two links Bill posted, above -- oodles of good information that will likely explain a lot to you.

Many thanks (to you and to Bill)! I have read both links and they do provide a lot of good info.

If I can bother you (or anyone else who wants to jump in) again with a couple of newbie questions: What to you constitutes doing poorly? A low score? Being paused? For instance: I have an image I posted yesterday, immediately received a Rising Star award, now has a score of 506 and is paused. I have bought additional credits more than once, but it still gets paused. I'm not complaining about the algorithms or anything; just want to play the game as best I can...

Hi Harold, 500 score is considered to be right in the middle.
It all depends how many votes you have on the image. If image has 15 votes and score of 500 it is doing good and will probably be gaining more score, but if it has 80 votes and 500 score it will probably stay at that mark, or around it.
If you are not satisfied with the score you can always resubmit photo, but in that case the photo will lose all score (start from 0) and awards (in your case rising star award). Also bear in mind that resubmitting doesn't guarantee the photo will get bigger score, it could get lower score then it already has.

If you have any more questions please let me know.
