Players' suggestions for improving Pixoto - please add yours

If you have any practical - reality-based - suggestions for improving Pixoto, please contribute to this thread - or - if you think I am the wrong person to start such a thread (since I'm a self-confessed picture-taker and not a photographer) please start a similar one and disregard the rest ;).

To start off, here are some of the ideas already raised on the forum (mostly by others - and I most certainly do not take credit for anyone's suggestions!):

firstly Suggestions for new, stand alone categories:

Macro category (stand alone) with diverse macro sub-categories (please see this thread (http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...) for suggestions regarding possible sub-categories)

Night photography - stand alone category with diverse sub-categories (I confess to absolute ignorance here - would not know where to begin - point and shoot photography has its limits and I have not yet explored night photography satisfactorily)

Alternative light source stand alone category - e.g. infra-red and ultra violet? with diverse sub-categories - I stand in awe and total ignorance!

Flowers as a stand alone category - separated from Nature up close with diverse flower sub-categories - e.g. with insects, with water drops, buds, bought / cut flowers, in habitat (i.e. no studio, no mirrors, etc.), floral landscapes, in studio, floral reflections, etc.

Black and white as a stand alone category - with diverse sub-categories - maybe similar to the existing categories - so B&W landscapes, B&W architecture, etc. But photographers should STILL be allowed to submit B&W photos to other categories (on condition no duplicates) to compete with the full/high colour images if they wish.

Birds as a stand alone category with diverse sub-categories e.g. nesting, flying, waterbirds, silhouettes, raptors, pets/cagebirds, bird interactions, birds with food (with my point and shoot - I am pretty much limited to large birds between goose and ostrich size standing on a rock) so help me out here real avian photographers...)

Portraits of Elderly folks/senior citizens as a sub-category for People (pleeeez - photos of my parents simply can not compete with young, scantily clad beauties!)

Then:

Allowing awards to be sorted by date - not just by highest score - so a "sort by date/score" addition to the awards tab would be necessary;

and, possibly

would it make sense to limit the number of images submitted per sub-category per day - to inhibit those folks who feel that they can submit 20 similar photos a day (every day) to a single sub-category.

Finally (after this I shut up for a while - everyone can breath a big sigh of relief and go and have a cup of coffee)

What about changing the format of this forum to one which is more user-friendly - more like other forums - more here - (http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...)

Apologies for the e-book...

"This was my suggestion - obviously wide open to criticism:

suggest a full macro category with a variety of sub-categories including e.g.:
- insects
- spiders
- birds / eggs / nests / eyes / feathers
- mammals / skin / hair / eyes
- reptiles / skin / scales / eyes
- other animals
- flower detail
- seeds and seed detail
- leaves and leaf detail
- other plants / bark / moss / etc.
- technology
- minerals / sand / stone /
- water and things to do with water
- other - i.e. if you used a macro lens but don't believe it fits in any of the other categories..."

SLOW DOWN THE VOTING! Seriously, is 5 or 10 seconds too long to look at a photo? Actually a pair of photos... Make it impossible to simply click forward at a rapid fire pace. Let's see if we can put some thought into the duels.

I reckon a 5 second delay could work extremely well - however it could also end up being counter-productive. When the site is operating very slowly - I sometimes open up two tabs so that I can vote on one while the other is loading. Since I am definitely no genius, I guess a load of other folks do it too.

Maybe some form of information during loading might help too - a diverse set of messages which state brief infomercial stuff such as -

"remember, this might be your photo - give it some thought before clicking to vote"

OR

"you are voting for the BEST image - not necessarily because you really like lamborghinis/bare-breasted young women/lilac-breasted rollers"

But in principle I think the idea of slowing down the duels in order to ensure a bit of thought is a great idea. It also reminded me that someone (I will try to find the thread) suggested having an option to "go back" on a vote - that moment after one has voted and realise that there was a watermark...

Okie dokie... thanks Keith and Aroon and Sherry! - just been reminded of another suggestion path:

What to do with cheats - fraudulent images - repeat offenders of duplicate submissions - etc.

Ban them? How many warnings are enough? Do both images get removed after a certain number of warnings?

I thought this was an excellent comment and something I would think could be put in place almost immediately...the changing of the wording when posting awards to facebook accounts.

http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...

Pixoto is losing out big time on getting it's name spread throughout fb, simply because the wording makes us "look full of ourselves" as this poster attests to. I know numerous people who are on my fb account and also on Pixoto who won't allow Pixoto to post to their fb account for this very reason.

Change the wording as recommended in this attached post, and let Pixoto spread it's wings through a much greater range on fb.

Exactly, this is no brainer. Just say something like: "Pixoto.com is proud to award (user name) a Best of Day award..." And then of course provide a link to the actual photo or photos in question, not just to the profile page. Please, please do this ASAP!

Yes... I don't like being all braggy for winning an award- AND the few times something was posted to my facebook (before I disabled that feature) my friends would ask me to show them the picture that won the award.

Here are a few at one place-
1.A keyword search on My profile page.
2.Total number of pictures on every category leaderboard.
3.Filter awards.
4.A separate Flower category.
5.Batch edit the images for stock, canvas, tags, delete, resubmit etc. functionality.
6.An email sent to us of who stared following us and sorting them by date asc or desc.
7.An email sent if someone favorites our photo.
8.Suggest keywords/tags.
9.Ability to see who viewed our profile.
10.A new row for challenge awards on the awards page and the profile page.

Links to a selection of various issues – where they have been raised previously...

1) Night photography and more night photography

2) Stock portfolio versus duelling portfolio - thereby allowing photographers to have as many duplicate/similar images as they like – just not for duels.

3) Black and white photo category here and B&W here and more requests for a black and white photo category here - many more requests as you can see... The need for B&W as a stand alone category is evident.

4) Macro category; and more macro; and more macro, and more macro; and more macro; and more macro; and still more macro category requests - as for B&W photography – the need for this is COMPLETELY evident.

5) Senior citizens / elderly people – portrait category

Reports on duplicates, similar, watermarked or any other reportable indiscretion be acted apon quickly, within hours not days or weeks. Apart from that I think Gai and the others have included the other things that I would have said.

Every player receives a weekly "personalized" report I presume?

Please consider including brief - but highly visible - notes about the problems/challenges with players submitting duplicates, recrops, similar images, watermarks on photos, etc. with each weekly report. These affect everyone - and add significantly to the Pixoto team's work - as well as alienate honest players. Getting everyone to work together can greatly reduce the high volume "reactionary" response needed to deal with all the reports.

Consider compiling a short questionnaire, which EVERY player has to complete (with 100%) before they can continue voting / submitting. The questions could be something such as:

1) Duplicate images are NOT allowed - YES they are allowed / NO they are NOT allowed
2) Photos with writing or watermarks or other identifiable additions are NOT allowed - YES they are allowed /NO they are not allowed
3) Have you read the competition rules - YES I have read the rules /NO I have not read the rules
4) Do you know that a recrop of an image is also considered to be a duplicate? YES I know that recrops of an image are not allowed unless the original image has been deleted /NO I think that a recrop is not a duplicate image

For those players who "get" the issue - this will take roughly 60 seconds to complete, those who don't "get" the issue might just be reminded...

Agree with gaiafrique.

Also please give some examples of duplicate images in http://blog.pixoto.com/no-very-simila...
(this link is found at "Contest Rules" page)

Please make the examples very clear so that all players can see what Pixoto mean by duplicates, e.g.:
- same image
- 1 B&W, 1 color
- 1 full-size, 1 cropped
- same subject, slightly different angle (for building/object)
- same subject and same pose (for person/animal)
- 1 zoom-in, 1 zoom-out (different focal length but same object)
- 1 normal image, 1 enhanced/photoshopped image
- some others ...

HI Terry, the guidelines are pretty clear "Obviously miscategorized images will be recategorized if reported. Recategorization into a new category results in the loss of all ImageDuel data" I am not sure how that can be misconstrued. Sometimes it is hard to decide where to put an image though, often they fit into multiple categories.

All "real" players invest in this site. That investment might include purchase of a PRO account or simply be the many hours/days that are needed to vote in duels, submit images, provide stock photos, etc., etc.

If Pixoto desires to showcase a working business model, with a level of competitive professionalism, they need to deal urgently and professionally with basic, critical issues, including (but not limited to):

- enforcing policy and rules;
- dealing with offenders - especially repeat offenders;
- addressing discrepancies (and other problems) with leaderboards; and,

etc., etc, etc.

If Pixoto wishes to have players' confidence that they (as a business enterprise) can manage the sale of stock images - then they need to earn that confidence afresh.

Will - The critical comment here IMO is as follows:
"Some of the very best sites of this type do not offer cash prizes but do have significant numbers of paying members because the sites are well run and policed. In these cases the membership fees are perceived as funding a quality experience. "

Michelle on a similar topic... with a few added dimensions, including:
"I feel also that many people here are members only for the awards or for the cash prizes. They don't want to improve, they don't want to learn. Fortunately they still are very good photographers with nice pictures (and different ones). But they soon will disappear under a mountain of duplicates and crops. I feel sorry for pixoto, it was so good at the beginning"

Janna's suggestion

"allow members to FLAG 100% duplicate photos ... which removes them until they can be checked by the moderator.

Allow award winning members or top percentage rank members to re-categorize images- where it leaves our name as the mover - viewable only on your computer- so we wont be able to move stuff wrongfully without ramifications. Perhaps ban us from moving photos in categories we have an image currently submitted in.

You guys need help- and there are plenty of us already trying to help you- we are free- let us help! (or Maybe I'm the only one who wants to help- I don't know)

Allow those of us you know well from in these forums to sign up to be volenteer assistant moderators. At least we will get to see results and be less frustrated.
"

This idea has been suggested previously - in various forms...
e.g.
http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...
http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...
http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...
http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...
http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...
http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...

with a post from Trey warning that it might lead to favouritism (presumably if misapplied?) - http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to... - wonder whether you still feel this way Trey?

Until the Pixoto team's action/response time to reporting and problems is up to speed (through increased staffing with appropriate training) this is probably the only real option.

I would NEVER accept the idea that other players could flag or re-categorize or move my photos. Report them if there is a problem? Sure, that's fine. But the idea that other players could somehow have power over me would be unacceptable, and I would leave the site immediately!

That's interesting Keith - personally it would not bother me in the least, on condition that the "reporters" / "moderators" were held accountable by Pixoto.

On the contrary, I would far rather err on the side of caution, and end up resubmitting - or having to motivate for re-enstatement, than have the status quo, where a whole bunch of duplicates, recrops, fake submissions and other issues are ruining my experience of what could be a really fun site - fakes, duplicates that are in fact removing many player's valid awards and reducing the validity of image scores all around.

That said, your opinion is every bit as valuable as anyone's so thank you very much for putting your voice into the mix - good to have and to know. Have a great day.
PS - it is HIGHLY unlikely that Pixoto would go this route anyhow, since the idea has been mooted for over a year, with zip done to date - so you may comfortably untie your knickers ;)

Now on the other hand, *moderators*, appointed by Pixoto on the basis of proven knowledge, ability, honesty and so forth... now that would be brilliant.

Hi,

I'd Like to see a Stand alone HDR catagory and i would very much like a zoom/full page/full screen preview option while voting.

sometimes some images look ok in the preview window, but if you look at them in full screen later. there are all sorts of problem's

Reinforcing topics already mentioned:
I really like the idea of more categories, especially some already mentioned.
If you look at people- photos of women dominate over other sub categories.
Perhaps break the overall PEOPLE category into more than one:
Women, Men, Elderly, Family
People always has hundreds of entries, compared to say, babies & children which seems to have 80-100 submissions per day.
Photos of flowers dominate in Nature up close... so either start a Flower category specifically OR at least have a true NATURE category vs STUDIO category.
Landscape is a HUGE category, and there are lots of HDR entries, and night entries, which could both be stand alone categories.

Seeing the total # of images at the top of the page would be WONDERFUL.
I might know my image is #36 for the week so far- but is that top 10%, top 5%? I won't know til I scroll down and see that there are 200 images or 2000 images.

Timely enforcement of rules such as duplication would help alot. It's frustrating to come just one place out of top 10 because of a duplicate, then have that image pulled. I have seen improvement in this area for sure, just in the last couple of weeks. The idea of moderators might help... I'm sure there are good photogs from around the world that could have a specific ability to flag an image for immediate review or something?

Something not yet mentioned:
I REALLY think more thought needs to go into the delete/resubmit/similar image rule. There are photogs who wait til near award time, if their images don't do well, and pull them. If they've submitted 10 images in a small category, that could mean the difference between your image getting an award or not (making the top 20% a smaller margin) Then, the next day they repeat the same thing. Seeing the same images day after day after day gets kind of boring. Most people resubmit responsibly. Some misuse it.
