Pixoto Photo Challenges FAQ:

  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
Why are Pixoto Challenges better than other methods of managing a photo contest?
• Creating a challenge takes only a few minutes – just fill out the form
• People can upload their photos directly to the challenge page
• Challenges are promoted to over 100,000 photographers
• Real people from all over the globe choose the best images in unbiased, blind voting, called ImageDuelTM
• The contest owner can still choose the “Judge’s Award” but they don’t have to page through thousands of photos to find the best ones. ImageDuel puts the best on the top.
• Facebook auto-sharing: every entry and every award gets shared by default
• Brands and publishers can license submitted images using Pixoto Stock or by adding additional license rights to the challenge.

What are the costs to create a challenge?
Creating a challenge is free! That said you do have the option of paying for a “promoted” challenge. Promoted challenges are listed on the Pixoto logged-in home page and are also promoted in at least one of our twice weekly challenge emails that go to over 85,000 members. In addition if you want to offer prizes for your contest you must choose a promoted challenge. The cost is $50 plus 50% of the value of any prizes offered.

Does it cost anything to enter a Pixoto Challenge?
No – it is free to enter all Challenges but you must spend 10 credits (or more) per image submitted and the images must be submitted to a Pixoto category as well (another 10 credits if is not already on the site). You earn 1 credit for every vote you make using ImageDuel.

How do I know if I entered my image in the challenge?
Go to the challenge home page, click the blue “My Pixoto Images” button. If your image has a green check when you hover over it – then it has been submitted. If not you can click the image to submit it.

Who decides the winner in a challenge?
The challenge creator can decide on the Judge’s Award or they can let the voters determine who gets it. All other awards are determined by the results of ImageDuel.

How to I vote on a Challenge?
Challenge duels come up periodically in ImageDuel. You can’t decide which challenge you vote on or vote on a particular image.

Is there a way that we can remove an entry made to the challenge, I mean the contributor, not the moderator?

how do I vote for the winner of my contest

Hello David, you can select winner of your contest only in voting stage, and only if you selected (while making contest) that you will be choosing Judge's award. If you chose that Pixoto voters will select Judge's award, then image with most contest score will get Judge's award (in this case you can't select it).
If you are asking where you can vote for images in your contest - duels for your contest will randomly appear amongst other duels when voting for your contest start.

I hope this helps.

A question about Challenges - Sometime ago I entered a waterfall photo-
http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

a few days back I entered this image in a photo challenge (http://www.pixoto.com/challenges/wate...) and was awarded top 20% . I resubmited it today. Now I don't see the challenge award on the image description page.

Do the Challenge awards too go away if we resubmit the image, like all other awards? In my opinion the challenge awards should remain even if we resubmit as they are different from all the other awards.

I want to disqualify a bunch of very similar images (a cat drinking from a tap - posted by the same person) but i did what it said, i hovered over the image but it doesnt seem to work using an ipad. I dont have wifi or internet access for a computer at home so cant use that. What can I do?

i created a challenge for graffiti/street art, a member asked if they could submit photos of people with graffiti, i replied yes as long as %50 of the subject matter is graffiti to be fair on votes
now this member has submitted 32 photos to the challenge all of people standing in front of a graffiti wall
is there a limit to how many a person can submit per challenge and how do i choose and is it fair for me to disqualify ALOt his photos or can i contact him in some way and ask him to choose say 5 or less for the contest? and disqualify the rest, because he is stacking the odds in his favor with so many entries and the theme of the challenge is the graffiti not people

Heather I think you have to ask yourself do the pics fulfill what you have set out as the theme for your challenge.

If they do they stay and if they don't you can dq them. Did you limit the number of entries per player?

I haven't entered your challenge but I have entered many others and if they don't limit the number of entries I would be p****d off if the pics where dq'd because i entered 5 or 10 or 200 and I had wasted my credits.

i agree i would be angry too about the credits, but i think its like cheating to submit that many entries, and i was not aware we had an option of limiting the number of entries this is my first challenge creation
and do they fulfill the theme? i believe this majority do not they r about the model not the graffiti

There is an "Additional Rules" part where you can stipulate other conditions you want.. Like 5 pics per player or pics taken in 2014 or whatever you want. I had one pic dq'd in one competition and I was left a message "only 1 pic allowed" but there was nothing in the additional rules. Not much I could do about it and it was only 1 dq and 25 credits. I would have been upset if I had entered 35 and had 30 of them dq on the basis of the number of entries if it wasn't in the conditions.

it doesn't seem like cheating to you stacking the odds in your favor? for example there is a contest for nature if i took 50 pictures of trees and submitted them is that fair? i do understand they spent the credits, i guess i assumed there was an entry limit set by pixoto or never imagined one person would submit that many photos and they are all similar and not really about the theme

Well what should happen is that the best pic wins. If you submit the best pic and I submit 50. Your pic being the best pic should win. Me submitting 50 will do me no good unless they are good. The whole idea is to find the best pic.

If is said get 100 of your friends and we are going to put them against the Olympic sprint champion, the shear number of competition will not mean they have any more chance of winning unless they are faster. (Sorry, I like analogies).

If you feel the entries do not fit the theme, DQ them.

Having looked at the Graffiti Challenge I assume you are talking about the pics from Charles Lugtu. The pics he has submitted are pics of women, the graffiti is merely the background. It's up to you but I would DQ them for being off theme.

Until recently, I participated frequently in a lot of challenges on Flickr. The ones I preferred all had entry limits: most of them had a limit of one entry only, and some had a limit of 3 entries only. It really makes it much fairer and also forces you to really consider which images you want to submit. I am completely in favour of ALL Pixoto challenges, community and pixoto-sponsored, having a limit.

Hi, I have entered a photo into a challenge, and it is currently voting. I can't see anything on my photo, when I click inside the challenge on my photo, it comes up with my "ordinary" Image Score, and nothing shows with mouse over. Where would I find my image score for photos in challenges? A challenge long closed where I entered photos, showed nothing either?

I just got my contest concluded.. But looking at the no. of duels of the images I can see that number is varying much.. If one image underwent 11 duels another went 40 duels... Needless to say that the images that got more duels is topping the chart.. Or is it the other way round? Those who have climbed up the ladder gets more duels?? Its bit confusing and I feel its unfair... And if you add on the number duels of all the images it is much much more than the votes allocated !! Why this is so??

Hi Jasenka the link is http://www.pixoto.com/challenges/spir... ... I thought, in a contest every image should have a fair deal.. Let things evolve on its own.. Don't you think its better than the present mode?

Hi Anoop, thank you for link. Actually there are only 3 more votes that have been cast over allocated votes. If you check your challenge page you can see Allocated votes (in your case 2616) and Votes cast (in your case 2619).

Algorithm is same in challenges as it is in category voting, meaning higher ranked images will get more votes. We think it is more relevant to determine if image will be #1 or #2 (or #2 and #3) then to determine if image will be #207 or #208?

I hope this helps.

hmm... u r right ! It is critical only till top 20% right.. But how do u rank these images in the first place? Are they all equal duels initially and then move on to Algorithm ? If thats the case will luck play a part here? If an image luckily gets weaker opponents initially it reaches the upper realm to play algorithm.. If they fare badly there will they be demoted? And vice versa?

Can anybody launch a challenge specifying some rules and then choose not to moderate at all ? Pls refer to the link http://www.pixoto.com/challenges/viol... ... Its really hilarious !! People would carefully choose the images and try to conform to the stipulations, but somebody pour in with non-conforming entries and never gets disqualified.. So the sincere participants get stranded loosing the credit points they earned the hard way !! Can't Pixoto do something to stop such farce happening using your platform??

Why the images have shrunk beyond a reasonable size ? Even the scores are not visible.. Initially it was 4 images in a line and later it was 6 making it more difficult,, But now the whole screen has shrunk making it almost impossible to decipher anything written.. Now its like this for more than 24 hrs. ... What could be done ??

When I was moderating earlier my rating was 76 and finally 81.. And now for the new contest No.1 to No.10 its N/A !! Why so? Whats the criteria for rating? Did I have to do something wrong to loose my rating? I thought I did a reasonably good job of it as far as the the number of entries is concerned in spite of being specific topics and 20 credit points per entry.. I had personally visited the related category and had sent them individual messages informing on the contest... Also I was within my rules always for disqualifying an image but I always had took the participants into confidence before doing it.. I made lot of friends on the way .. I enjoyed it well but I'm not too sure whether Pixoto had the same pleasure !! :-)

Dear all,

I like challenges but I need to share my opinion on them and give some suggestions, maybe some of participants will like my ideas. maybe all of this was already suggested - in this case, sorry for repeating:

1st limit the time from the date of creating challenges till the final date of submitting photos. for example, the deadline for submiting photos set to max 7 days. (I see that there are challenges that have even more then 3 months to submit photos, it is too long in my opinion!)

2nd limit the time of voting, for example, to max 7 days (have seen that the time of voting for some challenges were even 2 months, why normal duels are slowed even more because duels for the some challenges last so long)

3rd moderator or the person who creates the challenge should not take any part in that challenge, and especially not get one of the first 10 places

4th form some team of pixoto controllers to control challenges before opening them. in case if similar or nearly identical challenges are already running, not allow new challenges with identical or similar topic. (eg. there were a few challenges with the same theme in the same time - for example few challenges for the best animals, few for the best landscape or similar). if there is already running challenge , new one with the same theme could start after previous one finishes!

5th these pixoto controllers should advice challenge creators of the topic of the challenge, because challenges should be more specific eg. not animal in global, because normal duels are already set to animals, then specific animals.. frogs, snakes , lions or.... not allow challenge for black&white photos - limit these challenges to black & white cars, or flowers etc.... (I can see that there are challenges for a specific themes which I like more, but also there are challenges for categories like pixoto categories.... I dont see why duplicate them! and I think that challenge creators should be more creative in this!
also, these pixoto controllers should not allow challenges that are not clear enough or could be variously interprated - to help participant and avoid disqualification from the challenge later! If topic of the challenge is something global or unclear enough, it should have some good description.

6th credits to participate in challenges - should be the same for all challenges (I didnt make any challenge so I dont know the propositions - who is setting up these credits, moderator or automaticaly), but if credits for participation in challenge is lower (10 points eg) more of us will participate and prize will be bigger!

7th maybe, all 10 first places in challenges should be rewarded with some credits;
first place credits as many as participant or even more, then 1/2, then 1/3, then 1/4 then other until 10th place which is 1/10!

8th lot of challenges are "photos more then 600 points, 700 or 10% or 1st place etc etc" and participating in these challenges is quite difficult because when I am submitting photo i cant see points and awards. pixoto should make possible to sort photos by points or by awards or put that details on the photo that we would like to submit to some challenge!

it is a really big post! sorry!
thanks for reading! best regards!

Excellent suggestions.. And you are absolutely right in suggesting that a moderator for moderating the contest themes is a must...

Also moderator who will not bother to moderate should be disqualified.. There would be a set of rules and there will be many entries that are non-conforming.. Then the participant is confused..Whether to put in or not.. He will choose not to save credit points..And finally the non-conforming ones would contest freely and would end up in the top positions at the cost of the genuine ones !! Even we urge the moderator to do something in the comments section he will not even seem to hear anything !!

Now I'm moderating a contest No.1 to No.10.. So naturally I have open every entry to see whether it is permissible.. The issue here is that if you click on the image it would display only six award and the rest are not even indicated.. Unaware of this I dq'd couple of entries as they seem not to be conforming. But the participant complained and I went to his page and checked and found the claim to be genuine! Now consider my plight ! I have to go to the participant's pages each time and verify!! Also from there if you press back button it will never reach you to the contest page !!! So I have go to the challenges home page and get on to the concerned contest each time !!!! Now I repent deeply for the idea I had put forth !! :-)

1st When creating a challenge, moderator has choice on how many days the contest runs. The longer days given, photographers have greater chance to participate if they do not already have the photo to enter. Also, people are busy and given a bit more time permits for greater participation.

2nd The challenge system is set on the dates for voting. To my knowledge, if you saw one with a two month voting period, it may have been a glitch in the system or someone from pixoto may need to address this. To my knowledge, the dates are automated and awards are given within 5 days of final vote. Number of days to vote, again assigned automatically. (to best of my knowledge)

3rd In my opinion, if the judging is being done by the Pixoto members, it then is fair.... my hope then is not for quick guessing or selecting yet that at least basic rules of photography be applied. Different levels of photographers are on site and is a consideration also. Next, if the judge to select the winning photo is the person creating the challenge, then my opinion is that the moderator becomes the judge for the win and should not enter their photos if this is the case. AGain, the person creating the challenge selects if they will judge the winner or if Pixoto voters will do the judging.

4th My guess is that this suggestion or similar to this has been requested. You are able to search for this going to the community question answer section. Subjects are saved for future questions. if it is not found, there is a selection button for you to make the suggestion! :-)

5th PIXoto employees do not moderate the community challenges. The suggestion that I was given when I asked was to select from community challenges where the moderator has a decent rating score. Not sure, I think the rating can go max to 100.

6th I do not know the answer to this fully. I do know, again, the moderator creating the challenge sets how many points each entry must give. Perhaps if higher number it is thought that a photographer will determine only their best to enter keeping the number down but point vs. # per vote will balance out. Again, I do not know the reason why differences of points are selected. The system has it set automatically for 15. Challenge creator can change it from 10 - 25.

7th Sounds good to me! However, I suggest that you go to the community section and make this suggestion for Pixoto employees to decide. I do not have authority.

8th Again, I suggest that you use the community suggestion section to write this.

I am a photographer and am ever learning... I have been active on Pixoto for a short time compared to many on site. I have started making challenges which I enjoy and do my best to be fair to all. Anytime you have a question of some sort or comment pertaining to a challenge, click on the Comment tab of at the challenge page. That is space where you will get answers pertaining to the specific challenge. ALSO, this is the first that a message came my way for answering. i gave you answers to the best of my knowledge. somE, I did not know full answers for you yet I gave you my suggestion(S) to obtain those answers. HAVE fun and I hope you enjoy yourself. YOU are welcome to start your own challenge(s) which may answer something I may have missed. BEST wishes and blessings.. Cheryl

Hi,

I entered a picture I had uploaded to a photo challenge and thereafter it has vanished from My Images, both in the recent and uploaded tabs. The count of the images to the right of my profile page shows the exact number of images I uploaded, but below it, one image is missing; the image which I entered for a photo contest.

Does Pixoto remove images from the user's profile when they have been entered in a challenge?

Thanks.

How do you select one of my pixoto images for a challenge? When I hover my mouse over an image I receive a pop up saying "enter challenge." I click on it then I get an error message saying "no images selected." So how does one select it? There is no place to place a check mark. So whats up?

How can I find my challenge?
