Pixoto reminds me of "The hen with golden eggs"

Couple of months back, I had made a resolve that I would not be offering any comments on this forum. Why would I make such a resolve? Because, it is absurd to bang my head against a wall. That is how I see the management of this site.

Then, why am I breaking the resolve? Because, it really pains me to see such a nice framework go waste. Atleast, that is what I sense at this juncture.

Why remember the story? Because, IMHP, pixoto is doing exactly against what the story preached.

I see many members raising genuine concerns on variety of topics, but seldom do I see any worthwhile response from pixoto. The responses are mostly limited to piecemeal measures, which possibly curb the concerns temporarily without pixoto making any changes that are suggested by the members.

I do not know how others feel, but this is how I have changed. I stopped voting. I started opening contests. Does it alarm anyone? God knows. But what if such members are increasing? To drive home the gravity of situation, let me try and show the other extreme. All members stop voting. There is a problem. All members also start opening contests. The problem is bigger. Much bigger than pixoto may fathom. Consequences? Piles of voting required, with no one voting. Will pixoto work in such a situation? Definitely not.

What is happening now is probably the initial stages of this event.

Why did I stop voting? Because I did not have time to waste on insensitive people. On someone, who would not value my time.
Why did I start opening contests? Because it will give me easy credits.

Come on Pixoto. Make some sense out of a beautiful setup you have created. Respect and value the time of the members. Institute methods on the site, which make things easy for us and prevents wastage of time on trivial or non essential issues. Take some responsibility for the contents you get on your site.

Time is running. Many others may also be running along. God bless.

What a nice honest post Dinesh. Not only has the low and diluted voting affected the daily/weekly contests (which is the basis of Pixoto) this is also impacting submission rates.

Todays People category will barely reach 200 images, i remember when there was 400-500 images per day, every day.

Maybe the following stats all mean nothing, but I find it interesting nonetheless to compare this week to the same week last year in some of the very popular categories (yes, I know the week isn't done yet, but it will be in about two hours):

People:
Week 31, 2014....photos with a score of 600 and higher: 281
Week 31, 2015....photos with a score of 600 and higher: 119

Animals:
same week, same scoring (600+):
2014: 450
2015: 314

Landscapes:
same week, same scoring (600+):
2014: 527
2015: 262

So in just those three categories, there were 1,258 photos that scored 600 or better in week 31, 2014. And this week -- week 31 for 2015 -- there are just 695 photos in those three categories that currently sit at 600 or better.

Like I said, maybe it means nothing. I just found it of interest. My internet connection is being buggy so I couldn't scroll to the bottom of each to see how many total photos were submitted; I get to a certain point scrolling down and then it all just freezes up on me.

Just from the Leaderboard, Dinesh. Go to "This week" and change the last digit of the URL from a 5 to a 4 (in other words, change 2015 to 2014).

Dinesh, that was a lot of work you did there! :-)

Here are the totals:

Photos for this week in 2014 scoring 600+: 3342
Photos for this week in 2015 scoring 600+: 1776 (so far, the week is not technically over and images could still be recategorized, or rise or fall in score)

I have also slowed down dramatically with my voting, but for a different reason. I don't enter enough Photos to need an over abundance of credits AND with the contests being such a mess I cannot find something worth entering (or at least not enough to need tons of credits).

I have looked at several weekly totals between May-June and made comparisons between 2014 and 2015. Image submissions down in nearly all categories some by up to 30% from corresponding periods in 2014. These numbers are based upon several weekly totals which have been averaged to give daily totals.

People category May-July 2014 daily submission average 375 per day. May-July 2015 daily submission average 250 per day. down 30% on corresponding periods 2014.

Landscape category May-July 2014 daily submission average 530. May-July 2015 daily submission average 457 per day. . down 15% on corresponding periods 2014.

Buildings category May-July 2014 daily submission average 230. May-July 2015 daily submission average 188 per day. down 18% on corresponding periods 2014.

Yesterdays 1st August totals.

People category 209
Landscapes 430 (about 20 will be removed/recategorized)
Buildings 169

It is easy to see that image submission numbers are in decline, so it does not take a leap of faith to deduce that participation rates (duels) may be reduced. This along with the other factors (introduction of uncategorized, b&w, uncontrolled contests) may be having an effect on duel numbers and point scoring. According to Pixoto the low duel numbers are down to old images dueling, which is impacting the daily duels. This may be the part of the effect, however i hope Pixoto looks into the bigger picture of why people are not participating.

I still think the product "Pixoto" is the best customer engaged image site out there, however in recent months it has lost its way.

Great effort Jack. I totally agree with your penultimate statement, however, I have a different view on the rest.

The world, though small, is still a fairly large arena for making a competitive, fun filled, commercially viable, diverse system...successful. Having said that, I also feel that achieving it is not a child's play. But, at the same time, it is not impossible.

But, I am also sure that if such a venture is associated with exploitation, insensitivity, lack of flexibility, lack of responsiveness, complicated time-consuming processes, waste of time due to intentional acts of management .....blah blah blah, the impossibility is what such a venture is staring at.

All of us, as photographers, would love to go out, click photographs, submit for the consideration of community, get the outcome, be happy about it, contribute our bit for broader community.....and repeat the process.

But, would we want to waste time on reporting innumerable images, one by one, without knowing if the images were already reported and without knowing what happened to the report, then go through three pages to delete each image that we want to delete.....etc etc etc. There is a huge list that seems to plague pixoto, which is possibly growing at an unacceptable rate due to lack of credible response from pixoto.

Do we have time for such wasteful activities? I personally do not have. I am not a professional photographer. I am just trying to develop this hobby. I would also place it on record that due to this site, I made efforts to learn the intricacies of this art and I am very thankful to this site and even more to the members, who showed some amazing images to me and instigated my competitiveness.

I may have voted in tens of thousands (if not in millions) in the initial days, when I started. And I would have continued. But what killed me was a response at http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...

What it implied was that pixoto was not bothered about my time, it did not bother about my convenience to move through the processes, it had very little value for my time.

Pixoto needs to address the insensitivities in the system, the voting will pick up. But if it continues to beat around the bush, feeling that its consumers are naive enough to not understand what is going on in their heads, pixoto will dig its own grave.......and that is a painful sight......All IMHO.....for whatever value it has for pixoto......

Probably the last from me on the issue....because there are many already on this forum on similar lines.......no use wasting more time on this.

After all.....it is property of pixoto. If the burial is acceptable to pixoto, I will keep the roses ready to offer my condolences and decorate the coffin. But that is not....what I want to happen. But then again, who cares? Is anyone there?

I had all of my photos deleted from here about a month ago and my account was to be closed, but they seem to have left me with a limited account. All my photos are gone and I can't post photos, but still have access in here, so I stop by once and awhile to read the forum. WOW!!!!! my reasons for leaving are still thriving here at Pixoto I see....I was a very active member and I would love to come back,,
if things were to change....
BUT....
This is a very informative thread, a lot of members have done some excellent fact collection here. This thread has been alive for over 14 hours according to my computer,, and Pixoto's RESPONSE IS........(( insert cricket chirps here ))
The horse is dead everyone,,, put down the whip!!!!!!
As for me,, I will stand off to the side here with my limited account,, keep checking in with my hopes for positive change...
PIXOTO MANAGEMENT:: TAKE HEED,,,,, The handle has been pushed and the water is starting to swirl......
