I just submitted two photos, both macro shots of a single fly. I just checked what they are winning/losing against, and the photos have been placed against photos of an orangutan, a black bear, and a bird. How are these in the same category as my photos, which are in the SPIDERS AND INSECTS category ?

spiders and insects are not a category, it's a sub-category under ANIMALS. All images duels within a category.

I have always disagreed with that, it's one of the things I hate on here, I think it should be just be photos against ones in the same sub category as some will almost always beat others. I spider stands very little chance against a kitten etc.

Thats interesting considering a spider is in 1st place at the moment in animals for yesterday, beating all types of cats birds insects and other types of animals ?
