Overrepresented Subjects

Hi All - we've been listening to your feedback and are trying to make Pixoto a more fun and interesting place for photographers and image buyers alike. One issue that we're trying to address is that some subjects are over represented on Pixoto. While these photos may be great in their own right - it can become tiring to see so many versions of essentially the same thing. We are planning on banning some over-represented subject based on member feedback.

What subjects would you like to see temporarily (6-12 months) banned from Pixoto?

I really feel bad and sorry for those photos which didn't make it to the top. As what Edson said a bunch of us here in Hatyai, Thailand are just doing it for fun. Why are you so interested with our profiles? Anyway, lilies, the mosque, the bridge, and etc...are what we have here, we are very lucky to have them. So, we tried to do our best to make them look even more beautiful. I've suggested a solution before and they said they will put it into consideration. I'll bring it here once again. My suggestion to this problem is simple actually. To insure fare voting. Ex. If I submit a photo in the FLOWER category. In my image duels within that day/24hrs, I shouldn't be given any image duels from that category (FLOWER). And this applies to other categories as well. Because what happens is that, people vote for the other photo becuase they already know the photographer. And secondly, they want to vote you down becuase their photo is just next to the lilies. Then maybe limit the submission of lilies to say 3 in a day. What do you think?
Let's just make sulotions and meet at the middle...

our pix are not the best compared to other "great togs" but we all share the same feelings when our pix go on top...FYI Asher Salvan and Juliser Salvan ( cousin) are non DSLR users but when they win they share their joy to everybody every time we meet on Saturday.... and we would just laugh out loud every time other togs would look down at our achievements....

Let's just have some fun and enjoy while it last....CHEERS!

However i too like to ban or some how limit over represented subjects..but i can not entirely go against it...As people are limited to geographical locations..not everyone can go everywhere and get variety of photos..people like to click what ever they have easy access to..as all here are not professional photographer, some are business persons or service persons, who has photography as hobby..so whenever or whatever they can photograph, they do.
but that should be limited too..same subject can have variety in many ways..i feel..

Thank you Amol for considering our geographical location. We are teachers here, and photography is one thing that we do together on the weekends, that's why you can see similarities on our images. We can't go else where far from our place because we need to go to school on school days. Banning it, is not creative idea. Limiting the submission I think is better than banning them.

All my photographs are taken within a 5 mile walk of my house - many of them are within 1/4 mile radius of my neighbourhood. You do not have to travel to take good pictures. If you have a natural eye for composition, you can make any subject appealing. What's to stop any of you going to the local market place and taking pictures ethnics foods and cultural sites, or municipal buildings and parks?

yes there are so many subjects around and I've collected literally thousands of them since I started photography in 2008 but the chances being in the top 20% is quite remote....the group then discovered the lilies...and as they say we became infamous in this site....

Yap, I did try submitting photos of different subjects as well, other flowers but yeah, the chances of getting to the top is quite remote really. So, I decided to use lilies and make them look better.

To be honest, the first time I joined pixoto I had a hard time getting awards. So I was challenged to be better. I decided to study and spend more time how to edit photos and now I had develop my own way of editing. As what kuya Edson said me and my cousin are using a point and shoot camera. We are limited to what we can do. My camera is good in macro so I focused on it. I tried taking some landscapes but it's just not capable of doing it. I want to have fun with my camera and pixoto makes me happy because my images are recognized though I'm not a dslr user yet. Thank you pixoto.

The least important tool a good photographer has is the camera. As the saying goes, it's a poor workman that blames his tools.

One of my top scoring images, 700+, was taken with my iPhone. Just sayin'....

You don't have to be a dslr user to take good photos - I have received awards with a point-and-shoot. In fact I still do not own a dslr. Ok - so I may not get the top award, but there are many togs who use a point-and-shoot professionally . Do not underestimate the camera you own - with trial and error you will find out more what it can do. No-one is saying you should take landscapes - yes, the macro is good on a finepix - I have looked at your page and you have some excellent shots - however of 102 images, 47 are the lily/lotus flower. Try playing with more settings, try focusing on different subjects - I'm sure you have more on your doorstep that what your portfolio represents ........

I regularly use my Kodak Easy Share for macro shots. Since I am poor and can't afford the lenses I need/want to get great macros on my Canon, I quite regularly revert to the camera that works the best for that job. OTOH, I can barely work the camera on my damn iphone...

I have gotten awards from my Kodak point and shoot! and from my DSLR's--it is, after all, the image that is considered NOT the kind of camera. And the brain behind the image is the most important! but all serious in photography really do know that!

To Edson Reyes et al:

Don't take it too personal when I said "lilies" and "train rail from THAILAND". First of all I have only 1 vote to cast and maybe my opinion may not be the opinion of others just like you. However, lilies are an obvious over representation as you can see in the leader board from top to bottom where you can hardly see the difference from one image to another. I'm not against lily because it's winning, it's because too much of it has been uploaded time and time again with almost no difference from one photographer to another especially from your "group".

Another over represented are roses. I have 16 in my profile, it's not because I like it but that's the best way I could get even with those lilies. If roses will be banned, then I will gladly welcome it.

With regards to "made in Thailand train rail", Isn't it obvious that it has been uploaded by your "group" time and time again (check the latest submissions) with almost no difference but the clouds and the sun? Hello? Can't you not take a walk a bit farther along the track and find another angle shot or spot? Same spot? Same composition? Same Angle? A lot of train tracks in Thailand, take shots to your heart's content, then upload a fresh "made in Thailand" track then I'm sure nobody can say it's same old sickening images.

By the way, Jinine Chen aka Vivero -- your friends are not forgotten. I just hope it's not Salvan and Salvan Jr., because most of their uploads are the same from previous two togs. You might wan't to warn them again same as you warned Jinine when she was busted and banned. Watch out Bill Goodman is watching you LOL.

I guess you've read the way you've understood it and not the way I said it. I didn't single out the lilies from Thailand but rather the train rail from Thailand. That's exactly why I used coma ( , ) when I said: "The lilies, and the train rail from Thailand". It's way different from saying: The lilies and the train rail from Thailand". Get it?

Oh yeah! I forgot the main topic here. Hello Garces!!! Single out the lilies in Thailand and the bridges, real fair huh! Then what about the lilies from indonesia, Malaysia and from other countries? Now, my account don't even think about it for a second that Juliser's account is also mine...Uh uh...no can do Mr. Garces. We are cousins and we have different cameras. See he's just new. Why do I feel like we are a threat to some togs. When we were in nature upclose we were always the topic. Solution? = to make a separate flower category. Now we have a separate flower category but still we are being expostulated not to submit our beautiful flowers. Do we need to have a separate category just for lilies? Hmmm...I bet Thailand people will still be in the topic....just unbelievable! I just wanna have fun, which I am doing everyday anyway!

People know full well that prize money is relates to numbers of images entered in that category.- if you have a group of togs submitting - and resubmitting in excess 50 images each in one category per week, as a group that means they push up the money they get rewarded.
If that's not abusing the system, I don't know what is.....

Let's try it, if it is really the weekly prize money is the matter about the flooding of certain categories. Let us see if the flooding of certain categories will really stop. Nothing to loose! These recent comments are very informative. For example:

"yes there are so many subjects around and I've collected literally thousands of them since I started photography in 2008 but the chances being in the top 20% is quite remote....the group then discovered the lilies..."

So you admit that you're not interested in submitting photos if they don't go to the very top? That's not a love of photography, that's not wanting to be here to have fun, that's only loving a "win".

Edson....please understand this. In no way are you or your images "Infamous" . All you have done is work the system. We both know that the "Bridge" & "Lily" images arent excellent photos.....but they do well here on Pixoto. You keep saying that all your doing is having fun.....but how much fun can it seriously be taking numerous photos of the same thing.? ....Personally i think you couldnt care less about "Taking the photo"....All that seems to matter to you is watching your image rise above 650 or so points.

Posting the same thing over & over again is desperate & shows little artistic flair.

Im the Head Chef of a restaurant in Edinburgh, Scotland. Now.....lets just say i have one dish.....and that dish sells really well. Would this mean that i should put nothing else on the menu?. ...just go with that same dish...over and over again. Maybe i could add a little sweet smoked paprika, or a little fennel seed. Change the flavour by just a little bit. Maybe change the colour slightly. So say.....i could have 20 variations of the exact same dish?. Do you think thats right?. Or do you think maybe i should have 20 different dishes....to show my artistic flair & give customers a wide range?

We all know the answer.

Remember Edson....you share & compete with other members on this site, dont abuse the site & take advantage of it.

Photography & Art is a beautiful thing. I think its fantastic that you, your family & friends get out together on little trips.....you live in a fantastic piece of the world.

Show everyone here what your country & you have to offer, Dont just play the game....Enjoy photography........not just the competative side of it. It will get you knowhere.

Echo, what amazes me is how Pixoto allows these "few" to ruin Pixoto for everyone else. Their "fun" isn't about photography it is about seeing how much rule bending they can get away with. I hope Jason is reading these posts because the "few" are openly flaunting as much. Their mockery of Pixoto's rules has substantially damaged the credibility of this site and could ultimately destroy it. Maybe that is what they want.

For now, this "whiner" is going to head the advice of "never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience." I'm going to quit reading their blather and get back to exploring life through the lens of my camera. I thank GOD for giving me the creativity to shoot more than one subject, the character to play by the rules and the wisdom to know the difference between having "fun" and being a bully and a cheat...

Not exactly a crime to not have a love of photography or to only be here for the win, but it doesn't say much for integrity, does it?

The bottom line for me is that it makes no sense to ban certain subject matter because a couple of people dominate the category with redundant and (eventually) boring, repetitive images. There may be other folks one day who might like to submit lilies, or train tracks or cows pulling men through the mud on carts. BUT there may be something to be said for limiting uploads to a specific category to one or two a day or a set number a week or a month. Or enforcing the "too similar" rule a little bit better (though right now, we can't even get miscategorized images moved in a timely manner, so I doubt the folks here are going to jump all over similar images.)
Personally, for me, this isn't the right way to address this problem. It smacks of punishing everyone for the actions of a few.

Ronnel....as heart wrenching as your above statement was.....Im not sure this is the place to be preaching about God, Last time i checked he wasnt an Architect, he wouldnt want "His" creations to be represented just for the competative aspect & certainly wouldnt want "His" beautiful creations to be so over processed.

Because surely he would have created them so perfectly in the first place.

Yes! We can preach about God anywhere and everywhere to show His goodness and greatness and help everyone to love, respect and appreciate each other's work or masterpiece. In the Bible, God commanded His people how to build a temple for worship. So, God is the Creator of everything.

Stop repeating yourself Ronnel. Its extremely boring.

You obviously understand perfect English....so im not sure as to what you dont understand.

Now...please listen......Nobody here is upset about the image score you receive on your images....Nobody in envious....nobody is jealous .

Nobody here hates Lilies, nobody hates railway bridges, nobody hates mosques. Are you following so far Ronnel?........

What everyone has a problem with is......the constant postings of the exact same thing......numerous photos of the exact same subject. Your all playing the system....your all bordering on rule breaking. Its gone beyond silly.

You know the exact problem....So please....stop embaressing yourself with your silly defence & preachings about God.

Ronnel....You obviously have every right to voice your opinion...but please understand the subject before commenting.

The problem here is that theres certain people posting numerous photos of the same subject....Lilies, Railway bridge & a Mosque. So........and think carefully before you answer.....Are you suggesting that your or their area has only these 3 things to offer?. Because i can glance around my living room & find hundreds of things to take photos of.

Nobody took any freedom away from you Ronnel. Speak sense.

I understand the subject and I speak sense. How about the other foreigners from Europe, America or other countries who travelled here and had these photos of bridges, lilies, temples, mosque. Do they have the right to submit those photos? I'm sure, they have the right! Our God is so Great, so Strong and so Mighty, there is nothing my God cannot do. Do you have God? Do you believe in God? If you don't have and you don't believe in God, don't say nothing at all! I'm sorry, but I believe in God and my subjects are not limited. I'm just showing and sharing my photos one at a time. Nothing funny!

Ronnel, these travellers from Europe or wherever would be smart enought to take a few pictures of the lillies, post the best of them once and for all and then move on to something else. That's what smart people do. Only people with limited imagination would post those same photos over and over again until everyone is sick of them, and on purpose piss off everyone by joining with some friends to increase the number of those stupid lillies. Because, face it, that's what you guys are doing and you know it perfectly, at this point, it's pure provocation. We can do it, so we do it and screw everyone who doesn't like it. Your constant preaching about God is another example of your single-mindedness. You make me think of how you cannot get a car moving forward once the wheels get stuck in the mud.

Pixoto Team and Mr. Jason Kiefer, PLEASE , "NO" to CRAB MENTALITY in Pixoto!

A crab mentality is a type of thinking in which a person tries to pull others down if he or she can't get ahead. The term “crab mentality” is used to describe a kind of selfish, short-sighted thinking that runs along the lines of “if I can't have it, neither can you.” It is also specifically refer to people who pull other people down, denigrating them rather than letting them get ahead or pursue their dreams. As a general rule, an accusation of having this type of mentality is a poor reflection on someone's personality.

This concept references an interesting phenomenon that occurs in buckets of crabs. If one crab attempts to escape from a bucket of live crabs, the others will pull it back down rather than allowing it to get free. Sometimes, the crabs seem almost malicious, waiting until the crab has almost escaped before yanking it back into the pot. All of the crabs are undoubtedly aware of the fact that their fate is probably not going to be very pleasurable, so people are led to wonder why they pull each other back into the bucket instead of helping the clever escape and succeed.

Ronnel, your mentality really tells how you think of yourself and your photography -- that is --- it is the best and others are just pulling you down to the ditch. For me, that is a selfish assessment of oneself. The new rule will affect everybody and not only you, so to conclude that it is designed to pull you down is absurd. Has Pixoto decided which images are to be temporarily banned? So what's the fuss? Are you anticipating the obvious? Well, maybe you're right, but don't get too paranoid, we're all here to enjoy. Good luck!

Aye, they are sweating...imagine, if no more lillies were allowed, they would actually have to take pictures of some other unfortunate plant. That would probably make their whole universe crumble !

Marie Jirousek, Who is sweating? Is it hot there? All the plants are all fortunate and the whole universe will not crumble. God is in control. I thought you don't want to talk to me, why are you still commenting, he he he, I'm really sure now that you are enjoying. This makes me happy, commenting to a person from the other side of the world.
