Over-represented subjects

Is there going to be some news soon on over-represented subjects? On the Category Descriptions page, in the section on this topic, it says: "We will not be accepting images noted above for next 6 months (until end of April 2015)."

Well, April 2015 ends tomorrow :-)

Are the current over-represented subjects going to be taken off the list, or will they stay? Will any new subjects be added?

An update from Pixoto management would be appreciated :-)

I agree. It's funny about those water lilies .... I was looking through some photos yesterday evening that I took on vacation a few years ago and came across some water lily photos, including a couple of really nice ones. I thought about submitting them here but just couldn't do it :-)

I personally was so glad to have the non-native women in ceremonial head dresses removed from submission, as I find that extremely offensive--being a Native American myself. Anything making mockery of any religion or culture is offensive to me!

But I do miss the water lilies! :) I know people jump onto a band wagon with fake drops on roses and lilies, and the last few months on other flower--not to mention the proliferation of the backside of flowers! But hopefully such fads will fade away and we'll be on to the next thing. I still believe that superior images rise to the top, regardless!

Well said, Karen. Culture and Religion should only be represented in a respectful manner!

Also...the other night after some late night duel voting, I kept seeing the backs of flower petals every time I closed my eyes :O

Yep Ad, a very naive decision by Pixoto Management. The site's attained respect is diminishing with all technical flaws and refusal to discuss it, or even worse, handle it. Let alone, listen to customers' wishes.

Isn't it quite unexpected?? Well.. the reasons for banning all those images are still live and no clue as to why Pixoto decided to removes it..

We, some members of Pixoto humbly request the Management to kindly reinstate the ban....

Totally agree with everyone, until people learn self restraint and that there are other kinds of subjects out there we need the ban back, and one or two other subjects added to the original banned subjects.

I agree too. The time of the ban was way too short -- it seems those photographers were just patiently waiting for the ban to end and now Pixoto is right back where it used to be. The ban accomplished nothing, now.

What would be great is if the "powers that be" could allow users to block 1 or 2 categories. Of course if you block the category you can't post photos in it either.

So if someone dislikes the flowers they can block that particular category and only vote on flowerless duels. Since they aren't participating in the flower pools no harm done, right?

I would think that would be make everyone happy.

I went through a few of my favorite groups and reported images that were SERIOUSLY in the wrong area. That should keep them busy. Really 20 birds in the amphibian group?! Alligators?!
And the grand finale ... A BEAVER in amphibians HA HA HA HA

They have a lot more to worry about than these small it could go either way photos HA HA HA

Hello Brook, all of those you mention belong in Animal category. Since awards are issued on category level, images duel each other regardless of subcategories. So images you mention are all in correct category.

Brook, one thing that's important about Pixoto to know is that subcategories mean nothing. NOTHING. If you post a photo of a pregnant woman in People and put it into the Portraits of Men subcategory, it's fine. If you post a photo of a cup of coffee in Food and put it into the Alcohol subcategory, it's fine. And, as you now know, if you post a photo of a beaver in Animals and put it in the Amphibians subcategory, it's fine :-)

I believe the reason for sub categories is that images duel against each other in these sub categories before duelling against other images in the broader main category.

What is amazing me is the fact these photographers are poisoning their own pools.

The top flowers are waterlilies 3 of the 5 from the same person. Isn't he selling his flowers short by competing with himself?

I have a TON of kitten photos. Why? My family volunteers with the largest no kill rescue group in our city. Due to this I have been elected as the unofficial photographer for the group. As stated I have a LOT of kitten photos as good pics saves lives. Do I upload every single one the same week? Of course not! Not only would I compete against myself I would hate to drowned the kitten pool making it so people hit the "skip" button as they are sick and tired of seeing cute kittens ~ as if there is such a person HA HA ~

My point is common sense should tell them less is more.

Now if I see a flower competing against ANYTHING else the ANYTHING else will most likely get my vote. It would have to be van gogh good to get me to vote for a flower. Why? Because frankly they all start looking the same! I am just learning about photography and use sites like this as I honestly enjoy looking at other photographers' work. It helps me LEARN what I like and what I don't like. If I can't bring myself to vote for a flower I can promise you I am not the only one! These photographers are selling their work short.

On the flip side I won a #1 of the day by default. i was the only one to submit anything in that category HA HA HA

Brook, the financial incentive to win the #1 Best of the Week is enough to make many photographers do things they might not otherwise do if there was no financial gain to finish first for the week.

Many of us have lobbied that the cash prize for Best of the Week be replaced with something else, something non-monetary. Pixoto has indicated they are open to the idea of removing the cash prize, but there has been no movement on that either.

Cash prize for #1??!?!
Where the hell is that?!?! I didn't know there was cash involved!

I know I had a few people who bought a few of my things via commission this week. I made a grand total of 75 cents. I told my husband I was going to use the cash to buy the EF 300mm F/2.8 now that I am a professional.

Chances are you could hear him laughing from your place ... still...

Ok, I just found the weekly cash prize amount.
I could see where $150 a week for the larger categories could get people's attention. I would think it would be smarter to flood a less used category though rather than hoping to win in the flower categories HA HA

I may be wrong but I think the idea of uploading hundreds of pics is an attempt to get overall points for one's profile, and not for individual pics. If someone gets descent scores, say 575 to 600 on hundreds of pics they may get enough points to earn a Photographer of the year award on their profile page,

Whereas someone who uploads far less pics which are higher quality and earn greater scores, their overall profile points will not be enough to outscore the person with many, many pics of descent scores, because the heavy uploaders have the advantage of overwhelming numbers. regardless of quality or interest they may or may not generate..(just my 2 cents).

I agree with RJ, just vote them down. I will rarely vote for a flower ...and the thing better be smoking hot with gold shooting out its 'arse =) If its 2 flowers I will either pick the one that I like or hit the SKIP button. I use SKIP a lot with the flowers as I refuse to vote between 2 meh pics. I feel it brings the quality of the site down as a whole when meh pics are dominating. Of course everyone has a different "meh tolerance" button which is what makes the world so much fun and people like Charlie seem a wee bit nuts.

You may love the water lily but no matter how hard you try it will never love you back. That is a lot of photos that are exactly the same. Branch out sweety. What about rocks? Trees? Mature Content? Street photography is extremely popular right now. Mature Content WITH the water lilly will keep many a guy from complaining...

Jane, it's #1 in the week, not the day .... and there has to be a minimum of 1,000 photos submitted into that category that week :-)

http://www.pixoto.com/photography-com...

This is a big reason -- I think, and others think -- that the extremely popular categories with lots of entries are so cut-throat.

Almost correct...You have to get number one in the category for the week, not the day, And here is the important part, there must have been one thousand or more images entered in that category that week,

Number one for the week and a thousand entries along with yours for that week and you win two hundred dollars. That was the rules the last time I read them.
