What is a Novices Only category. People who do not earn from photography are novices or starters are novices, please explain. Photography is my hobby , so do I come under novices category. I see some really great pictures in that category. How is Pixoto going to judge whether a person is novice?

Dipali - see http://blog.pixoto.com/2012/05/new-ca... for the rules. We really wanted to see if this worked as a solution to the frustration of some members. If it does we will dynamically restrict the category based on awards won.

well sir... with my apologize. It seems now for Novice also get biased when player seems to enjoy in Novice while his/her photo actually really good enough to put in Regular Category, they stay in Novice and win again and again, and this is make me fustated. And meanwhile for some player has two or more account, they put one account in Regular and another account for Novice. As we know as long as this player didn't win award in Regular, so they will stay in Novice. Ahh really suck!

So Please, consider again as fast as you can to change the rules for Novice Only. Because I think it seems still getting frustated for Member who really get started for photography. And I really really agree for restricting in Novice Only based on Award Won.... Thanks

I think the 5% rule was a good starting point, but I agree that it's too easy to just stay parked in the three "safe" categories of Mobile, Photoshop Art, and Novice.

Maybe you could take the #1 photo in the Novice category each month and exclude that tog from using the Novice category going forward. That would move at least 12 photographers each year out of the Novice category. Honestly I'd say any of the top 20 novice images from last month could compete for top honors in non-novice categories.

I don't think it would be good to clear out too many users from the Novice category each month or the competition will not be any good in that category and suddenly you'll have winning photographs that aren't actually good.

Another option might be to exclude someone from the novice category once they have accumulated a certain number of points in the Novice category, or once they have accumulated a certain number of 5% or better awards in the Novice category.

I'm still trying to get an image that will crack the top 5% in Novice, but I wouldn't mind being kicked out of the area once my images are good enough. I think it would be sort of an honor.

I'm not exactly sure why the Mobile or Photoshop Art categories are excluded from the 5% rule. The top photos from the Photoshop Art category are often on top of the overall leaderboard. Including those two areas in the 5% rule might also help solve this concern.

But the frustration will remain....and the novice class is already being misused.I am not classed as a novice because I have some 5% awards yet compared to many I am....so what chance do I have of winning...

I thinkj no chance. I had a flower which lost against a candle and then I saw a duel of a fly against a man's portrait !!!!!

I think if we all just keep the basic fact in mind that Pixoto is giving us all a chance to get better in what we love and rather appreciate the site than criticize, frustration would be allot less. Lets face it, there are millions of photos running through this site and managing it can not be easy!

You're right Sharmine but you just joined yesterday and you didn't enjoy the pixoto of last year when I was really fun without cheating, duplicates, bad voting etc. But there were by far less players and less pictures.
Managing this site cannot be easy? Sure not. These guys do a lot of work. I wonder if they still have time to do something else. I don't know how many people work on it because we know only 3 in this forum but they could need more people to help them. And now that we have this report button, I hope every (!) player uses it. And use more the forum area to report abnormities. If everybody helps eveybody we are on the way to make it better (as good as it was at the beginning, hopefully)

That's right. Pixoto needs people like us to help, they can't do it all. If you see someone break pixoto rules, do something about it. If we want the cheating to stop, we as members, must help.

I just looked in the novice category, most of the top 10 photos are from members who have won MULTIPLE awards (30 plus), including top 5% yet they still post their images in the novice category.

I think perhaps the rules for the novice category should be changed to say

If you have won more than 10 awards in ANY Category (including novice) you are now in the big leagues so stay out of the novice category.

Where is the challenge if you stay in the novice category with 30 plus awards?

Yeah...sometimes... they have more than one account to make a cheat, then they come to Novice just to get an award. They didn't care to give a chance to others. And for Pixoto how about to change the rule for Novice that give maximum award or Photographer point, and if reach the maximum... so stay out from novice!!

I did report someone who was posting images in the novice category and then posting same pics under professional but using a different name. As far as I can tell the "professional account" was deleted.

this is right. When the novice category came up I didn't really know what it means and I posted a picture into it. I thought this is for amateur and I am one. Then I got a mail saying I cannot post in the novice category because of my 5% awards. So why can other people do it? Thanks Linda, I didn't check but sometimes in the duels I see really nice novice pictures

I had posted a little while ago that there is no rule for "graduating" novices (something along the lines of what Linda suggest).

http://community.pixoto.com/pixoto/to...

Currently, a (legitimate) novice has no real incentives to "un-novice" himself/herself. The Pixoto photo submission program can very easily block non-novice from submitting to novice categories (if it does not block, then there is some serious programming problem).

I only joined a couple of days ago although I have been participating in the ImageDuels for month(I like to see what other are doing and also helps me to learn what my eye likes). Winning an award is secondary for me finally posting photos, I agree with Sharmaine in that this site helps us get better at what we love, unfortunately "competition" always brings out the ugly.

I won about a hundred awards and a top spot for the day in Novice, the option was removed forever, since then almost a year, I have one one award in other categories, which was a top 20%, generally I cannot even get into the 500's much less 600's or 700 outside of Novice. Even tho I feel my photos are good, voters disagree outside of Novice, I took that as a challenge, and upped my equipment, The quality of my photos has grown dramatically but my awards have become non existent, to a point where I only post just for a laugh now. Yesterday a perfectly composed, focused, lit picture lost numerous times to well one was an out of focus macro shot of a caterpillar... Today the account and photos get deleted forever.. Many other sites which seem to be much more photographer friendly

Steve Sprague, I am wondering first about why you could get that many awards in Novice. since I got my first award there I was restricted from even posting another in that category. perhaps there is a problem with your account? maybe your pictures since then haven't been duelling in the proper category? something doesn't add up.

ok, upon close exam, I see that your novice wins were before they changed the rule... that makes sense. and that your subsequent photos have all duelled to nearly exactly 100 duels, then quit, so you are getting your pro-duels. and not a single one more it seems. it is a mystery.

I see Rifaphotoart top photographer of the year still have photographs in the Novice category, and close to the top. Seems nothing has changed in months. Most all the top photos are from experienced pro photographers. it must make them feel awesome to compete and win against amateurs, and shows Pixoto has made no attempt to improve the site.
