I had this problem last week, at one point the novice option was not available, then it appeared again.

Today the novice option has gone again, coincidentally I won an award in the novice section yesterday as well.

If you won a 5% award you're not a novice anymore.

I don't understand this. I joined Pixoto in November and I've never posted in novices. Instead (because I'm trying to go pro) - I've been busting my girlie balls trying to get a 5% or a ranking with my little 20D because I'm pretty sure it will help my portfolio but also because it means my work is meeting the sort of professional standard the industry is looking for. So I got my first 5 % last week and I was well chuffed!

So when I hear people say that they can't submit work to novices because they're too good... and they're COMPLAINING about it....!!!!!??? My head just explodes!!!! lol.

my view is.....
I can upload to the pro section and finish in the bottom 5% with all my pictures
or
I can post in the novice section and then depending on where the pictures finish I have an idea of which are the better pictures, and hopefully I can learn from this and improve my photography.

Peter and Mike - Thanks for pointing this out. We are having a problem with the novice category filter. I have adjusted both of your accounts and they should work now.

Israr - unfortunately your #8 in Commercial and Journalism makes you ineligible for the novice category.

Okay so thats how it works. Though it has been just 5 months that I've got my hands on DSLR photography, but still I'll take it as a challenge to compete the big guns :).

Thank you very much ...I am fairly new to Pixoto and to photography so having the Novice category is such a blessing.I do agree that once I get the hang of it all I will post and have posted in the main category but winning mostly top 20% of the day awards in the novice section shows me I still have some work to do before taking on the Big Guns!!I only have one top 20% of the month awards so far but have been able to rank #1 of the day so I have some hope ! I am working with a new to me camera( no DSLR here!!) that cost me a hundred bucks and I still have alot to learn.Thank you for giving me a place to fine tune this wonderful art form !!!!!

Apparently I've lost access to the Novice category too and without any notification. I'm particularly miffed about it as I've only been shooting for about 6 months and I'm mostly fumbling my way along some serious learning curves.

More than anything else, I use this site as a way to learn about my work (through scores) and to examine other photographer's work as a way to challenge my own creativity moving forward.

I can't compete in the other categories successfully (and I'm not alone) so I hope you will re-consider how the Novice category is structured.

Thanks in advance.

Pam - the reason you are not able to submit to novices anymore is that you won two Top 5% awards in the wildlife category. Many photographers try for months before they are able to achieve that feat. Your images are fantastic and I think you're selling yourself short to think you can't compete in the main categories. Sure - you won't win as many awards but you have already proven yourself a worthy competitor.
