I think it VERY unfair that when you get "lucky" with ONE picture in ONE category, but are still very much a NOVICE, that all of a sudden you are thrown in with CLEARLY PROFESSIONALS! I have only had my Nikon 5200 for literally less than 3 months and have had NO PROFESSIONAL training whatsoever, soooooo wouldn't that be what the NOVICE CATEGORY is for??? I think the rules on the NOVICE CATEGORY are waaaaay off base. PLEASE fix this problem and realize that is is very discouraging for us who are TRULY NOVICES! I didn't realize that was the way it would be or I would have never entered anything @ this point other than the NOVICE CATEGORY....

I just went and peeked at your photos... you have some very nice photos....you have a good eye and a good camera... I would think that you will hold your own out of the novice category for your photos are a lot better quailty than a lot that get pulled up for the duels... be proud to be out of novice category so quickly!

When I joined a year or so ago.. I elected to not stay in novice, and I didnt have a camera nearly as nice as yours...I was using a decent little point and shoot.... I think I only posted two photos there and then jumped in with the big boys.. figured I would sink or swim... but what it made me do.. was to work harder to create better photos.. it was the best learning device I could have ever done... and I am grateful now that I did that. I still have my ups and downs.. more than I want to have....but the images that don't do well. just make me want to go figure out to create a better photo next time...

JoAnn, thanks so much for the encouragement :) I appreciate you taking the time! I know there is so much more I need to learn, and I'm sure I will, but I just still don't agree with the Novice rules. Anyway, I certainly do appreciate your help and caring :)

Hi Debbie, like JoAnn I have taken a look at your pics and agree that you have a good eye and have some very nice pics there.

I didn't even bother submitting pics to novice when I joined up a bit over a year ago. I got my first DSLR camera in July 2012 and was posting here in August 2012. The first couple months where lean and it was a sharp learning curve but I have not regretted mixing it with the more experienced togs here as it has made me a better photographer. I'm still learning and I 'm sure you will do well.

I found that going out and taking lots of pics is a good way to improve, I also watch a few "how to" vids on YouTube that have helped. It's worth having a look.

Thanks, Mark for the encouragement! I really need that right now & appreciate others' input. Thanks so much for taking time. I know there is still so much I can learn. I have DVDs that came with my Nikon, but haven't really had time to sit down and learn from them. I spend LOTS of time out taking pictures and just enjoy nature and my pets so much. I'm sure I will learn more as time goes on. Again, thanks so much for your kindness. It's easy to get discouraged, because we are always our own worst critics.

Just one more thing to add to this discussion, however, is the fact that some of my pictures actually had better scores in the Novice category than some others who have won, but I'm assuming that after that first day when I scored in the other category, that made me not be allowed to receive the awards that I felt I should have still gotten in the Novice category since I WAS allowed to still enter those pictures in the Novice category before the award was given for the dog picture. It's just confusing to me.

You also have to look at what category the photo are posted in....that can make a difference.
When I first joined pixoto I did a photo that wound up giving me a 1st place for the day, the week and the entire month.. and I still didnt win a cash award because there were not the required no. of entries in that category...
I guess sometimes you just have to say.. it is what it is.. sometimes you win.. sometimes you don't. For me the object in all this .. is just to enjoy what I am doing and try to one day get that one good shot that will give me a good ride..and get into the 700's.. only been there a couple of times.. but I shall return...lol...

JoAnn, I really do value your advice and opinions, given the amount of awards and the beautiful photos that you have done. For me, it's not so much about the cash (even though that would be great). It's about just the fact that seeing someone in the same category (Novice) get awards for their photos when mine actually had a higher score seems unfair when it's based on the one photo that just the day before I won my first award in the Dog category for. Also, seeing people keep posting for weeks in the Novice category & wracking up awards, while my photos that I posted on my first or second day, aren't receiving awards even though they are higher on the leader board. That's the part I don't understand. I guess maybe I'm not clear on how the awards are given?? As I'm sure you are, I'm just wanting to grow and learn as a photographer. That;s why I just want the recognition I feel due, so when I see someone keep posting in the Novice category, but my photos are being discounted because of an award in another category, that frustrates me.

BUT, you're right, it is what it is.....lol My husband says that all the time too & he's a wonderful inspiration to me :) He bought me both my cameras and surprised me with them. My first one is just a point-and-shoot Panasonic, but man, have we ever gotten good use out of it. Actually, the picture that I have the highest score on was taken with that camera and so is the picture that I won my 3rd highest score on. And, BTW, we both enjoy photography. It's just that I have more time and I think I'm a little more passionate about it than he is.

I'm sure you will achieve the 700s many times :)

Don't forget there is nothing from stopping you from resubmitting your "novice" pics in the other categories (the ones that haven't won an award). You might surprise yourself with the results.

Once again thanks so much for the encouragement, JoAnn & Mark. I have never been very competitive in many things, but I guess my passion for photography is greater than any other hobby I've had before. You 2 really did inspire me! I have been out ALL day working on taking pictures and hope to find time to actually WATCH my DVDs for the Nikon this weekend. I also look forward to seeing yours :)
