New Proposed Category Structure

Hey All. We've taken a look at all of your feedback and have come up with proposed changes to category structure. We, of course, couldn't do everything that people wanted and we have had to make compromises to keep number of categories to a reasonable level (and to avoid duplicates). The category changes we are proposing are in the document located at this location:

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?...

Please post your comments to our changes here. Some we will be able to address.

Note: Probably the most common suggestion that we have NOT taken made adjustments to here is that of HDR. We feel that HRD is photography and belongs in the category with other images of the same type - not in it's own category . HDR images should be Tagged with HDR (please feel free to do this to any HDR image) so that one could look at the best HDR images overall.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Looks good! In which category will splash come? It can come under food and abstract both. Could you make a page describing the categories and link it on the image submission page so that we could refer to it.

I think that definitions need to be added start at the category level and gradually add at the subcategory.

Given recent discussions thread about certain "disturbing" pictures, Photojournalism may require a definition even more (for example, what do you expect to see under War or Street?)

Jason, Fantastic additions. Thank you for listening to our requests. Naturally what you have done still won't satisfy some people and that goes with anything. But I for one am thrilled with the changes. I also hope that when an image is in the wrong category it will be moved to its rightful place asap. I know that creates more work for you, but it needs to be applied.

I admire your dedication to the site, it makes this site an enjoyable place to be.

Not until we start bringing in some revenue. ;)

But that should be soon with the addition of premium accounts and some advertising over the next couple weeks.

Nice work Pixoto!

There is a logistics issue with recategorizing/combining/splitting things. In other words, how do you plan to deploy the new categories? Will legacy photos move to the new categories? If yes how? Will you ask folks to move them? What happens to awards earned in affected categories, etc?

Can there simply be a rule that images with child nudity will not be allowed on the site? It would mean moderation.

In the document above it shows wether a subcategory will be moved or created. If it is moved all images and awards will go with it. If we are deleting a category or subcategory, and we aren't moving all of the images in it somewhere else, then we will move all of the images out of it manually. The only images that will be resubmitted are those in the Themed Contest category.

There will be a little funkyness around this because we may end up with two #1s in the same category or have missing numbers as well.

If you guys have thoughts on a better way to handle this - please let me know.

Elaine, such rule consist on site. But some people tend to disregard it and then such images enter the contests.

I hope that protecting the children from accidental or thoughtfull posting of their nudity has a lot of sense and also a greater priority than chasing the awards.

Pitty, but the trend to present child nudity, as well as brutality, abuse, molesting etc. seem to be rising. Perhaps many people haven't even read the site rules. That "badge" calling Togs to join the contest and win up to some $$$$ tends to be great deal more visible than the rules!

The proposed new categories are great. They will solve a lot of indecision and they will also promote more changes later..Such is the nature of "advancement"....

Sounds like a good start. I would have liked a humour category that would be a shift from the more serious nature of most of the photos. It would be fun to plan shots for that category as well as viewing them. Thanks for everything, though! Love this website. :)

Can you please add "TOY" in Sub-Categories of Fine Art. Toy Photography is a popular field, so it's a good change if we make a separate sub-category to it. =)

Any thoughts on "candid" vs "posed wedding photography categories? Are wedding model shoots and workshop images allowed in weddings vs. "real" wedding images?

No matter what the categories are currently or in the future, I think it is paramount that there is a separate page explaining the categories, and even give a few examples (what's the meaning of having categories, if we not point to something to say, this belong here, and this does not).

For example (and I expect to here plenty about it). Under what criteria, these two top-ranked photos should be considered under the "Fine Art --> Places" categories (and not to any number of other, non-fine-art categories).

Not that I am necessarily against this photos, but I have no way to judge whether I should report them or not. Whether I should submit my sunset pictures, or my horse picture to this category, or, whether categories matter, or not, etc.

The scope of a categories (and even its subcategories) need to be defined, for otherwise, we going to be discussing about misplaced photos ad nauseam.

How about a separate category for entertainers performing, and portraits of entertainers? Also, it doesn't seem to be an issue yet, but sports action vs sports portraits?

The proposed categories are really going to be great. I would really like to see Black and White put back into the mix and was sorry to see it isn't being considered, good black and white is a joy to view. I agree wholeheartedly with bluetoothDrummer, we really need to have the category definitions listed to remove the doubts when voting. Thanks for listening in this case.

Can you also tell us when this will happen? I also would like to have a b lack and white category. The origins of photography where in black and white and as Shirley mentioned, black and white photos are a joy to view

I understand the point about Black and White but I don't think that a category is the right way to do it. Categories are really about the content/subject of the image and not how it was shot. If you want to look at the best B&W photography on the site it would be better if we could automatically tag those images so that you can view them that way. Right now thought only about 1200 images have been tagged.

We are still evaluating how much development work is involved in switching categories around. We definitely hope to have it done within 30 days.

You're making a big mistake changing "fine art" to abstract. When anyone thinks about fine art photographs, it's usually black & white, and it has many sub-categories. Abstract, nudes, landscape, and macro, just to name a few. Everyone that knows fine art photography, has heard of Ansel Adams, and his work is "not" abstract!!! I've been a fine art photographer for over 30 years, I've also owned 4 art galleries, and I think you need to rethink your changes to that category.

I agree, you cannot change fine art to abstract. Whilst abstract may in some cases, be considered a subset of fine art the reverse is not the case.

We're actually not changing fine art to abstract. We're getting rid of Fine Art because it is duplication with other categories. It happens that most of the images in the "Fine Art/Things" category are abstract/water drops and we will recategorize the other stuff. Note that Fine Art/People will go to the people category and Fine Art/Places will go to the Landscape category.

I just took a look at the current leaderboard for Fine Art / Things and in truth of the top 100 maybe 2 are actual abstracts and 8 or 9 are water drops.

Sorry Will - i misspoke. I meant we are moving Fine/Art abstract to Macros and Abstract and recategorize the ones that are not waterdrops. Fine Art things stays intact under Products & Objects (which is really still life as well - I wonder if we can come up with a better name)

Well I'd simply call it "Still Life" as this would encompass Products and Objects etc and also give a catchall category for more traditional still life such as cut flower arrangements and bowls of fruit etc etc

I've just been here since yesterday and already the categories confuse me a lot while voting. When I see something that is definitely out of place I report it, but it isn't always very clear to me. The proposed changes look OK as they will remove what I now feel are duplicate categories, but I think to be able to see clear definitions would be great.

Especially the 'fine art' is confusing to me.

I have two feeling about this, the first is that there are way too many categories here. What next "child, age 2, blonde hair blue eyes taken from left side 3/4 length" category?

My other thought is that unless you intend only to duel within the subcategory then those subcategories are largely irrelevant
