Moderator Ratings for Challenges

  • Updated 5 years ago
In order to try to provide a better challenge experience for all of our members we are now offering community ratings of all challenge moderators. Community Challenges will be sorted with the highest moderator ratings first.

Here's how it works:
- Every time a challenge closes every person who entered an image in the challenge will be emailed to request feedback on the moderator
- This feedback is compiled and a "Moderator Rating" is created for the moderator
- When the moderator creates a new challenge their rating will dictate the position in the challenges list

Note that it will take some time for us to generate enough ratings for moderators so it may take a week or more before the ratings are meaningful.

We will also be offering more sort options in the future.

I accidentally clicked "yes" more than once -- I opened the same email twice. Sorry about that. It was the "Wildlife" challenge.

i'm not sure yes or no is the best way to rate this
what if the person is unhappy bc they were disqualified
or lost
you need more feedback like a survey

Without sending email to individual, it will be best if we get notification in our feed or any other place in our profile itself. Because most of the time we hardly open our email to rate a moderator..

what's the benefit of rating a moderator? It seems to me it won't help anything. We need a rule where the moderator can't enter their own challenge, a limit on how many challenges anyone person can start in a week, a limit of challenges overall, a staggered start so the rest of us don't have to vote on a stack of challenges at the same time.

I guess moderator rating is just an index which gives an overview about your performance in a challenge upon participants feedback[Now I have immense confusion about the term "Performance" ;)].

Now we can't restrict a moderator to enter in his won challenge, because you may want to challenge the world with your particular image or image category.

Limitation of challenge creation will not be so beneficial because it dose not harm anything. If you create 5 challenges or if 5 moderators create them it won't affect anything. Rather it increases more chances for participants to win.

You're tiptoeing around the problem, Jason. Rating a moderator will just cause a whole new set of problems with people voting negatively if they didn't win or score highly enough or have personal agendas against the moderator, or conversely their friends can give them high reviews when they don't deserve them.

Why don't you just prohibit moderators from entering their own challenges and be done with it!

makes total sense why would you enter your own challenge?

I agree. Out of what we call here "delicadeza" a Moderator should not enter his or her own challenge. How can you moderate yourself.

I agree with John, challenge moderators should be absolutely prohibited from entering their own challenges. And, do away with the "Judge's Award" and have votes determine the winners in all community challenges.

Jason, if, for some reason, you don't want to eliminate the Judge's Award, then it should be issued as a special prize and NOT replace any winners....and the moderator should be required to write up a one or two sentence blurb about why they chose that photograph. However, having said that, my personal preference would be to simply do away with the whole notion that the moderator can pick a winner. The community members who actively vote are the ones who should be determining the outcome.

Also, my understanding is that creating a challenge is a way to earn credits for yourself, right? Those credits should NOT be issued until after the challenge has run its course and they should only be issued IF the moderator earns an overall positive rating from that particular challenge. Too often, I think, people create a challenge merely to earn the credits, they never actually do any real moderation, such as checking their challenge to DQ images that didn't follow their rules, for example.

There is no point in rewarding a bad moderator. Moderators should have to earn those credits, not get them automatically.

I understand why a Moderator might create a challenge and want to be able to actually choose a winner. This would be the case for example for commercial uses where an advertiser would want a particular image. (Or is this not allowed in Pixoto?)
To create a challenge to boost one's credits sounds too self-serving though.

I have a feeling this will be a point of debate for years to come....

Moderators should never choose their own photo to win a challenge, but should never be prohibited from entering it. Pixoto community members vote the challenges, aside from the Judge's Award.

That being said, there will ALWAYS be those people who blindly click as quickly as possible in the voting (all voting) to secure more credits without having to actually look at the photos being dueled. You make the best of what you have to work with. :)

I agree that Moderators should not be entering their own Challenges. I put up a challenge because I want to see the creativity of OTHERS and to reward them for their efforts. I benefit from seeing the creativity in the images, since it may influence or spark something in me and my work.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a moderator entering their own challenge as long as there is a hard and fast rule that they can not award themselves the Judge's Award. I started to moderate challenges for specific wildlife to create some meaningful and fair challenges for wildlife shooters. Too many challenges are stupid, general or not well defined like "People With Ears" or "Mammals ". I like to see how I compare to other wildlife shooters based on popular vote but under tight parameters like: no zoo shots, no captive animals, no indoor shots, no multiple similar shots and no cropped head shots to keep it fare for all the truly wild shooters.

I don't think that there is any need for a Moderator to enter their own Challenge. Why even allow any hint of impropriety. If you want to win awards there are plenty of opportunities on this site to do so.

I am running a challenge at the moment and I have indicated that I will not enter the challenge and that the top award will be based on votes only. I will not be picking the winner. I hope by doing that and being clear in the challenge description it will mean a good, fair competition.

I am running the challenge the way I hope all challenges are run.

Now what is the sense of not entering your own challenge when every award from 2nd place on down is by image duels. You can't rig that. The reason you get to pick the winner (besides yourself) is because you created the contest and only you can judge what photo best delivered what you were looking for in your contest. That is why the moderator has a responsibility to define very precisely what they want the photos in their contest to express. The voters in image duels unless they were in the challenge don't even know what the contest criteria was.

We obviously differ on what we think should be awarded the top prize. You think it should be an arbitrary decision based on the moderators personal likes and dislikes.
I created the challenge for fun. If I wanted to find the best "Furry Animal" pic I cold just go through all the existing pics. Pretty easy.

I think it's best to have the voters pick the winner based on votes, it keeps the challenge fair and it ensures the most popular (not necessarily the best) gets chosen as the winner.

So far I have had only one pic that had to be DQ'd and that was because the person submitting it made a mistake and let me know.

I just read this from the email sent to me. I'm fairly new here but I will give my opinion. I agree with one person that previously said as long as a moderator doesn't do the self judging and pixoto people do the voting, why not let them in on the challenge? They will not be cheating anything?? And as stated, it is a great way to learn from others that enjoy similar subjects for shooting ...
yet I might add also that I do not think Jason in the original statement had anything to do with this subject? sorry if I'm incorrect.

Hello Cheryl, from time this topic was posted rules have changed and moderator can not any more enter challenges if moderator choose to select Judge's award.

I hope this helps.

Is there a connection between the moderator rating and the number of challenges he can open?
I mean if one moderator has 90 rating can he open more challenges than the other who has 50?
Thank you

Hello Nina, there is no connection, but we will reprogram challenge section so one user can open only 3 challenges at the same time. In the meantime, until we reprogram, please open only 3 challenges at the same time.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for Your quick response :)
That will be very nice if you limit to 3 open challenges for any user.
But if you didn't allready reprogram that, I ask beacuse Pixoto don't let me open a new challenge, there is currently 3 open challenges of mine, but I see other with so many challenges open, far away more that 3, so I don't understand? That's why I tought maybe it is related by the moderator rating or something else...

Hi Nina, I'm sorry, looks like reprogramming is finished (I'm sorry I wasn't aware of that). Other users must have opened challenges before update was made.

I hope this helps.

I see.. Well I find it right for every user to have no more than 3 open challenges at the same time... Someone was really exagerating with the number of challenges.. Now we all play by the equal rules...
Thank you

But now I did a challenge, but I made a mistake in the description.. so I went to EDIT it, and when I click on SAVE CHALLENGE, it says that I have too many open challenges and I couldn't do it. But I don't want to make a new challenge, I just want to edit my description till is still fresh open the new challenge... Help? Thank you :)

Nina,
We are trying to create a permanent fix for this bug, but in the meantime the only way the challenge can be edited is if you tell us what changes you would like made and we can make them for you. For now though, you won't be able to edit the challenge(s) yourself.
If you want, you can send your requested changes to me at Grant@pixoto.com . If you want the description or rules changed, copy and past your current ones into a word editor, make the changes, and then copy and paste the new text and send it to me.
