We will be rolling out a new system for community moderation of images on or before the next business quarter.

This will allow the community to penalize malicious user activity and promote overall fairness of all user activities.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled The author of a report should be known..

I think that, when an image was ' reported ' for whatever reason, the author of the image should know who made this report. It would be more ethical than to make it in the shade, in the anonymity.

Gerard, I like you, but I strongly disagree with your suggestion. I regularly report images that do not meet the standards of the category. If more than 25% of an image is man-made, I will report it if it is in the landscape category. If a flower is entered in Nature Up Close and is not covered with natural water drops, I will report that, too. I also report adults in images in the Babies and Children category and images of children in the People category if there are no adults in the image. All of these instances are clear violations of the category descriptions. It's not fair to allow them when they take away awards from images that are entered in the correct category. I would never report an image maliciously. I report images, not people. I once reported my brother's image that he entered incorrectly. I would expect him to do the same if he thinks I entered one wrong. I believe that my reports are usually right, but I know that I have been wrong from time to time. I do wish that Pixoto would notify me when they disagree with my report so that I will understand and will not make that same mistake again. That would be helpful.

I feel it is up to Pixoto to determine if a report is correct or not. It is up to Pixoto to moderate whether or not someone makes malicious reports by tracking how often someone makes a report that is not correct, especially if those reports are unduly directed to only a few photographers. Then Pixoto should take action to stop it, not the mob of users. I do not want to be subjected to the general population disagreeing with my interpretation of the rules and penalizing me by voting down my images because they don't like my reports. If Pixoto starts revealing my reports to others, I will feel my privacy is violated and I will never make another report. I suspect most users would feel the same way resulting in more and more images allowed in the wrong categories. If that happens, I will finally give up on this site and will move on.
