I was voted for the judges award at http://www.pixoto.com/challenges/stea... and now they're saying that this was just for fun and that they have a private panel of judges to decide the real winner. Is this even legal?

Hello Nathan, challenge was set up so Judge's Award will be chosen by the challenge moderator, so they can choose whichever photo they like (it doesn't have to be one with highest score).

I will ask for more clarification about this and let you know when I get feedback.

Nathan, it helps to always check the terms in the challenge before entering them -- personally, when a challenge says the moderator will pick the winner rather than the voters, I steer clear of those challenges. Just my two cents :-)

the challenge Nathan has linked is not a community challenge but one with a good prize, and it does show him as winning the judges award. What Nathan appears to be saying is that he has been told that doesn't matter, that the sponsors are going to pick their own winner.

I had a look at the challenge and it does say the moderator will pick the winner -- I know that's the right of a community challenge moderator but I'm not sure the moderators of sponsored challenges should be allowed to choose when there are monetary/valuable prizes at stake, especially such a big prize like this. The appearance of impartiality is important.

it looks like the sponsor is looking for photos specific to the event, probably for advertising and so they will choose those photos that are most appropriate for their purposes. This would have nothing to do with how good the photo is or how popular in the Pixoto community. it just makes their job of finding stock easier because it is all in one place, the advertising group won't need to search. They are the ones supplying the prize I think

I've just had a look at the additional rules, and there are lots of them.....so it does look like they can choose their own winners.
