First i will like to Show you yesterdays Image entries in this kategories:

* Animals: 654
* Animals-Dogs: 56
* Animals-Cats: 32

So, People who entered in Animals-category, had to duel against 654 Images to receive one of the 10 best of the day Awards! Not only that, Birds had to duel against Reptiles, they had to dual against fishes that had to duel agains elephants etc. The dueling against such different Animal species does not have the same homogeneous equation like if cats duel only against cats or Dogs dueling only against Dogs!
Whith only 32 entries (thirty-two) in Animals-Cats category is much much easier to be one of the 10 best Images of that day, you have a Chance of 31%!!!!!!

Yesterday in Animals-category they were, among other animals-subcategories:

Birds: 327
Insects: 94
Mammals: 87

As you all can see this Animal subcategories had way more entries than cats or Dogs, These subcategories also had to duel against each other because they dont have their own category!
I am sure that Birds always have much more entries than Cats or Dogs together. The only difference is that Birds dont have their own categorie. I like to understand why not?

I my self entered in 2014 only 15 photos in "Animals-cats" categorie and became "Best Photographer of the Year" whith only 6395 Points in Animals-cats!!!
Actually this is an Insult for all "Best Photographers of the Year" in the Animals categorie because it cheapens it up!!

As if find this is not fair at all to People entering in Animal categorie and much to easy for those other categories!

Either pixoto turns some subcategories to own categories or categories like cats etc. get Awards after Minimum entry of 100 - 200 Image entries, or put cats and Dogs in one categorie together.
Pixoto could also create a new categorie whith hyper term like "domestic animals" whith subcategories like Cats, Dogs and maybe some more.

Two great suggestions here, Renos! Merging Cats and Dogs into one category would give more prominence to the photographers who regularly compete in these categories. I would not put them under a "Domestic Animals" category, since, by the very definition of a domestic animal, dogs and cats would then be dueling against horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, etc., plus all your reptiles, which have, of late, been dominating the Animals category.

The suggestion of making birds a separate category has been offered before, to no avail. There are certainly enough images of birds submitted every week to warrant their own category, but it also would put a big hole in the Animal category, as would making insects a separate category.

The Animal category, imho, is the toughest category in which to compete, because it is such a wide ranging category where, as you point out, birds duel against reptiles and fish against elephants. I cringe every time one of my big cat images loses to a macro shot of some unknown bug with fake water drops on it.

My above comments are for images, if you want to see the leading contributors in Order, tap the leading images tab which gives you a drop down meme of images and contributors again you can see those for individual categories and this Month and last month appropriately using the drop down menus on the individual tabs.

Michael, thanks for your prompt response. I am, however, more confused than I was before. I had seen the drop down showing the top contributors. However, from reading John Larson's comment, he indicated the "Best Photographers" in each category were determined by taking the top 10 pictures each of them posted during the year, averaging them and the top 20 photographers got the nod.... Am I missing something here?

Bill, they used that system up until last year when they changed to total points accrued over the course of a year in a category, or as they call them Top Contributors. So now the winners are chosen on not just quality, but quality and quantity. If you enter multiple shots on a daily basis and they end up in the top ten for the day, week or month or top 5%, and if you can luck out and actually have a shot or two end up in the top ten scores for the year in your category, you will get additional hundreds of thousands of points added to your total.

If you check Top Contributors in Animals, as of today, Dennis Bartsch is in the lead with a whopping 3 million points on over 2400 images, most of which are top ten or top 5% images, and thus his high point total. I am currently 2nd with about half as many points but have only entered less than 1,000 images. I currently have three images in the top ten for the year in the Animals category but those huge additional points will not make up for the 1400 image advantage and the resulting scores Dennis will get for those images.

So to break it down, as simply as possible, post your brains out every day with images, and hope to get the recognition you feel they deserve, in terms of scores, and you will have answered the question posed in the title of this thread. ;)

As with your photos, that answer was fantastic. The system has developed clarity. NOW, I would like for you ans Dennis to do me one more favor and retire ...... ;-)

lol...Bill! My #1 image for the day, yesterday, was reported as very similar and deleted, though the head angle, looking at the ears of the animal, is clearly different, and by Pixoto rules, therefore should not have been deleted. If the deletion holds up you will very likely get my retirement, since this will be the proverbial straw.

I do want you to know I have been very impressed by your work of late and know that your efforts will continue to be recognized and lauded. Be happy with your improvement and growth and don't ever let those who become jealous of your talents dissuade you from moving onward and upward as I know you will do. Keep on clickin'' my friend!

Own Categories:
"Animal Cats" Entries: 29
"Animals Dogs" Entries: 68
"Animals" Entries: 484

Animals Subcategorie:
"Birds" Entries 247
"Insects" Entries 94

"Animal Cats" Category is once more beeing privileged, whith only 29 entries !!!

@John: I agree whith you, Animal category is one of the touphest categories to compete and at the same time Cats Category is like shooting fish in a barrel .

By the way there are some more categories that are privilaged and have it very easy:

"Wedding Category" Entries 22
"Abstract Category" Entries: 30
"Digital Art Category" Entries 50
"Food & Drink Category" Entries 57
"Nudes & Boudoir Category" Entries 06 (Only 6 they all get best of Day # Award )
"Public Holidays Category" Entries 10 (everyone gets a # best of the day Award)
"Sports & Fitness category" Entries 39

Its time that all categories receive same Treatment and to level the playing-field whith equal conditions so that all the Awards given have the same "value"!
The level of difficulty must be the same in all categories +/- 15-20% to ensure that Awards have same worth of quality in all categories!!!

Just one clarification Renos, we only award 20% of top images. If in whole category there are only 6 images entered in a day, only top 20% images will get award - in that case only #1 image will get award. Similar if only 10 images are entered in category, only #1 and #2 will get awards.

Since there are different number of images entered into different categories, awards have different point value. As example #1 award for image in category with 600 images will get 3600 points while #1 image in category with only 10 images will only get 60 points.

Also as it states on How Pixoto works: http://www.pixoto.com/about

"Important Note: ImageScores are calculated only within categories and subcategories and cannot be compared across categories. For example a photo with an ImageScore of 650 in Wedding is NOT by definition better than an image with a score of 600 in Landscape & Nature."

I hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your efforts Jasenka and the clear Statement !!

Fact is that in those certain categories whith very poor attendance someone can get #1 and #2 Awards easily Regardless of whether the Image Quality deserves it or not.
The dueling screening in those understaffed categories for #1 and #2 is permanently not operated in a balancing and reliable selection.
One think that should not go unmentioned is also that someone in "Animals Category" will never have the Chance to become "Best Photographer of the Year" whith same amount of Points as peöple in "Cats Categorie".
Someone will need more than 10x more points to become "Best Photographer of the Year" compared to "Cats Category" given that someones Photos are doing very good in duelling against 650 Images whilst someone in "Cats category" is duelling agains 30 Images.
For this reason Pixoto should work out a formula that gives certain Awards like "Best Photographer of the Year" only if someone reaches a Minimum of Points.
The "# best of the day" Award could be given if only a certain minimum number of Images are entered.
As i wrote above:
"I my self entered in 2014 only 15 photos in "Animals-cats" categorie and became "Best Photographer of the Year" whith only 6395 Points in Animals-cats!!!"

Now try to do became "Best Photographer of the Year" whith only 6395 Points and whith a poor attendance of only 15 photos for the whole year in "Animals category" ..... good luck !!

I have been saying this very same thing to myself!
I do rank in the top 10 in cats on a regular basis. Why? Not for the above mention of an easy win =) My family rescues and fosters kittens and I take photos to put them up on the internet to help them find homes. Due to this I HAVE A TON of kitten photos.

I also have lots of photos of snakes and lizards. I stopped uploading anything like that because they can't compete against baby monkeys and baby elephants. I don't blame anyone as I adore baby monkey photos way more than creepy spiders but it doesn't seem fair does it?

I just made a post that my cat photos from yesterday were not given a rank. I placed 6 7 and 8 and they were not awarded. This has happened several times to me and I have no idea why. Maybe because its a smaller group?

Interesting. I work with a feral cat program a get a great deal of pleasure from this. I think John Larson has finally explained the process so that even I can understand it.
