Since reporting doesn't seem to achieve anything anymore, I'm posting this here...Pixoto please do something about this player who is consistently uploading digital art category images into nature up close. Most of her pictures have very obvious fake water drops added. www.pixoto.com/nishidha?category=natu...
Alternatively if this is now allowed, please confirm so that I can add horrendously fake water drops to all my reject photos!

For instance,

just won against my photo.

Oh my... The first photo looks like any joe-blow tourist photo. I suspect some people vote on sentiment (in this case perhaps war memories) rather than on art, content, quality, etc...

Very interesting thread. The Pixoto team has quite a challenge ahead. It seems almost impossible to truly have a level playing field for the really fine photographers when composite photos are allowed. And when you consider the sheer volume of photos submitted, is it even possible to tackle the problem? Personally I feel it's a shame, but I DO deliberately vote against what appear to be composites/fakes unless it's in the Photoshop category. Kudos to the many talented "pure" photograhers... They never cease to amaze me.

I wish scores reflected what it took to achieve a particular capture. My fish shots were really high speed action shots- Koi swim fast? mine sure did! see video of how fast she would hit those turns I liked to photograph! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydC3RM...

These 2 photos were both taken right when she turned. The camera was given to me- stuck on 100 ISO. Capturing a clear shot at all took thousands of attempts! I lost count after 7000 frames in 2 years. I managed to take around 30 that aren't totally blurry. Try photograph action with the settings I used. It's nearly impossible- Those pictures are really an impressive achievement! The score of 572 says otherwise. (The second one is a pure photo)

At least I got a real camera for christmas and feel like I can finally produce the same level of quality as the other contestants. (Canon EOS REBEL T3) tho I managed to screw up and use 100 ISO! I'm learning!

100 ISO is usually the best setting if you want minimal noise. You probably need to use a flash set at an angle or a very fast lens if you're shooting low light, the built in flash or any mounted on the camera will reflect on the glass. Higher ISOs will give you faster shutter speeds yes, but at the expense of image quality - and those consumer Canons don't have the best in-camera noise reduction. You should be able to pick up a relatively cheap 35 or 50mm f1.4 which would help if you don't use flash (macro capability would be a plus). I seldom shoot at more than 200 ISO, and wherever possible I prefer 80 ISO (the Pentax K5 I used for most of my shots has possibly the best noise handling in the APS-C class, but you can still see the difference).

Have you considered turning your tank into a lightbox? If you drape some white cloth over both ends and place lamps behind it, you will get great light and no shadows in awkward places. You'd need the old fashioned tungsten or halogen bulbs, most of the energy saving bulbs don't give enough light.

The tanks were in my kitchen in Hawaii. I moved to California just over a year ago.
The big koi (11", 14" and 16" long) were donated to a restaurant maintained pond- so the public could get to enjoy her as much as I had- Plus they had outgrown the tank they were in. I now have a smaller 40 gal which is too small for Koi (or I'd get more in a heart beat!) My newer photos show my new tank- with its pair of gold fish. The fighting fish is cool to photograph but nothing will live up to the yellow and white Butterfly Koi.

I still have the Cool Picks for macro-

As for the glass flash glare, lighting issues, water distortion, visibility of tanks glass- I spent 2 years getting all that sorted out!

I learned to produce shots like this- where the existence of glass in undetectable. No trace of glare or flash burn
http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

Outside source of lighting interfered with the camera's ability to capture the shot without being blurry. Also- every light around me reflected in the glass or accented scratches in it. Back lit room with black drop behind tank- taking the photo at an angle to the tank- with the camera upside down- throwing the light flash (on red eye correction) above the frame- and you get this-

Not convinced about either of the roses, the first looks to have 2 light sources and if you factor that in the reflections are right. The other just has bad lighting, the drops are way over exposed. The bee shot is genuine, I have some virtually identical shots and they have the same appearance. I think the fine hairs on the bumblebees make them look as if they've been pasted in. The butterfly...well now, it has a black outline and a pin through it, obviously faked.

I agree and am discouraged by all of the above...with the exception of the photo with the 699 score .... the photographer is too talented to need to 'fake' it. I think the lighting is just too strong on the drops. But the rest .... jeeeeeeeeeeeeeez.

I'm happy to discover they added more forms of art that can be submitted-
cuz I'm not really a photographer- I'm a stone carver.

I cut and hand carve slate, marble etc. into colorful tropical 3D wall murals.
I specialize in tropical plants/flowers and sea life reef.

Here's a 18" x 22" solid slate turtle I carved. All the colors are just what was revealed when I carved the shell. The turtle is Just 1/2" thick in the middle and 1 cm at edges. I entered it but looks like voting isn't active on those yet.

Here's my own little contribution to the topic haha hah hah hah!

Submitted originally in early December (along with another silly one) because I was getting so grumpy already then with obvious fakes. I deleted it within a couple of days of submission, but uploaded it again yesterday for a lark.

Ghastly all round... hope it doesn't give anyone else nightmares! At least very few folks voted for it but nonetheless some did!

the ogre/troll on mushroom is a fast food outlet kiddy toy bought second hand at a school fete - placed on a photo of a bad photo of an Amanita taken hurriedly while watching my child in a pine forest. The photo of the troll was taken for the purpose of placing it on the mushroom - LOL!

Try this pair out

And

http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

Spot the stone formation on the mid- left is the same one. The guy lives in Brunei too, where they don't get too much snow. The first one is still an all time number three in rock and stone, with 762 points. It wouldn't be so annoying if it was done well, but its awful. if this wins anything for the year I think I'm really through with this site.

I do believe it takes time and skill to Photoshop/CS6...or whatever... But I wish they would categorize them as such. Especially when Example 1 above has the rock formation with nothing but horizon.... and the Example 2 shows the same rock formation with a forest behind it. But I wish these composites would be categorized as the Digital Art they are and not compete with 'pure' photos.

To compare image 1 to image 2 , rant about who dared to manipulate the image , added this or lost that ? I do not care . I post here because the feedback means something to me on a level that I can use to improve my images. That is my take on Pixoto .

you're entirely right on one level G, however the feedback is nullified and/or skewed - sometimes severely - by those whose intention is to cheat the "system".

Missing the point, this isn't a comparison or a rant, it's an example where the same material has been used to produce a (poor quality) composite. Composites are not photographs, they are false and a form of graphic art. If photographs have to compete with faked pictures, this is not a photography site and the scores are misrepresentative. Many members agree.

Shouldn't we be blaming the people that actually vote for those photos? If people did not like the photos they would not have such a high score and they would be forced to upload better photos. It's like having 5 people tell 50 people what they should and should not like. I happen to agree with you but a democracy is based on what the majority believes, even if they are morally and intellectually wrong. Art always has been and will be subjective.

In principle I agree with you 100% Andrew. However the problem is that folks are abusing the system to get the points - thus a photography site becomes a post-processing lab display unit...

And a photo seen for the split second it takes to vote for it- needs only look good over all- Rarely do people look close enough to see if its a composite or not. If its appealing - it gets picked.

there have been complaints about her but somehow she still manages to submit these not only fake images but improperly edited pics. to make matter worse, they are getting more votes than other more deserving pics from other togs

http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

this is just one example of her images. very fustrating . and someone even favorited her image. i really dont know what to think and what to say.
