Duplicate Duels

I spent some time voting tonight and noticed an issue that has only rarely happened in the past. It seems like every three or four duels, I get a repeat of the same two images that dueled against each other only a minute or so earlier. It was different pairs repeating, but I think that I skipped voting 15-20 times in about ten minutes because I remembered voting on that exact same pair previously. It stands to reason that I'd pick the same winner if I voted a second time. Someone else may have chosen the other image, so the results could be very different. It seems like there are enough duels to go around that I shouldn't repeatedly see the same duel over again in a few minutes. That makes me wonder about the results for my own images. Is one person getting the chance to vote for or against my image in a repeated duel? I don't have a problem with an image competing against another image more than once. I just think it should not be the same voter being given the chance to vote on that same duel. I hit skip, but I suspect most others just vote again. It doesn't seem fair.

That shouldn't be normal behavior. The only way I think it can occur is if there is a temporary error with our caching system. I will look into it, but we can probably also eliminate the possibility of the problem by not allowing the system to save a users vote for the same pair of images.

I'll address this by doing 2 things.

1. I'll create an interface why I can view the duel history for a specific user.
2. I'll identify what causes it.
3. I'll put in checks preventing it from occurring in the future.

Last week when I voted a couple of times I recognized the same thing. The pattern of duels had changed. First the same image appeared many times against different images in the duels. This happened with only a few other pairs in between. Then the same pairs started to appear. I also encountered very strange pairs with top images and images that obviously hadn't won that many duels. I didn't skip any duels but wondered could all of this be right. When I asked Jasenka about it she said that all voters are tested and will get false pair duels from time to time (duel ban algorithm). What is all of this then? A glitch or testing of voters or both? For the sake of fair scores I think it's very important that totally different different images are presented in duels for the same voter. This allows all images to be voted on by different members.

I agree, Mia. I think Scott will take care of it.

Scott, the repeated duels problem is still going on. It actually seems a bit worse tonight. I've had some duels show up three or four times with the exact same pictures in just a matter of minutes.

Update: Google has been having issues with their caching infrastructure, which as a result has had some impact in this occurring intermittently. We are in process of mitigating and preventing this from occurring in the future.

It wasn't nearly as bad last night. I only had a few duplicates.

I did a lot of voting tonight just to test the system after all the updates. Unfortunately I encountered a lot of repetitive pairs, that is exactly the same images dueling against each other. The same images reappeared also multiple times against different pairs. This is not a good trend. Fair scores can only be gained if different images are presented for the same voter.

Thanks for letting me know. The main point of the updates were to give me more visibility. I'll continue my research and let you know what I find.

My update allows me to review the complete history of a user's voting session. I just reviewed all of your voting and all the images you received while voting were unique. You did not see the same image more than once during your voting session. If you want, I can email you the stats.

Where are you seeing these repetitive pairs? Are you referring to the duel history of your images by other users?

This is not correct, I bumped into the same images over and over again in the manner I described. And no, I'm not talking about my own images or their duel history, but the images I voted on. Please send me the stats to my email. Now I will vote again and test what happens today. I find this extremely strange... Why would I report something I haven't seen?

Sorry, I was just making sure that I was not misunderstanding you. You stated repetitive pairs and I wasn't sure if you were referring to the duel history of images. As we discussed via email, *it is* possible to see the same images if you have a long lapse in dueling. This can also happen if we do a significant release.

As I forwarded to you, the only duplicates you saw were from > 36 hours ago. I will re-affirm that the system does expire your duel history after inactivity.

Hello everyone, I am going to mark this as solved. I believe it was an issue, but should no longer be occurring. If anyone suspects that they saw an image more than once, please let me know and I will review your history.

I am open to changing it back to in progress if something changes.

I want to thank everyone for their input!
