I love your website it is very addictive! However, I believe people have figured out how to throw the image duels. I came in at number three for the week of 10/9/11 and my Gary Fong image is incredible! Proud of number three, however some of these images that I am losing to, have no business even being in the competition; blury, horrible compisition, and so digital effected up that they don't even look like a photo. For goodness sake, there is a picture of a bridge in fourth place! The Gary Fong lightsphere is not going to effect the lighting. There are pics on here where softboxes are clearly seen in the eyes (catchlights) that's not a lightsphere. I don't mean to be a crybaby or a complainer, but this competition was very disappointing to me.

Hi Chris,

I'm sorry to hear you're disappointed! We are working hard to ensure Pixoto is a great experience for everyone.

That said, I believe you misunderstand how Pixoto works. We are completely independent from Gary Fong and offered to run a contest for them. If you entered an image in the Gary Fong contest, it was also entered in our standard weekly/monthly contest. As such, you will see it on our weekly leader board amongst images that were definitely not shot using a Lightsphere.

The url to check you rank for the Gary Fong contest is:
http://www.pixoto.com/images/contests...

That's not to say that everyone entering the Gary Fong Lightsphere contest used a Lightshere to shoot their submission. We have definitely noticed images that wouldn't require the use of a Lightsphere. Those images never really stood a chance of winning anyways and if they had... would have been disqualified. Unfortunately, there is no way to verify the use of a Lightsphere from a technical perspective.

The winner of the Gary Fong contest will be required to sign an affidavit stating they used a Lightsphere.

Anyways, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. Hopefully this helps clear things up a bit. Let me know if you have any further questions.

I appreciate your quick response... I can't wait to see the explanation regarding the use of a Lightsphere in the image "The Fire of a Mothers Love" or as I like to call it "Apocalyptic Mama"... The sun is coming in from the right, there is a photoshop sun glare in the back, the shadows all run to the left and the mama is too far away from the camera for a flash to even have any effect on lighting the subject... You guys should have placed this in the photoshop category as it is so clearly evident there is no lightsphere used in this photo!

Don't worry about me... I'm just mad because I didn't win! haha Take care...

Chris..I posted a response to your question under my photo but your question and my response are no longer there. According to the stated rules "Images must be shot with assistance of a Gary Fong Lightsphere". Let me break it down for you..
A..the sunflare in the background is total Photoshop manipulation. If you use Photoshop you simple got to filter>render>lensflare. Simple little effect.
There is also the use of an off camera flash with the lightsphere, reflector disc and a Gary Fong Snoot here . The colors of course are all manipulated. As are the light effects coming from the back and I used a software program for that. I worked extremely hard on this photo when shooting as well as in post editing. You may call it Apocalyptic Mama or whatever you choose. I obeyed the rules and when the voting was supposed to have ended my photo was in the number one slot. I really don't appreciate your singling out my image. My daughter was the subject in the photo so it is very special to me.
Again..there was nothing stated in the rules that said we could not photoshop or manipulate images. I hope this clears things up for you.
