Confused About Novice Category???

I'm Very Confused About Why So Many Professional Looking Photos Are Entered Into This Category??

The Meaning Of Novice In The Dictionary:

(a person new to or inexperienced in a field or situation:)

These People Have A Good Understanding Of Photography, Composition, Lighting
& Editing And Are Making It Very Difficult For The Real Novices Trying Their Best To Get High Image Score And Win Awards

Many Of These People Have Been Awarded Best Photographer Of The Year .. So How Can They Be A Novice? Doesn't Make Sense To Me!!!

My Daughter Has A Pixoto Account, She Loves To Take Pictures And Submit Them To Novice Category Because She Is A Novice, But Really Just Can't Compete With Most Of The Photos Submitted In This Category.

I Do Think There Are Many Very Talented Photographers Just Trying To Get As Many Number 1 Awards As They Can In This Category, Who Would Probably Do Just As Well In More Appropriate Categories .. So They Should Leave This For The True Novices.

I agree. I think once you've been in Novice for one year and won a number of awards, you should not stay in Novice. Currently if you enter into any other category and score Top 5% (or it could be top 10%?) you are excluded from entering Novice- but there is nothing stopping a photog from just racking up #1 images in Novice over and over.
I think it's fair to give it one year (how else could someone get "best photographer of the year" as a Novice) but once you have gotten top awards every month of the year you should submit with the rest. (and ESPECIALLY if you place as a top photographer of the year)

Just as you can't enter novice once you have won something significant in regular areas, you should just as much not be allowed to enter there once you have won enough novice contests. What is enough? I don't know. Putting a time limit on it doesn't seem fair to those who may not be improving as fast as others, but certainly once you have proven you know what you are doing in novice (and I should think that might be a number of weekly wins at most!) you should be excluded from playing in there!

Everyone has to graduate sometime!

Hi Again,

Yesterday I Reported About 30 Photos From The Novice / All Subcategories / All Time Category For Being In The Wrong Category And They Are Still There.

They Have Clearly Been Taken By Experienced Photographers Who Have A Talent For Taking Excellent Photos And Have A Good Understanding Of Photography, Composition, Lighting & Editing etc.

There Were Too Many Photos For Me To Report In This Category That Should Not Be There.

Hi Phil,

I think there are photographers who believe they are novices simply because they are not Professional career photographers. There is no rule that they can not post there, they are only disqualified once they win in another category on the site.

I think, Sherry, that the suggestion is that there SHOULD be a rule that excludes them when they have proven that they are not beginners.

But that depends on whether the Pixoto Novices section is for Beginners or for Amateurs. There is a big difference between all these terms.

I consider myself an Amateur, because I am not a professional career photographer and don't make money from my photography. But I don't consider myself a Novice or Beginner, because it has been a hobby and passion for many years.

Maybe the intention of the 'Novice' label needs to be clearer for Phil so that the content and photographers who are permitted to play in there will seem fairer to him.

I believe another thought may be if only 'PURE' photos were allowed in the 'novice category!...That way, REAL 'novice photographers' wouldn't have to compete against PHOTOSHOPPED photographs, which OFTEN get a higher score...In that situation, then, real 'novices' can concentrate on composition and learning their camera settings!

[I also think more smilies should be added to your choices!!...]

:/ O.o >_< to name a few...But especially :/

Only fair would be if a person won 5% or better award in any category (that incudes novice, instagram, digital art) than novice category should be locked for that person.

In past we have vitniced many misuses of novice category, togs that had great photos and wouldn't post in any other category then novice and thus taking all awards and points from togs that are really novices and deserved them.

I deleted my pro account a while back because of so many issues, one being my images continually being removed by staff, and being forced to compete with the "pros" when I clearly was not able to do so, I come back months later and post some photos just to see what has changed if anything, not much has changed I guess, Novices with 300 Number 1 photos, mine was removed after 1#1, and still the problem with ridiculous voting, bad snap shots vs detailed photography. Bagus Metta 300, awards (and deserving) should give someone an indication that the guy is not a novice, say nothing of the #1's. It would be nice if they actually made this so you worked your way up to compete with the pro's, novice, non paid professional, and Pro's, you win a number 1, or 10 top 10's you move up.. pretty simple. If you cannot compete, the site is not very fun, so keep the novices working on perfecting their hobby, keep the pro's competing with pro's

I'm still new, but have read nearly everything I can find out how this site operate but I'm still confused regarding image scores, duels and novice categories.

I am most certainly a novice and I always tag my photos as such. It appears as though my photos are being included in image duels against photos that are NOT novices. I'm not whining and saying I think mine should win, I'm just very confused as to how novices are being scored.

I think I may be mixing questions here but based on my understanding, my photos have low image scores based on losing duels. They are then automatically paused because they "statistically will not reach the top ten percent". I had one image that won 9 out of 18 duels (50%) which was then paused as being too low. If it won 50% of the very few duels it was in, why would it stop at such a small comparison ?

My image with score of 251 is being compared to an image with a score of 650. Shouldn't my images be compared against other novices, or other images with low scores as well?

I really have read the "How image scoring works" at least ten times. Perhaps someone else who is also a novice could try to explain it to me in a different manner that is easier to understand? If so I would be very appreciative.

This is a great conversation that's separate from the main topic, so I created a new topic to continue the discussion. Please reference the new topic here: Scoring and duel question
