A new member should be able to create a new account on Pixoto without having to link to a Twitter or Facebook account.

We use Facebook and Twitter to help with voting fraud prevention. Twitter doesn't seem to be working very well for this so we will actually probably drop this as an option.

With Facebook we have a much better idea of whether a user a real person or not.

For reference we used to have huge problems with people creating large numbers of fake accounts to try to influence voting. Since we went to FB and TW registeration only we don't have that problem.

There are photographers switched to G+ who would never ever return to FB for privacy and other reasons including simply disliking FB. I am not one of them but I feel you block out those who's not on FB and it seems rather unfair.

We will definitely consider adding G+ and opening up to other types of user verification in the future. Facebook is just the easiest way to do that now.

That'd be great! I'm planning to join pixoto once G+ opens up.

This seems silly to me. There's gotta be a way to verify the users. I don't have Facebook or Twitter, so now I can't join.

Both facebook and twitter are free and easy to signup with. You do not need to use them for other purposes than Pixoto...

What is the meaning of having them then? Which REAL fraud protection just created for purpose of logging to somewhere FB account has? Isn't it the same as having new gmail? The real outcome is just to limit your users in their right of the free choice.

I do not want a facebook account - ever.
Nor do I ever want to join any social media site.
But I think Pixoto is a great idea, and want to become a member.
So, how can I sign up for Pixoto?

You cannot 'verify' the identity of your members even if they use Facebook. It's just a way of avoiding to say that Pixoto WON'T let you sign up unless you have Facebook.

Just like those events where they're "proud to ONLY accept Visa cards", making it impossible for the rest of the world to attend / pay for tickets / buy anything.

It's wrong. I challenge Pixoto to anything else but writing another excuse.

P.S. You still have to log on using Facebook, twitter, G+ or whatever to be able to post. What happened to freedom?

Iben - we used to allow people to signup with their email address and it caused significant abuse of the system. When we eliminated that method that abuse died off almost completely. Certain there are other, possibly better, ways of verifying someone's identity and we would like to add those methods in the future.

People can fake a Facebook account as well - use a fake name, birthdate, gender, the works.

So no, it doesn't help to sign up with Facebook.

Iben - they can - but they seem to be much much less likely too. We can also see the number of friends that a person has which is very difficult to fake.

So then what happens if I make a Facebook profile only for the sake of being accepted on Pixoto, but decide not to use this profile at all - you will see that I have 0 friends? Will Pixoto still accept me?

It doesn't make any logical sense and only strengthens the fact that Pixoto is supporting and endorsing Facebook by making it a condition for sign-up.

People that do not have Facebook should be allowed to make a Pixoto account.

I'm sure Facebook does a good job of verifying people's identity. Why can pixoto do it? That's just being lazy in my opinion.

Facebook does nothing. As I said before, anyone can have a 'fake' profile on Facebook.
