A huge drop in score.

Some pictures start off very well. They reach 575 to 630 or so score and then the score starts dropping to say something like 540 or lower. I have observed this trend for last threes weeks which is very weird. I had to resubmit them. Don't know where will they reach. What may be the reason?

I do not know by what criteria and some of my pictures have a good result, and on Fridays and Saturdays they lose a lot of points once the week scoring again get a good grade. This image:(http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...) had 714 points and now 660, it was minus 54th As it is in duels with a professional image when you exceed 650 points.

Photography had 714 points. On Saturday she was only 642 points and now has re-656th. Something stinks.

We made some changes recently (about 3 weeks ago) that allow scores to rise more rapidly than they used to. This was important in order to add more credibility to the daily awards. However a byproduct of this method is that they can also fall more rapidly as well.

Thanks! So we shouldn't be happy when our images score well, they might come down. :(

I would say don't get too excited if your image has under 80 votes. After 80 votes it shouldn't change that much... Unfortunately in this case we had to take the bad with the good.

Why would points drop at all? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Now pixoto belongs to PRO only if you are not PRO then your role is just like supporting the "PRO" photographers by voting. If you got 30-35 votes in that time a PRO will get around 55-60 votes.

That isn't actually true Nani. Sometimes I submit an image and if it does well right away, I get lots of duels. Other times I wait days for my image to reach the promised 100 duels. Often those duels don't significantly change my score (if it's an average image at say, 520, no matter how many duels it gets, it still hangs around at that level) A pro is guaranteed 100 duels, but not all in one day, and not always leading to higher scores. I had an image reach over 700, but then when it got those few more duels to bring it up to 100, it dropped back down into the 690s. Being a pro doesn't guarantee you'll win.

One of my images dropped 40 points!

It felt like everyone suddenly hated the image they'd loved in the days previous... it didn't feel cool, man.

I really think it's wrong for points to drop. Maybe the winning points should reduce in number as the photo reaches a certain level, but to loose points is indeed, demoralizing.

I'm with you. I checked my pics and you're right. Many of them drop. It's really demoralizing.

ImageScore on Pixoto is generally set to increase over time as we gain confidence with an image's quality. Any individual duel can result in an increase or a decrease in ImageScore. This has been true since we launched the site a year ago. About 80% of images that have scores above 600 after 100 duels fall off of the maximum at some point. 50% of images fall less than 5 points and the average image falls 7 points from their max. That said because we are working with larger numbers here there will always be outliers. 2% of images fall more than 25 points.

The following chart illustrates how imagescore progresses on average (imagescore is on the y-axis and # of duels is on the X-axis) and also gives examples of how three real images progressed.

You will note that while the average individual image falls 7 points from it's max the overall pattern is for imagescore to increase.

I realize that drops in ImageScore are unpleasant but unfortunately they are a fact of life on Pixoto.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for that, it explains how it happens but can you tell us why a photo has to drop in point? What is the point? I could understand that once it reaches say 700 points that the points gained for a win is reduced but why are they taken away?

Every duel can result in a increase or decrease in score. If Images could only go up then more votes would always be an advantage. We want to make sure that after 80 to 100 duels the number of duels an image has can not be correlated to score (i.e. an images should be just as likely to be on the top of the leaderboard with 100 duels as 300).

Does this make sense?

Jason. Thank you for the detailed explanation. It makes sense to me. It's like photos are stocks on the Dow. The stock may go up or down depending on market conditions. Points go up or down depending on votes but as the points go up the amount of points you can win or lose can go up or down depending on conditions such as what photo you are up against. But like the stock market, if it is a good stock or photo it will average out over time. Im not sure this is a good example but it makes sense to me:)

Why does the score on my photos drop? It seems to me that once a photo has earned points it would not loose them. What happens to cause this?

Is there anyways one can manipulate with the opponent score or for that matter increase or decrease score.....cause mine dropped from 670 on the afternoon of saturday and by the evening it was 644 thats a tremendous amount of decrease in 4 hrs....during the course of three days score kept on climbing with minimal minuses can anyone explain that.... its discouraging to see once leading and in hours lagging far behind..

Feh A'in look at the duel history, you probably lost duels during that time that caused the score to drop.

Ok, I understand that @ Sherry, I will keep on my battle, atleast it helps me in understanding likes and dislikes of my camera settings, though most photos posted by beginners are manipulated which cannot be described as true photos, moreover I have observed there are discrepancies while selecting perticular photo for specific categories which should be removed by the admin. to give a fair chance to those who abide by the rules....thanks

Feh A'in we are working hard to get miscategorized images into the right categories, but if you see any please report them using the Report button under duels and the Report button under the right bottom corner of the large sized view of the image, it will helps us find the images that are in the wrong categories or are in violation of the Contest Rules. Thank you
