WW2 film from 1990s—help please!

I saw this film on TV in (I think) the mid to late 1990s. It's set in WW2 England and a woman's army husband is posted overseas. They have 2 young children. While husband is away she really comes into her own (learns how to fix the car, for example) and thinks he will be proud of her, but when he returns he is very disparaging of her and wants everything to be as it was before. They end up separating. I only remember one specific scene—the car breaks down and she and the children start singing this song about "sand in the gas".

Can anyone remember what this is? I had thought the lead role was played by Niamh Cusak but I can't find it in any of her lists of films.

BTW I tried putting this in the much-hyped "What Is My Movie" and it suggested Sid and Nancy! Hopefully IMDB can do better. Grateful for any suggestions!
