Why bother correcting plot summaries?

...When the corrected summary appears only when the reader clicks to see the "full summary" and the original, painfully illiterate one remains the default?

Plot summaries are meant to be your own original work and must include a signature in some form.

Much like reviews; these are not official and are just a view expressed by a member of the community.

From the editing page for plot summaries:

Important: Plot summaries must be your own original work and you must not copy them from other sites, publications or other copyright sources.

Important: Please include a byline with every plot summary. This can be your real name, alias, or simply Anonymous. Using the same name each time will allow other users to see all your summaries in one place.

You pretty much are not expected to edit someone elses work, instead you are adding your own to the list of plot summaries available on IMDB

As an afterthought you could start a thread suggesting IMDB put in a like/dislike button of some kind for plot summaries so that the most liked rises to the top as default
