When will I be able to add an alternate name? That feature is currently down and has been for a long time.

when will I be able to add an alternate name? Right now I have two different names (since I got married) and they are two different people. Because IMDB is used so much by the industry now, this will have a very adverse effect on my ability to find work. I currently have no current script supervising credits on my main IMDB name. Please help!

Do you mean there are two different pages, both referring only to you and your work?

If so, they need to be merged.  Can you link to them or describe them?  Also, can you verify how you were credited on screen, if different from how the name page will be listed?

If I was listed as Joe Smith, then changed my name to Joe Jones, the pages can be merged, then the old credits, Joe Smith will be on the Joe Jones page with the attribute (as Joe Smith), which would create an automatic AKA (that type of AKA still functions correctly and is not affected by the moratorium on keyed in AKA's).

Are you Sherri Olson-Hewett and Sherri Olson?  And, if the latter got merged into the new page, are the credits on the old page in the name Sherri Olson or is there a mix of how they appeared on screen?

Yes. I have two pages of my work. My most recent credit has my married name and I want them to be combined. I thought that meant I needed to do an AKA but I will try what you said to do. (merge them) My original page is Sherri Olson (with all but one of my credits) and the latest project I did, I was credited as Sherri Olson-Hewett. Thanks so much!!!!

So, the instructions to merge are on the page You have two separate pages for the same person, how can this be fixed?

Note, you should preserve credits in the old name if credited on screen that way, by checking the box to preserve credits with "(as...)" attribute.

Post if you have any trouble.

Now to make this more confusing. I want to keep my maiden name as the main name on IMDB. But the credits with my married name, I want those to say (as Sherri Olson-Hewett).

Yes. That's me! :) They're mixed. Basically I have ALWAYS been Sherri Olson, but since I got married, I wanted to start being credited as Sherri Olson-Hewett. Will try to merge them. Thanks!

Ok. I think I did it. Posting a copy of my update request below. I guess we'll see in a few days if it works. Thanks all for your help!

Saying you want your IMDb Name Page to say "Sherri Olson" but want to start being credited "as Sherri Olson-Hewett), is confusing.  IMDb's policy is to list you in the database as you're more likely to be credited. It will make future work more likely to be credited to your page rather than creating a new page, more likely.

But, doing the merge, you should choose the least accurate.  So, to make your page say Sherri Olson, you'd select the other page and edit the name to say "Olson, Sherri." Then you'd tick the box to preserve the Sherri Olson-Hewett credits with the "(as...") attribute.

I'd advise you to to do it the normal way, to avoid confusion and avoid you, or others, to have to keep merging pages and fixing credits that went to a wrong page.

Note the policy stated here How can I change my name in the database? which says:

Our general rule is to list people in the database under their most recently and/or frequently credited stage or professional name.
Bold emphasis theirs not mine.

Thanks! Yeah, i did it this way because I actually don't plan to use the new name consistently. Just wanted to have one or two with the married name. (just to make my hubby feel good) But I've been working for long enough that I really need to mainly keep using my maiden name. (It's shorter, too!) Thanks again!

LOL...nice of you to think of him!  I bet he'll like it!  Keep in mind that while the update goes through, some data might disappear and re-appear.  So, don't panic.  Just ride it out and let it all fall back into place.

You're very welcome!

You don't need (or want) the Alternate Name section for this. That section is just used to add alternate names that are not used in credits (e.g. an aka of Robert Galbraith might be added to J.K. Rowling's page since she has written books under that name); alternative names used in credits are specified by adding an (as ...) attribute to the credit, which will automatically add an AKA Name.

What you need to do is merge the two Name pages pages.  I assume the two pates are for Sherri Olson and Sherri Olson-Hewett. If you plan to use the  hyphenated name as your business name from now on, you should merge the old name into the new one; otherwise, the new one into the old one. Since you have already used the new name, I assume you do intend to use it going forward and the following instructions reflect this.

Starting from the Sherri Olson page, click the Edit page button near the bottom.

Select Add correction from the dropdown menu beside Name Correction or Merge (the very first option.
Click the Continue button (at the bottom of the page).

Enter the new name (in the internal Surname, Givenname format) i.e. Olson-Hewett, Sherri
Leave the box beside Preserve previous name on existing credits. i.e. '(as Sherri Olson)' checked. As explained above, these attributes will show how your name was shown on the credits and will also create an AKA Name that will show up in searches
Enter the explanation. This is critical, as the Data Manager needs to know that there is a good reason to merge these pages. Something like:
I am Susan Olson-Hewitt, but also have credits under my maiden name of Susan Olson. I am merging the two pages.
Click Check these updates

You should now see a message beginning:
You are about to merge two separate name pages into one.
Are you sure you want to merge this person with Olson-Hewett, Sherri?
Since this is exactly what you want to do, check the box beside Warning understood, go ahead anyway.
Click Recheck these updates

The form background should now be green, and you can Submit these episodes.

The change should be done within a week, but might take longer. Allow up to three weeks before starting to worry. Note that some credits may disappear for a while during the merge, so again, don't worry if it happens.

Hopefully I did it right! Guess we'll see in a few days! This site is a great resource for the industry but can be such a pain! :) Thanks again everyone!
