What happened to the Compact View? Less is more sometimes! People don't always want to see all the information of the movie in a list. We can do that ourselves by looking up the movie page.
I do yearly lists of my favorite 30 movies of the year and change the rankings constantly. That was so easy to do with the drag and drop feature. Now I need to manually type in numbers for multiple movies just to change the rankings? I hate this so much.
Bottom line is now the Lists are just cluttered and hard to use. What use to be my favorite thing about the site is now infuriating. I am so disappointed with these changes and I know I'm not in the minority here. What were you guys thinking?

Elsewhere in this thread you'll read about people's discontent with losing the drag/drop method (including me), but you CAN move items in a list.

I've verified that Zero for Conduct (1933) does not appear is the search results if you enter the title Zero for Conduct. Zero for Conduct is a film short. Others have reported problems with the title search for title lists does not work for films shorts and TV episode titles.
If you enter the title ID (tt0024803) for Zero for Conduct, the title appears in the search.
The title ID appears to work for all titles. At least for the foreseeable future, use the title ID when the search function for a title list does not find a title.

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls055426815/ Was 59,600

I take it from your wording that the old view counts can't be restored en masse, only manually edited individually?

It is no longer possible to export another user's list. This is important for reviewing problems with potential candidates for polls when formatting problems occur.
The creation date for a list is no longer available. Knowing this is important to ensure that poll suggestions do not languish.

It seems they fixed both the abilities to export another's list and to view list creation dates (or at least timeframes). Do you agree?
You've been on this forum for a lot longer than I. Is this how IMDb usually handles communication on a new release: not acknowledging bug and suggestion reports (although your message on this topic was an exception), and no notification when the problem is fixed (again, with a couple of exceptions)?
IMDb has been pretty aggressive about making changes in recent weeks. I'm surprised they don't stop and improve what they release before the next shock and awe. Fortunately the other changes don't hit quite so close to where I live (on IMDb).

Generally, the IMDb staff responds to bug reports. The push back may well be more than the IMDb staff expected.

Disregard that. Colour formatting actually did stop working overnight. FFS. One step forward, one step back.
I use different colours for tags in the comments on my list. Sure, I was maybe only one of a hundred people in the entire known universe who has ever used that feature but it was working yesterday so the fact that it doesn't work now is a regression bug imo.

Hey, what happened to your line about wishing they'd stop italicizing our comments on titles? Surely they could do something else to distinguish our comments from info from the Db. Just the new placement under the poster would seem sufficient.

Agreed. I had a cute idea about an hour ago, and decided not to post it because I don't want IMDb to think all these broken things are just mildly annoying.
I really wonder what kind of beta testing they did before this release. Certainly they didn't get a very diverse cross-section of list users and/or maybe not enough time. Kind of amazing when you think how many users might spread bad opinions to their social media outlets, and chip away at the reputation of the site. What killed MySpace again?
Yikes, just googled that, and the top answer at
https://www.quora.com/Why-specifically-did-MySpace-fall-so-fast-and-so-far
is eerily relevant:
- The site is unusable
- They love advertisers more than they love users
- Why fix it if it's making money
Time to go watch my next non-gory 30s musical.

I don't mind at all. I'm actually enjoying this whole thread. It's rare that I get the chance to actually talk to other list-makers. I talk to other extreme film fans all the time due to the nature of my list. People contact me almost every week about that. But I never get the chance to hear what other people think about IMDb's list tools.
There are certainly parallels with MySpace. I knew the Amazon buy-out was a death knell for IMDb. I just continued on as usual and hoped for the best.
I had exactly the same thought. The >1000 item glitch (as we'll call it) smacks of them not bothering to test this particular use case. They could've consulted people like me who have massive, popular lists as well as people who make lots of different lists (i.e. enthusiasts of the technology itself). They would've received loads of useful feedback that they could've taken on board before making sweeping changes and then turning around and asking "is this okay, guys?". It's easier to engineer a system for your users than it is to assume what they want* and then try to backport and retrofit fixes when they inevitably complain. Also, hire some testers for the love of god. Like I said, they should be paying you.
*Edit: actually even this might be overly generous.

Re: compact mode. I still miss it despite Dan Dassow's genius revelation that we can modify the URL from a search to show any title list, not just our own, in the Advance Search's compact mode:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&view=simple&sort=release_date,asc&lists=ls020853190
Thing I miss: the fact that you could mouseover the comments box. A list that I'm working from now has notes about some of the films, which I don't see in the ATS version of compact, nor on the title page (of course). Plus, who wants to search for a bookmark every time you get to a page you want to compress.

Go into Advanced Title Search, http://www.imdb.com/search/title
Under Your Ratings select Restrict to Titles I've Seen.
On Display Options select Compact and 250 titles/page.
You'll get this url
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings&view=simp...
And as Col loves to point out, you can bookmark this url, or any you create in ATS.

Frankly, I've run into so many films with inflated/deflated ratings that seem like deliberate campaigns were launched, that I pay less attention to that number all the time. But I respect your desire for integrity: if it says it's sorting by ratings, it should do that.

the RSS feed for lists seems to be broken. I suspect this recent "upgrade" removed this functionality. Previously, this link (http://rss.imdb.com/user/ur81218372/watchlist?sort=date_added%2Cdesc&view=detail) would return an rss feed. Now it returns the normal html version of the watchlist.

I'm personally not going to update my list until the reordering is fixed. At the very least "fixed" in the sense that its behaviour is perceptibly deterministic. All this undefined behaviour is making me nervous. I'm worried that there's the potential for overwriting or accidental deletion, especially with these odd numbers appearing all over the place. The first time the "2 of 2 pages" glitch appeared, I was freaking out about the possibility of everything else having been lost somehow.

I don't know about the future of my list on IMDb but Letterboxd looks like a fine potential replacement for anyone who's interested.
Never mind. After further exploration, the community seems a bit too "millennial" for my liking. By which I mean they make me want to do terrible things to myself.
Any site where this is a top-rated review is not a site I want to be a part of:
doctor: you have two hours to liv—
me: [pushing dvd drive closed]
doctor: wait,
me: [clicks “commentary with the cast” ON]

Well, you could be part of the evolution of the site.
Since they offer to import list data from other sites, I tried a short file. It did NOT import the comments. It's certainly a timesaver to have the titles selected, but why they wouldn't also import the comments is beyond me.
The free version is very limited in functionality (no advanced search). Didn't find a trial option to see what the paid memberships do. Not enough information on each film (I mostly care about old films). As someone who pines for our old compact view, the poster tiles orientation doesn't appeal to me.
Yeah, I'll pass. The page on data importing mentioned a couple of other sites. But I'd rather invest my time here.

That's the major advantage of IMDb: whatever the corporate side does, they still have one damn good database, especially for people with niche interests. It would be hard for anyone else to compete on that basis. I think I've made my mind up that my choice is between continuing to work with IMDb and rolling my own solution. I'm lazy so if IMDb makes it comfortable to do the former, that's what I'll do. It all depends on the outcome of this thread.

Since the new look of Lists I am unable to add some persons to Lists because the search function in the edit List feature cant find them. This only seems to happen if I try to add/find porn actors/actresses and add them to a List.

This is a work-around until IMDb makes it possible to search for these people: use the name IDs to search for:
nm2990153 Jordan Kingsley
nm6786985 Jade Jantzen
nm9231872 Lux Lives
In general, you can use the person ID to add a person to a people list and the title ID to add a title to a title list. Name IDs are of the form nm1234567 and title IDs are of the form tt1234567.

I stumbled on the update to the original announcement below.
When you do such an edit, could you also do a comment or a reply echoing that update?
We who are following the thread do NOT receive notices for edits to prior posts.
Update Dec 8: Thanks for all the feedback; we're working our way through the issues.
- We have fixed the description display issues (&, +, -, line break issues)
We're currently working on:
- We've updated List export to include director, release date, and URL. We will add Rating back soon.
- Bringing back the view counter, re-enabling the ability to export other users' lists, and adding pagination to related lists.

As per Dan Dassow's earlier post, the sequence was:
For reference, these are the data fields exported from my "Your Ratings" list. Bolded and underlined fields are not currently exported for a title list.
- position
- const
- created
- modified
- description
- Title
- Title type
- Directors
- You rated
- IMDb Rating
- Runtime (mins)
- Year
- Genres
- Num. Votes
- Release Date (month/day/year)
- URL
It would seem reasonable that exporting a title list would include the same data fields as an export of a ratings page.

I wanted to collect all the bugs and suggestions we reported since the switch flipped on Dec 6. I'll put the suggestions in a second list as a comment to this one to keep them together.
If I omitted something, accept my apologies and let me know. I'm certain that although I just scanned through all 4 pages of posts, some posts didn't display unless I clicked a View More link midstream. I may have missed some that way.
I've included responses from IMDb officials when got something.
- missing 4 columns from export lists and checkins: directors, you rated, release date, url; added back dir, rel and url, but not in original sequence; working on adding ratings
- fixed: missing list of lists
- fixed: description display issues (&, +, -, line break issues)
- description display issues (&, +, -, line break issues) on Image list
- view count was removed; now it's back but vast quantity of counts are missing; will it show the "in last 3 days" or similar count?
- within Edit mode, Select list (to copy or move titles) doesn't include a Create new list option
- in Edit mode, Add a title doesn't find TV episodes or short films unless the title id is used
- in Edit mode, Add a title doesn't support using the full url
- in ATS and when sorting lists, IMDb rating order is no longer accurate: when titles have the same visible average, they are then sorted by popularity instead of further decimal places
- Related lists to a title is restricted to 100 lists; Col says we'll get full access back in early 2018
- description user link [link=ur###] gives wrong text and wrong link
- Edit mode, reordering a title in a list of over 1000 titles gives false feedback on refresh "1,301 - 2 of 2" at bottom of screen, 2 titles at top of screen
- Edit mode, reordering a title, leaving comma in position number gives NO change in order
- Edit mode, reordering all titles but one, the unaltered title does not retain its position
- Edit mode, adding title to last page of list longer than 1000 titles, falsely shows new item's position as 2; Karen replied 'looking into it'
- RSS watchlist feed reverted to HTML instead of XML.
- exporting another person's lists is gone; Karen says they're working on it
- the creation date for a list is gone; Karen says they're working on it
- text produced for company link is missing (just displays co code) [link=co###]
- display of non-Latin alphabet in descriptions has failed; now just string of &##; codes
- starmeter and date of birth gone from people lists
- people list, edit, add search doesn't find porn cast

- return drag/drop reordering to Edit mode
- add Refine features to Ratings list
- return the old compact view, esp. mouseover the description icon displaying description
- Edit mode: need Last Page link
- Edit mode: need page navigation and Done button on top and bottom of each page.
- Edit mode: need copy to, move to, delete and Save List Order on top and bottom of each page
- Edit mode, Add title: alternate titles appear; need titles that match the search; see how it's done on iPhone app
- Watchlist should include Refine option for On TV (and support all options that regular lists do)
- need method to change TV service provider for On TV accuracy
- return description text formatting previously supported (colors, etc.) https://www.imdb.com/activity/help/descriptionmarkup
- Edit mode: provide one-button delete title again
- List view: Option to show more than 100 titles per page
- Sort lists by description/comments entered

Ah. problem on my end.
Here it looks as though I can't edit either the reply (bug list) nor the comment (suggestion list), and I need to add to suggestion list; I'll do it here for now:
Suggestion 14. Edit mode, alter position, allow <enter> within position box to trigger Save List Order.

I miss one error in your list and that is that the title of the movies is not the same in the display mode as in the export file. In listing they are showing the local title (in my case the Swedish release name) but in the export file it is showing the original title. For me this is a big issue.

Bug 23. Export list, title should be the local version (per user settings), not the original version
more Bugs:
24: Edit mode, TV episode does not show name of series
25: Can't edit Watchlist with > 9,999 titles; get error 500
Additional Suggestions (I just had to find a View Previous link to find my original list in this thread of comments).
14. Edit mode, alter position, allow <enter> within position box to trigger Save List Order.
15. return to old compact view, with column for date rated
16. Add the Refine sort options to Edit mode to facilitate Move To selection and List Order changes.

- Predictable, deterministic, well-defined reordering behaviour. The >1000 film, "2 of 2 pages" and 2nd position bugs all need fixing.
- At least one way to move an item one position upwards that doesn't require any scrolling. This can be drag and drop or, as bderoes has suggested, a form submit event firing whenever the user presses enter inside a position textbox. The current solution of scrolling down to an item, changing its position number, scrolling all the way back up and then clicking a button to move an item up one place is not good enough.
- Fixed "Export CSV". It should export the same fields as before. And it should actually work. I'm still getting a ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_CONTENT_DISPOSITION, which sounds like "this is not a recognised file and HTTP response combination".
- Colour tags returned. These are very useful in complex lists that make extensive use of comments to give additional information about films. I can see absolutely no reason for their removal. I find it perplexing. Sure, as a feature, it's probably used by a fraction of a percent of all list-makers but the people who do use it are overwhelmingly the advanced and popular list-makers most likely to leave for another platform.
- List comments no longer italicised. There are other ways to demarcate text as "user content". All perma-italics does is make our comments look less presentable and preclude the use of italics for emphasis and for the grammatically correct citing of film titles.
- The film search from within list editor mode has been absolutely castrated: far fewer results and no subdivision into "exact", "substring" etc. I want it returned to how it was before.
- How does the new view counter work? Is it now counting all list views from an arbitrary date? If so, when? Is there a rolling window? I'm fine with modifying every list to start counting views from the same date but I want the total to be cumulative rather than rolling. From now on, our view counts should only ever increase.
- Formatting fixes were rolled out quickly and effectively. There's been no damage to my list's contents.
- Comments now feel central to lists (which is exactly what they are on my list). The separated and expanded comment area is the change I never knew I needed. The width is spot-on for readability while making comments feel like less of an afterthought.
- Finally - finally - links work properly in the main list description box.
- The whole UI on both the user and editor side just looks better to me now. There's no debating that the old UI was starting to feel very web 2.0. That's not inherently a bad thing, of course, and some people will prefer it but I rather like the new look.
- I love some of the minor touches like being able to see full comments in editor mode rather than a scrolling textarea.
- The ability to reorder my entire list from a single page (i.e. an option to display all items on one page). I've been promising people that I would reorder my list so that all films in a particular genre would end up on page 3. Given that I have 1300 items in total and the items I need to move are scattered at unknown locations throughout those 1300, finding and moving them all without a one-page view would just be a hellish experience.

In the meantime, do you have an iPhone or iPad? The list implementation on our iOS app is actually the best one -- Android, mobile web and the desktop web are playing catch-up with the power of iOS. One the advantages of the new changes is that they clear the path for the same powerful list experience on all platforms.
I have nearly 300 lists with a total of tens of thousands of items, including all my film diaries by year, which are essentially the original basis for IMDb; I do almost all my list management on my iPhone. Functionality includes drag & drop re-ordering over list entries, no matter what the length. The one thing (currently) missing is the ability to add notes to items, however, the plan is to make all list experiences equal in 2018 (and you can use the web to add/update notes; iOS displays them without edit options).

You reported the message ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_CONTENT_DISPOSITION when attempting an Export.
I got that yesterday, and determined it was because my List's name had a comma early enough to be included in .csv file name. When I removed the comma I was able to export.
I was also able to export someone else's list of almost 10,000 titles, so people should be able to Export large lists of their own now.
Curious: is your View count moving since they restored it? Mine are not popular enough to know if the counter is working yet.

Yeah, I figured out the presence of 3 (!!) commas in my list title was screwing me over. The thing is: I just don't want to change the name of my list on principle. It was exporting before with its existing title and it should be exporting now. Maybe I'll yield if it never gets fixed and I need a backup but right now, I'm going to have (perhaps misguided) faith in the IMDb team.

I had never really backed up my lists, and with all the sudden changes on this site (I pity the dedicated reviewers, and many other subsets of users in just the last month), that it was time. So I took out the comma and don't feel inclined to bring it back. Of course, once they restore the my_rating column, I'll want to backup a lot of them again.
I'm really amazed at how little the IMDb staff acknowledges bug reports, and that they don't report back when they've fixed stuff. The bug list is up to 26 items now, and 17 suggestions. I only know of 6 that have been touched, and mostly because I discovered it or other users reported success. Of course, I'd rather they work on fixing things than on telling us about them, but ...

I kept weekly backups of my list for a long time because I'm a cynic. I was half expecting the list feature to just disappear in the middle of the night. I'm shocked that they decided to "improve" it rather than remove it, frankly.
You're doing an excellent job of being IMDb's bug tracker. I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates it! I think we can take some limited solace in the fact that they do actually appear to be fixing things (seemingly at random) from your list. A status update from them would be nice but actions > words and all that!
I must lay flat on my back and not get annoyed according to my doctor so I shall remain zen on the list issue. Maybe when the crippling fatigue wears off they'll have magically fixed everything.
Happy to see you still here :)

Well, since I missed the idea of checking the comments section on your list (way, way far from the top; wouldn't it be nice if IMDb offered a Close option for the List's Description?), I give myself a C- at best for stalking.
I just left you a PM on FB, and hopefully turned on Message Notifications on my end. I'm a social media abstainer, but have a minimal FB acct.

If I wanted to do this today on a long list, I'd use the Refined list, tick the + in the corner of the poster to place the title in my WatchList, and transfer from the Watchlist to the destination. An extra step for sure, and I'd need to remember the first title added to Watchlist.
But I must confess that, except for the loss of drag/drop sorting, and needing navigation&other options at the bottom&top of the page, I like the new Edit mode a lot.. Seeing that I haven't rated the title yet is a great help, as is the title having an active link, and the comment box's flexible size. Perhaps the biggest benefit to me is the ability to reverse the sort order within Edit, so I can quickly access the titles just added to the end of the list.

Unfortunately, the Advanced Title Search option does not allow a title to be moved from one list to another. No checkboxes.

Unfortunately, the Advanced Title Search option does not allow a title to be moved from one list to another. No checkboxes. That is indeed a major limitation. The Advanced Title Search was never intended to interact directly with lists.

Moving or Copying to the Watchlist does NOT lose comment data. I just tried it now. And with our new Update, the Edit mode for Watchlist lets you edit or add comments.
Using the Flag on an ATS compact list or on a title page or a + on a poster is Adding, not moving or copying, and that indeed creates a comment-free entry in the Watchlist.
I don't use comments on all my lists, and you didn't mention that you had comments to preserve in your original post.
I agree that Edit mode needs the Sort and Refine features that we have outside of Edit. I did NOT intend to say the system is perfect as is.

Moving or Copying to the Watchlist does NOT lose comment data.I stand corrected, bderoes. I just did a test with one title (moving it from Library Hold to Watchlist, then back to Library Hold) and my comments moved along with it. I swear this didn't work yesterday! I appreciate your comment, as I probably would have given up and figured that function was lost forever.

I see that there have been recent changes to list edit page. And I am severely disappointed in seeing that still there is no option/way of displaying all the items on one page(while viewing or editing).
People at Imdb must understand that it becomes very difficult to manage the list when there are a total of hundreds of items in the list and only 100 items displaying on one page!
To know where to insert the item, or even just to view the whole list, one has to traverse through a lot of pages and do a lot of clicks and scrolling down.
I think Imdb has missed a great opportunity to fix this issue. I request to please provide this option. If you can't, the least you can do:-
- is to provide the button/click option, to traverse to next page at the starting/top of the page, because everytime one has to go to the next page, one has to first scroll all the way to the down! And/Or,
- provide the option to go/traverse to any page(first, second, third, fourth, etc.), on all of the pages - the way it is on Google Search pages.
Thanks.
