When I click the "Export this List" option on my ratings page it spins for a while then takes me to the D'oh! page stating it can't be displayed. I have submitted an error form, but no response. I have had this issue for the past 5 days. I do have a very large (17,000+) vote history. I wonder if this has something to do with the export failing.

I've had the "Export this List" application time out on occasion for large lists. For instance, when I tried to export Col Needham's rating list this morning, the process timed out three times before it finally worked.

I just tried the exported Col Needham's rating list (which has over 8300 entries) and it took around 165 seconds to create the comma separated file.

I would expect your list to take twice as long to execute. The search may time out before completing.

Me too, but I could usually get it to work. I've tried about 50+ times on three different browsers/machines over the past 5 days and the result is the same. Will not export.

Yep, sounds like the request is just timing out and I can't really think of a good solution. Your best bet is to just keep plugging away - perhaps try and get in at quiet times (usually before America wakes up or after they've gone to bed).

I've noticed that IMDb tends to be more responsive between 1 am and 3 am Pacific time.

As the last of the crazy west coasters give up their wild night out and collapse asleep. Living over the other side of the Pond I recall that back in the early days of the Web, you'd know when America started to arrive at their desks on the east coast as the popular sites would start to slow down. You'd want to get your heavy data usage over by lunch.

At >22K, I can't download my vote history anymore!
I even tried "1AM-3AM Pacific time" today
Can't IMDb increase the timeout time? This is ridiculous: it's just a few MBs

It may only be a few MBs but I don't believe it exists in a flat file ready for download, but needs to be built from a database query which would be the bit timing out as it tries to drag in all the necessary data and build the CSV file you need to download.

So is there hope IMDb can do something about it? I'm not the only one with the problem + it's been building up to this total denial for years

There are solutions, although they'd require IMDB to recode the back end. So don't hold your breath.

The simplest would be to build the file in steps of around 5k, so if a list is less than that you'd get a straight download, if it is 8k then you'd get a button saying you need to press "next" to finish building, at 13k you'd need to hit the button twice etc. It could then flush the CSV file once it has been downloaded.

There are other solutions, you might be able to grab the RSS of your ratings:

http://rss.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/ra...

Then covert that into CSV:

http://scooterlabs.com/hacks/rss2csv.php

Unfortunately:

* The ratings RSS returns a 404.

* There seems to be a cut-off with no pages (which is what would let you step through each page, convert it to CSV then import it into a spreadsheet), although pagination should work (I might just be doing it wrong): http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5005#se...

So a bit of a double whammy there. If we can fix the first point we might be able to address the second, but without it, it is pointless.

Oh a third solution: Create a Greasemonkey script that could strip out the information from the compact view of your ratings. I am unsure if it can also work through the pages or if you'd need to do this manually, but a Javascript whizz (or some Googling) could reveal how to do this. I'd guess you probably could do this.

You could use something like this as the basis for the script, as it takes page elements and exports it as CSV:

The only way I've been able to export my ratings is by making lists out of them which are about 2000 or less and exporting them. After export I can then merge them together. Very painful.

And none of them work.

And should we be looking for a work around? When it says "Export this List" one would expect it to do so.

They don't really owe anyone to fix it, do they. Maybe not enough negative feedback?

Well, IMDb is the website who managed to not implement a handful of new genres that were agreed on a decade ago, with the uers doing ALL of the work except a handful of database commands. They have the worst ccustomer service of any big website on the net.

Today, I was able to export my Watchlist, which has 8974 titles. However, I cannot consistently export lists much larger than 2,000 title, people, character or images.

Just now managed to export a small list <500 titles But any list 3000 or above including My Watchlist and My Ratings is impossible. This has been going on for over a year now and IMDB have done NOTHING to address the matter.

New computer, new internet connection and nothing improves. A list over 2000 just will not download. Slow Slow SLOW imdb server. Always timeout. No help from support. They don't even acknowledge there is a problem. We as users do all the work so they can generate cash from advertising but we get nothing, not even the ability to backup our own data.

Sadly, they did acknowledge the problem about a month ago and you're not going to like the answer:
