Hi there!

I am writing you today because I am having some difficulty using the "Adding a New Title" feature with "Star Wars:  An MTV Movie Special" (1997)...specifically, I am receiving the following error message):
This title has been rejected. You need to correct this title before it will be accepted.
  • Sub-type
My suspicion is that I am receiving the above error message due to either/both the "Star Wars" or the MTV component of the title.  The other 1997 Star Wars movie special that I wanted to add is "The Force Returns - Star Wars Trilogy:  Special Edition" (1997), but I suspect that title will generate similar error messages and I am running really low on energy about now.  The following are the two movie titles and their corresponding and meticulously recorded credit lists (which I am hoping to see added to IMDb's database).

“Star Wars:  An MTV Movie Special” (1997, Color, 22 min) [First aired Feb. 15, 1997]

Star Wars: An MTV Movie Special - Fairly amusing interviews with Fisher/Ford/Hamill.  Very random MTV type celebrities are asked about Star Wars.  Carmen Electra.  Gwen Stefani.  Green Day.

Sci-Fi Channel Special - “The Force Returns - Star Wars Trilogy:  Special Edition” (1997) [First aired Mar. 1, 1997]

Sci-Fi: The Force Returns - Ultra low-budget documentary.  The Sci-Fi Channel was still kind of in its infancy then, and this one is kind of amusingly ghetto.  More stock interviews from Making of the Special Edition sessions, and poorly-filmed stock from some convention somewhere.  Men dressed up as Princess Leia.  And hype, Jabba hype, Jabba hype!

Alan: I believe that the error you were getting:

This title has been rejected. You need to correct this title before it will be accepted.
  • Sub-type

refers to the section of the form where you have to choose one of these:
  •  TV-series
  •  TV mini-series
  •  TV movie
  •  TV special
  •  unaired TV pilot

Have you chosen "TV special"?

Thank you for your reply.  Here are the specific steps that I have taken and re-producably encountered the earlier described error...

From the "Adding a New Title" IMDb page <http://www.imdb.com/updates?update=title>

Step 1:
I entered the following...

Title
Star Wars:  An MTV Movie Special

Type
Made for TV (series/mini-series/special/TV movie)

Status
Released and screened/available to the public (or firm date set in relatively near future)

Year
1997

I am...
...none of the above

Step 2:
I click the "Check these updates" button.

Step 3:
A confirmation page loads with a green screen and "1 title ready to be added" displayed at the top.

Step 4:
I click on the "Submit these updates" button.

Step 5:
I get the red screen with the aforementioned error message...
This title has been rejected. You need to correct this title before it will be accepted.
  • Sub-type

Any further help is greatly appreciated.  And, I am not exactly sure how things work around here (if this area is ENTIRELY IMDb user supported or if there are paid or volunteer IMDb moderators).  Just to be clear, I am totally NOT expecting anyone (at least anyone short of an IMDb moderator/administrator) to enter in the information that I provided for the two additions I am having issue with. ;)

All the best! ;)

Alan: Thanks for your explanation. I was able to test what you said and reproduce your results.

Everything in Step 1 and Step 2 looks fine.

But it looks like there is a software bug in Step 3. The web site should not have displayed a green screen and "1 title ready to be added" yet in Step 3. Instead, the web site should have asked you to provide more information, namely the Sub-type (in this case, TV special).

And not only that, but you should have then been taken probably to another screen in which you were asked to confirm that you were not submitting something with a similar title. And after that, you should have been taken to another screen in which you would have been required to supply a release date for the special, as well as a selection of other information (such as country of origin, language, genre, color/black & white, director, production company, distributor, and major cast and crew credits). The software shouldn't display the green screen and "ready to be added" until you submit the additional data. Nor should you be given a "submit these updates" button at Step 3 -- you should see "re-check these updates" until you have submitted enough data to qualify the title for listing, and only then should a "submit these updates" button appear.

This must be a bug that just started very recently, like in the last day or so, because I haven't seen it before.

Hopefully an IMDb staffer will see this thread and comment, or maybe there will be other similar threads if this problem is widespread.

By the way, there are paid IMDb staffers who participate on this Get Satisfaction board, whom you will recognize when you see their "Official Rep" or "Employee" designation. But typically the first response to a thread comes from a regular user. The staff is supposed to intervene on the tough problems that regular users can't resolve. This would be one of those problems.

So for now, I would recommend waiting until we get a response, or try the submission again tomorrow and see if you get a different result (like what I described above). The bug could be fixed without an announcement being made.

Hi Alan.

It appears this error was a transient thing. Gromit has very helpfully confirmed (via http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/flat/224421623) that it is no longer an issue.

Please try again submitting your title, it should be fine now.
