Titles without genre

I've noticed that there are over 70,000 movies without genre.
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&genres=%21action,%21adventure,%21animation...
Why isn't the staff working on completing the information?
It's not like it's just a few titles.
Cheers

Data on IMDb is contributed by users like you and me. "Staff" doesn't have the information to add the genre of a title, unless the staff member happens to have seen the title.

There are a LOT of un-released titles on your search. Others are likely Lost films. Restricting to titles that have at least 5 votes reduces the number to 10,735.
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&num_votes=5,&!genres=action,adventure,animation,biography,comedy,crime,documentary,drama,family,fantasy,film-noir,game-show,history,horror,music,musical,mystery,news,reality-tv,romance,sci-fi,sport,talk-show,thriller,war,western&sort=num_votes,desc&count=250

Perhaps this is a good search to add to the Contributor Zone > Data Research list:

https://contribute.imdb.com/czone

Notice that staff doesn't automatically remove the Short designation when runtime exceeds 46 minutes. I'll bet they want someone with access to the title to confirm the runtime is not the error.

It should do.

There is a thread about the feature here:

Why aren't there videogames on that page?

They said in the old thread that they took video games out of the running time tab. Maybe they also removed them from the other tabs? But I don't know.

Tip for the staff regarding this https://contribute.imdb.com/czone

1. Add videogames to everything except Running time
2. Add a tally to every section so we can see there's actually movement there

There are also titles (non-fictional also) where none of the genres really fit. Probably not that common, but it can happen.

( Not saying that all these 70,000 movies are like that, though.)

M J, Eboy makes a very good point. There are quite some titles that can't have a genre assigned because their genre isn't listed in IMDb yet. An example would be a lot of softcore flicks. They shouldn't have the Adult keyword attached to them, but a lot of them probably also shouldn't have Drama or whatnot attached to them.

Can we see the genre 'Softcore'  added somewhere in the near future?

M J: In 2010, the IMDb staff approved five new genres, including one called "Erotica" which would cover many softcore films. However, those new genres have not yet been implemented for some reason.

If you want to encourage the implementation of the new genres (the others are Awards Show, Experimental, Lifestyle, and Soap Opera), please vote in support of that idea in the thread at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/implementation_of_new_genres

Hi M J -

Due to limited staff and other priorities, we are not actively filling in the missing genre gaps for the titles you referenced without genres.   We do hope to address and update our current Genre list and definitions in the future, however, I cannot confirm a timeframe.

Of course, if the new genres would arrive, contributors could fill in a lot of the gaps...
