Title Change

Dear IMDb Team!

I need to change the name of my short film from The Freelancer (2019) to Psychosis (2019), however I have received the following message three times...the last time was six weeks ago:

"ReasonDuplicate/We were unable to approve this contribution./The item you have submitted is exactly the same as a submission that you have already entered, which is still pending review by our staff."

It wasn't a duplicate the first time, even if it was on the subsequent two times. If there's a mistake, please can you highlight what it is? And if it's correct and still pending after seven weeks, please can you specify when it might be approved?

The original name was a placeholder only, for the benefit of the cast and crew screening and Vimeo access. As an independent filmmaker the correct representation of my film on IMDb is critical for marketing and promotion, so it would be greatly appreciated if this change could be fulfilled.

I include the three 18-digit ID's for my submissions as below, as well as a screen shot from the Vimeo link of the film's updated title:

#200303-130440-405000

#200304-152156-940000

#200310-151803-789000

Many thanks, Steve

Hi Steve -

Unfortunately, when the title correction was reviewed by our editors the wrong "Duplicate" reason was selected.

I reviewed the title and can see that "Psychosis" is currently listed as a New Title: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10117376/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_ql_dt_2

We will need to retain the original title from when the title was first screened, so if the title first screened under the name "The Freelancer" we will need to retain that primary title listing and the new title ("Psychosis") will need to remain listed as an Alternate title.

Cheers!

Many thanks for your reply and clarification, Michelle.

Not to sound ungrateful, but I do find it baffling that IMDb doesn't allow you to change the title of your film...when even human beings can legally change their own names! If the company is immovable on this point, is there a way to have a warning message come up before you submit your film (stating that the title will be unchangeable)...or better still have the option for a placeholder name to be used upon initial submission?

For the record, I find IMDb to be a terrific resource and I'm very grateful for all the work that goes on to maintain and support it.

Best regards, Steve

Hi Steve -

I appreciate the feedback.  We don;t display a Warning in the title submission form because often times titles are submitted to us under a "working title" and we do allow for title corrections when the title has changed prior to release.  Our policy is that we will retain the working title as an Alternate title listing on the title page, but the primary title will be the title of the film when it was first released.

Ideally, we are aiming to document the primary title when the film was first screened and this is the title that we display on the site.  Under the Release Dates section of the title page is where we will allow the AKA titles to be listed for reference, this section includes new titles, working titles, foreign language titles, etc.

I hope this helps clarify our stance!

Many thanks for taking the time to reply...and thank you for the information regarding the 'working title', I will use that where appropriate in future.

Best regards, Steve

Michelle, I'm having the same issue. I've put in a request multiple times to change the title of my short film. IMDB has denied it saying it's a repeat. The original request was in January 2020. Here is the submission number: 200120-034715-615000

Thanks
