Ralph Bakshi is a living legend in the animation world, being among the first to introduce mature content and true independent spirit into animated features, as well as a pioneer of rotoscope technology. His films covered a broad range of genres, source material, and controversial topics. Which of his feature films is your favorite?

hey galen...

what a great idea...and what a great selection of films that i'm sure alot of people have never seen before...

the obvious choice is probably his rotoscoping of 'the lord of the rings', and that too will get my vote...after the brilliant book series and before the famous trilogy, in between all we had were the two rankin-bass tv productions of 'rings' and 'hobbit' (which were still cool)...but this was amazing...saw it in the theatre multiple times...even owned the beautiful double l.p. score on picture disc vinyl...

sadly...it was only the first half and he never got around to making the second part...but somehow that didn't matter...

and here ya' also have 'fritz the cat' (the first x-rated animated movie which caused a major scandal in its day), and 'american pop', 'hey good lookin', 'wizards', 'fire and ice'...even 'cool world' (featuring a young brad pitt) which i forgot was bakshi...

lots of great and unique stuff...well done...

Hey rocky-o, so glad you dig it, and I totally share your sentiments. His films covered such a variety of ground (often among the first to do so), while still remaining true to his unique voice and world view. Even Cool World is undeniably Bakshi, though he has basically forsaken it at this point. Remarkably and sadly, he hasn't maintained the wide recognition he so deserves. Most people will recognize at least one of his films, but may not know to attribute it to him. I hope this list introduces more to him or a film they might have missed.
