Been a member for well over a decade, and have watched greed take its toll on this site over the years. However, now it is reaching ridiculous proportions. It isn't bad enough that every page is within a movie or TV show advertisement, but now a video starts playing on every page, that I have to disengage to get rid of, and even then, I never get completely rid of it.

As far as I am concerned, I do not face this issue (and I think I would react the same way).

Hi all,
We use a cookie-based system to strictly limit the number of ads that are displayed to users during the same session. Make sure that your browser is configured to accept cookies, which are used to detect whether you've already been shown a particular ad. If you get the same ad whenever you open a new page or click on a link, enabling cookies and restarting your browser should take care of the problem.
For more information on our ads, please see:

Steve, that's very nice, and I'm sure Col appreciates your loyalty. We know all about cookies, and computers. After 13 years on this site every day, (editing, contributing. reading), you kind of get a sense of what is going on. The advertising is out of control Steve. Before this last wave of devastation to the site, (selling every inch of space and running forced videos at the top of pages, as well as just above the cast of the movie you are "trying to read about") the ads were all on the right side of the page.
We could live with that (kind of), but now it is a disgrace, and a blatant display of greed. The site should exist on IMDbPro as it was originally designed to. However, little by little the ads have taken over the site. It is now "an advertising venue". It's golden years are behind it. If it gets any worse (I don't see how it can), the viewing numbers will drop, and once the fall begins, there's no stopping it. I love the site. Perhaps dropping the price of PRO to 1/3 of what it is, could inspire thousands more to join, including myself. That will help eliminate this gap that's opened where the site is selling its soul to the highest bidder. Good luck.

Hi, Jock LeStank. As you may or may not have noticed, Steve is an employee of IMDb, so loyalty to the CEO is a given and quite frankly requisite. Even though he has not marked his reply as an official response (causing it to appear toward the top of this conversation), the reply effectively is such.

As I mention in my reply to him that he is a loyal employee, I think I covered that base. Actually, if you take his advice, when you arrive back at IMDb, the little video that plays automatically when you scroll past it, is locked in the position you last left it. That little video is a royal pain, because even if it isn't playing, the screen is opened an frozen in the spot you last left it.
I use Firefox which gives me an enormous variety of options in dealing with tracking cookies, data storage, etc. I choose to have my cookies erased automatically when I close the browser for the day, and I also clear the data at shut off, to help with computer speed on my next restart. I won't bore you with all the little adjustments I've made to my browser. However, this morning when I visited the site it was a different place. I'm not implying that this thread had "anything" to do with it, but two things I hate, "so far today" have disappeared.
The most annoying of all of the site's advertising is the forced "monster sized" video that opens each page at the top. So, when you click on a flick to see its rating, instead of that rating area being visible, it is entirely covered over with a promotion for some new movie coming soon to a theater near you, or some Prime promotion etc. You can X out of it, but it will murder you until you find that escape X button. That may be the most annoying advertising I have ever seen on any site in my computer life, which spans decades.
The second most annoying is the entire page surrounding the now "shrunk version" of the contents page. At least that one isn't moving, so you can try and blank it out of your mind when possible. lol. Today, that is a tiny ad on the top for a Prime show: "Ordeal by Innocence". I can live with that. It isn't 60 colors, and once you've read it, it doesn't haunt you during your entire visit there. If only all days were like today. Thanks for your reply.

Last comment: I noticed this morning that if I sign-in to the site (which I usually don't unless I am contributing, or rating a movie), the monster sized video that starts on the top of the page does not re-engage once I collapse it. It doesn't follow me around page to page. That is good news. I am concerned for "my favorite site" (IMDb), that someone new may be blown right off the page from fear... lol, however, us veterans are off the hook once we collapse the monster. It is literally a monster today.... definitely some monsters in "World WarCraft" :-)
I want to close this thread out with my assurance to my friends at IMDb, that my intentions here were for the good of the site, in hopes of preserving the place I spend most of my time on when I'm on line. My life, and many others lives who love the site, would be severely altered if anything was to bring the site down. My motivations here were to remind those in charge that everything has a saturation point, and to respect that fact when thinking about expanding advertising.
I want to thank Steve from staff for his reply, and everyone else that showed up in support of advertising awareness. As far as I'm concerned, this thread is closed.

Last couple of days, the site is completely out of control again. What a shame. Today the entire site is a cartoon of a Netflix show called MANIC. Perhaps it's the same MANIC in charge if advertising. .

Sorry, the colors are so blinding, I had to squint, and then realized it
is MANIAC not manic. That makes much more sense. There is a Maniac that
has the first and last word in approving what advertising the site
displays. If the cartoon wasn't big and ugly enough, the "SWOOP" is
back, slamming down your page from the top, like a Turkey buzzard. What a
disgrace.

You're right Jeorj Euler, and it would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Yes, a blitz in tasteless advertising is upon us. I can't deal with it. I think I will halt my contributions completely for a while, and log off for a month or two, and see if the site comes back to its senses. If not, I'll be spending very little time there, and will only use the site to look up facts of interest to me about a particular project. Be well my friend.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled New IMDB website layout.
The new layout of IMDB is truly horrible. You have stuffed advertising into every usable corner of your site - it's not about movies anymore, it's about ad revenue. Good bye, IMDB. Done with you.

It sounds like you have a defective ad blocker or are blocking cookies from IMDb which actual limit the amount of advertising which you see, as explained in the link above.
If this is not the case, please upload screenshots showing examples and we can investigate. As noted above:
IMDbPro offers an ad free experience and we now offer both iOS and Android IMDbPro apps, please see https://help.imdb.com/article/imdbpro/your-account/how-can-i-join-imdbpro/GDBR9HJWYWLEQK7K

We obviously do not wish to annoy or alienate our users. Our research has shown that compared to most other popular sites, the ad load on IMDb is lower, particularly when you take into account that the majority of our advertising is for other movies and shows, which should be of more general interest to our customers, and therefore feel less like true ads and more like relevant recommendations for things to watch.

I think that is a bit harsh. This site has been fantastic to me for over a decade. I think we just need to let those in charge realize what they're doing, and the long term threat of extinction, or a great drop in popularity is at stake. I have faith that Col will see the light if enough of us bitch loud enough. Yes, it is true, that if the site doesn't clean up the greed eventually, many of its long term contributors will wander off, and if things don't improve, I may also look for another hangout. I hope it doesn't come to that. I really hope it doesn't come to that. However, I am on an indefinite vacation from contributing until the insanity ends.

The thing is, people who have complaints do not have quite have the same complaints about the same things. The problems with the site, the apps and the bulk interface are various enough that prioritizing solutions would almost be completely arbitrary.

Yes. However, this page is strictly focusing on the overwhelming advertising. All sites have issues, and if those in power have their ears open, all problems can be dealt with and worked out to make most users happy. This problem with the advertising takes the fun out of going to a movie page and looking up whatever info I'm looking for. I scream at the screen when I'm about to click on a tab, and the monster from above ("The Swoop") causes me to have to find the collapse tab, or X out, which has been cleverly changing, as if to irritate us more.
The site, other than the advertising is far from perfect I agree. But, I won't even care about all the other issues as long as this overwhelming, intrusive, ridiculous, absurd, and greed induced advertising is under control. It's not just the swoop. The movie pages are now surrounded by promotions of shows that I did not go there to investigate. If all the ads were put back on the right side of the page, and the pages were enlarged back to their former glory, and projected as the center of the subject matter I came to see, then I would care again about the other problems you mentioned. For now, I'm on IMDb vacation.

Watched a nutty movie last night called: "Guns, Girls, and Gambling". I'm a sucker for a pretty face, and the female lead was Helena Mattsson. I was knocked almost unconscious from her looks. When I recovered, (this morning) I had to see who she was, so, where else than IMDb. I didn't log in, but when I went to the movie's page, it was like the old days. All the ads were on the right side of the page, no "swoop", and nothing surrounding the page. Don't know how long that will last, but for right now my vacation is over. Can't believe, being the "model looking chick lover" I am, and being in the industry, how Helena Mattsson snuck by me all these years. She looks like Charlize Theron wishes she looked. lol.
Anyway, I noticed Col's reply here as well, and though I may not agree with his assessment of his site's advertising compared to others, it was nice to see we got his attention, and for the moment, his actions. Col has a habit of "manning-up" to a situation when the shit hits the fan. I have always admired him for that.
Note to Col: Thanks for coming by Col. Perhaps, if we use your assessment of the facts, and agree that overall IMDb has less ads than most sites, then consider the fact that maybe it's not the number of ads that is the problem, but rather the "intrusive", and "invasive" nature of them.

Looks like Susan Dey, and Miss Harmon. You've proved you are as old as I am. lol.
And, that would be a big NO. I wouldn't mind all the foxes in Hollyweird buying all the ad space at all, but no "swoop", and no cartoon pages surrounding the target page.
Usually, the prettier they are, the worst of an actress they are. Not so with Helena, however, she has never had the lead in a decent movie. Too pretty is worse than no talent. One exception to that rule however, is Britt Robertson. Cute as hell, and more talent than her little body should be able to absorb. Thanks for the levity. I was trying to do that myself earlier. :-)

Welcome back, the ADS were your ticket out
Welcome back, to that same old place that you laughed about
Well the ADS have all changed since you hung around
But those ADS have remained as they've popped around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
(Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(Back here where we need ya)
Yeah we tease him a lot 'cause we got him on the spot

Spoke too soon. Well, there are two shows I will NEVER watch in this lifetime: "Maniac", and "The Good Doctor". BRING THEM ON IMDb! I'll just keep adding them to my list.
You know who the big loser is here?? "The Advertiser". Your viewers are going to get so cross-eyed at these forced ads, they'll take it out on the shows.
'Roses are Red, Daisy's are plain, you'd have the number one site if you had half a brain'. lol. Oh well... we tried.

Was just strolling around the site getting murdered with Disney swooping commercials, when I decided to make an edit. When I was done I was asked if I'd like to volunteer to answer some questions to help others on the site. After choosing my categories and proceeding on to the 1st question, I was swooped down by another Disney commercial. I quickly raced to the X out, and thought to myself: "IDIOTS". I knew that couldn't happen twice in a row while I was contributing....however it did.

I was done editing a biography (undisturbed by ads while editing), and when I submitted the changes, a page came up asking me if I wanted to help others on the site. It was during that procedure of helping others that I was slammed with Disney swoop ads. (impossible to complete even one question). Even Forest Gump would have assumed that the crew wouldn't ask him for any shrimp while he was helping to clean the boat. I use Firefox. I have all ad blockers activated. This is the only site I ever see an ad. Putin must have delivered Trump the ad invader software through Giuliani, and somehow it leaked to Amazon through the Clinton's server.

You are a dedicated IMDber Jeorj, however, we all know that Disney doesn't control where their ads are allowed to show up. Amazon does. I'm sure the swoop ads were left to explode into the site's help area for its contributors by error. I just brought the fact to light.
You should get a job in DC working for a spin factory. You have an answer for everything, and anything anyone can bitch about, even if it means spinning the subject onto another issue or fact. It's very amusing. :-) Like a "movie goers version" of Kellyanne Conway. lol.

We all know? I don't know that. What I do know is that hackers can exploit "errors" or rather holes in systems.

What would be the motivation? Disney hired Wiki Leaks to hack Amazon and annoy its users. :-)
The logical conclusion is the title of my thread? No, not that either. To error is human, and this site is still controlled by that species. The last thing the IMBd staff wanted, was a 47 year veteran of this industry that decided to donate his time to help answer questions related to the industry, to ultimately be interrupted by massive swooping Disney ads. I was just exposing a crack in the foundation. Thanks for your replies as usual.

The motivation is to put as many advertisements anywhere and everywhere humanly possible, without really caring about how annoying it might be to people who wind up seeing it when they do not want to see it. The advertiser will be adamant at making every attempt to get the advertised article to be on your mind, or the subconscience at the very least. That is the goal. Every big company already has its own staff of hackers, so it does not need to outsource, but that is not to suggest that it would not simply buy information offered to them by outsiders.

It wouldn't have to be "while" or during. Sometimes ambitious people sit on exploits a long time before using them, or have an implementation design for long enough to simply forget that an exploit is even involved in the implementation.

Hey Ed, nice to see you. Sorry I don't have time to play "What's my Number", If you're looking for a deciphering expert, you've asked the wrong guy. Math is my weakest subject. Now times two with your condescending remarks.
Keep comments like that in your head.
I do. Are you admitting that you cannot control your self.
Are you labeling me something?
Are you not capable of restraint?
I know that I cannot help but point out these facts when they present themselves.
I NEVER make politically based comments........EVER.
It is inappropriate.
My restraint becomes unleashed when any person cannot control theirs and be civil.
Please don't reply with another snide remark.

Been reading this, and I'm really disappointed. It doesn't take a Dick Tracy to see this thread started out with good intentions, but seems to have gone down the path to Grandma's house. It should be terminated for the following reasons:
The members with all the history of making posts here are out of control, and truly have no restraint here, or anywhere else on the boards I've seen their posts.
The Ed fellow simply has no way of hiding his neurotic personality by bad mouthing the Jock guy who never said a bad thing about anyone. Even in Ed's first warning, he doesn't even end the sentence with 'Please'. Very unprofessional, and emotionally motivated.
The Jeorj fellow just answers questions as if he is just trying to show how smart he is with absolutely no basis in fact associated with his answers. He should 'get a life'.
The Troll seems to be having the most fun, however he too has an agenda: He doesn't like the Ed guy.
I think the originator of the thread is the most interesting, and always throws a bit of humor in with his comments. Even so, I think this thread is history, and no further worthwhile info or relevance is to be gained by allowing it to continue.
I'll alert the Chief, Jimmy, and Lois to pass on this thread. Over and out: DICK

I find myself not going to the site unless I need to research something extremely important to me, because a visit there costs me more data from my10 gig a month limit, than a visit to a news site with pages of reading available, and it's "my Choice" whether or nor not I view the video they offer me.
Here, it is shoved down my throat as I scramble to find the collapse button, which now seems to be on a predetermined timer, so I am forced to lose data no matter how much effort there is from me to stop it.
I guess Col has lost control of his site. Really too bad..
