I like how most of the other television series use existing songs.
By the way, I really like the way that Call the Midwife (2012– ) uses music from the 1950s and 1960s.

I'd say that the power of properly written or chosen theme song is that it should not wear off with time. I never quite got tired with "M*A*S*H" instrumental rendition of "Suicide is Painless", "How Soon is Now" in "Charmed" or "The Angry Video Game Nerd" song (although in the latter case the song often uses different versions).
I only remember one case close to that and that was my unfortunate idea of using "Dexter" theme as an alarm clock. Turns out while waking up to it seems like a nice idea from an opening which sees character waking up and going to work... It is actually impossible to time yourself to that theme in my case. :)
