February 5 of 1919 marks the establishment of United Artists, a movie company that changed history becoming the first one meant to give actors control over their own interests.

Founded by Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and D.W. Griffith, the studio became mainly known as a distributor, and while it was sold and restructured many times, it still lives today as part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of United Artists, we have this poll.

Which is the most important United Artists movie?

First 25 years list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls041292029/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/Lu0Oyf56_Gc/

Second 25 years list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls041292178/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/bjmFxHlJyK0/

Third 25 years list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls041292230/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/PKtxYsWAmlo/

Last 25 years list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls041292908/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/QAjtuUWFhV0/

I tried to add at least one movie per year, that meant each period had 10 places to add aditional films in their most importatn years.
In some rare cases there are empty years where there wasn't a particular great movie and where there was a chance to add more options in particullary great years.

Unfortunately there has not been an United Artists films since 2016, hopefully their 100th anniversary will help the brand to reborn.

Suggestions about changes in the lists are welcomed.

Pencho: From the poll for the third 25 years, please remove Back to the Future Part II. That was a Universal Pictures release, and UA had no connection with it other than licensing the use of a film clip from another movie.

Thanks for the warning, it has been deleted and replaced with Apocalypse Now which somehow I missed in the first check I made of their films.

Rope (1948) and A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) appear to be Warner Bros. films whose rights were later sold. Are you sure you want to include them?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040746/...
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044081/...

Similarly, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) was originally MGM.

Sorry for the delay, I had missed your message.

Indeed, the three films were distributed by United Artists but at a later date than the original release.

I'm replacing Rope for Red River (both 1948)
2001 for The Party (both 1968)
A Streetcar Named Desire for Elmer Gantry (Both Academy Award nominees since 1951 is already covered by Th African Queen.

What a great poll! Or, actually, a great series of polls. : ) I love this one and there are so many great films; my vote would probably go to 'City Lights' or maybe 'Modern Times.'

May I suggest one tiny edit in the intro? ('below in bold: 'just added a comma after "history")

February 5 of 1919 marks the establishment of United Artists, a movie company that changed history, becoming the first one meant to give actors control over their own interests.

I recently started to work on some polls about independent films by decade and though the polls don't start until the '50s, I still read a lot about the fifty or so years before that so I read a good bit about United Artists. I can't imagine cinematic history, as well as cinema today, without United Artists. Your series of polls is such a great homage.

Thanks Ruby, I wasn't home during the weekend and couldn't make the changes before part I went live, but I'll made them for the rest and I'll repush the first part as soon as the rest of the polls go live in order to have backlinks between them.

This was actually a poll idea I had in 2012, when both Universal and Paramount celebrated their 100th anniversary. I made the suggestions but there was a big problem, they came during the dark ages without polls, and since that day I had been waiting for the opportunity to do this with a historical studio, I finally got the chance here.

That's great that you're finally able to do the polls. "Dark ages without polls" cracked me up, lol. It does feel that way, though: I can't imagine no IMDb polls!

Looks like Life Itself (2014) is not a UA release. And that Japanese film seems questionable and could be replaced by a better known, older film.

Google searching Life Itself and United Artists brought up this bit from Ebert's book: an interview with Martin Scorsese where he talks about avoiding certain films because they would remind him of his ex-wife, Isabella Rossellini:

You are right about Life Itself. I was using IMDbpro as a source, but as it was the case with Back to the Future, it is only listed in the company filmography due to additional footage.

This last part of the poll was a little troublesome as United Artists has practically stopped distributing movies and there is a significant drop in quality compared to the three previous editions. Removing Life Itself leaves us with no 2014 movie.

I'm replacing Life Itself with The Thomas Crown Affair, the most popular movie from this 25 years not already on the poll.

The Japanese movie was far from being a first option, but the original intention was to have at least one picture per year, and that one was the only they distributed in 2013. Like it or not it is the way the company has gone and as a poll reflecting their history I decided to respect it. I wasn't glad to add both Hot Tube Time Machine movies either.

I just wonder if you can trust the information about the Japanese title. Not everything in IMDb is true.

I've been further looking into the matter. The IMDb claims United Artists distributed the film in Beverly Hills, but has no release date outside Japan. I also found the whole film in YouTube and, while it is a Japanese copy so it wouldn't have the UA logo, there is no other source about the status of this movie.
While it could have been distributed it could be wrong data, so I'll change it even if it is sad to see so little recent movies.

I am replacing it with Osama, which seems to be the most acclaimed film from the ones that remain available as it won a Golden Globe.
