Live Poll: BAFTA Winners the Oscar Passed On

While Award ceremonies usually nominate and reward the same films, this ain't always the case.

There has been several times in history, specially in the early years when the British Academy was more likely to pay attention to movies beyond Hollywood, when the BAFTA winner for best film was not even in contention for the best picture Academy Award.

Which of these BAFTA winners deserved a Best Picture Oscar nomination the most?

Bicycle Thieves

La Ronde

The Sound Barrier

Forbidden Games

The Wages of Fear

Richard III

Gervaise

Ballad of a Soldier

Sunday, Bloody Sunday

La Nuit Americaine

Lacombe Lucien

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Educating Rita

The Purple Rose of Cairo

Jean de Florette

The Commitments

My vote:
Richard III (1955) - This is probably the definitive version of Richard III.

Second choice:
Educating Rita (1983)

This is interesting. I wasn't aware those foreign-language titles had won Best Film. I guess BAFTA changed their tune a bit over the years. Now I think their choices are too similar to the Oscars', and some in the UK feel that they underappreciate British filmmakers.

Neither was I. It was indeed interesting as I was researching to find out about all this past winners, some of them great films, and I was also surprised to see that, among them, there were some films from the US that apparently the British liked more.

Indeed not only the BAFTA's but pretty much every award is too similar to the Oscars, I don't know if it is due to having the same people voting or because the rest of the awards want to make a reputation as Oscar predictors.

Whatever it is I regrett it, as it has taken away all the fun of the aard seasons away, and even from the Oscars. Since, after having every group rewarding the same people over and over again, you already know who is winning each category.

More variety and a difference of opinion would be very welcomed, and the BAFTA's should be a part of it.

In any case, I wanted to make a poll different from the classic who's your favorite for each award, which, just as with the ceremonies themselves. Becomes repetitive.

This year has been a bit less predictable with several films in the running for Best Picture, but perhaps it will not seem that way by the time the Oscars come around.

This is a great idea for a poll. My vote will go to either Jean de Florette or Bicycle Thieves. What an exquisite list of films.

May I suggest just two edits?

Oh, if you want this to qualify for consideration for the home page, the "The" in the title shouldn't be capitalized. (So it would be "BAFTA Winners the Oscar Passed On). 'Really good title, btw.
