Lists: Allow subcategories in user lists

IMDB has user lists. It would be great for users to be able to further organize these lists with subcategories, that the user can insert to further distinguish the list. For example, if there is a list of movies to look forward to in 2013, subcategories could include genres, month of release, or anything else the user wished to further distinguish.

You already can - the sidebar lets you filter the list for most of those things (I am unsure there would be much call for listing by month but if you sort by date it will do that). If you need more you can click on to the advanced search page through "view all filters".

I am referring to having physical written heading within my list without having to search, which I am wondering is something IMDB could possibly add.

The problem is that there are so many options, IMDB would struggle to second guess what it is someone wants, which is why they offer all the options so people can decide for themselves.

If you like you can add a number of relevant links to the list description - I'm sure I have at least one where I apologise about the length of it and offer a couple of options to trim to down to say full-length films, which would be something like:

[link=LIST_URL?title_type=feature,video,tv_movie]full-length films[/link]

Insert subcategory/title
Between #_____ and ______

And for editing you could just drag the boundaries to reshape the subcategory or drag movies in or out

I think it would be a great idea to be able to sort your lists in folders. It would be very handy to organize them neatly.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Creating a Sub Category option in the List section.

I love keeping all my movies in the List section of IMDB to serve as both an easy reference when suggesting a movie for someone and for keeping a tally of those movies I liked but can easily forget about after awhile.

One thing I wish I had the option of doing is that after adding a category for movies, to then be able to make sub categories off that main branch that would allow them to be more individually organized by their specific characteristics.

For example:

(main category)
Historical Movies

(subcategories)
             - 18th century
             - 19th
             -  Medieval
             -  Ancient
             -  etc...

Rather than having to make individual lists for each one, I think it would be a great benefit to simply click on a single folder that would then drop down a list of other folders with your selected categories, much like in Windows when opening and exploring the system's folders.

Cheers

I think this is an excellent idea.
