Sorting actors/directors/etc titles by votes or ratings is no longer useful

It seems that today IMDb decided to destroy its extremely useful Filmographies function, where I can't even estimate how often I use it a day.

Until now, each page for persons on IMDb had a handy link on the left where you could sort the person's page by certain parameters such as votes, ratings, year, genre etc., all shown for their departments respectively (being their activity as a director, writer, actor, stunt or soundtrack department or even as themselves). This made it easy to determine which work was most popular, relevant or acclaimed for these persons. Here are two examples for the work of Kenneth Brannagh as a Director, sorted by rating and by votes:

Note that Kenneth Brannagh's work as a producer for the Wallander series also is listed in the category below, but can easily be ignored if I'm just interested in his efforts as a director (for example). Even the fact that he appears in the absurdly superfluous "Thanks" section of The Avengers is reflected, but I never come to scroll that far.

Now see what they have replaced those handy links with: A general search for titles with the person, all categories mixed together, without any possibility to restrict it to certain acting or directing departments. In the case of Kenneth Brannagh, it looks like this:

Good luck trying to find out what he has to do with these 332 (!!) titles whatsoever.

I am beyond mad how IMDb manages to kill every function that has been simple and useful about it, while there still is no possibility to get the most basic simple statistics as calculated on IVHA back in the day (R.I.P.).

Note that even filtering by title type doesn't help because the search still makes no distinction for different production roles.

I am at a loss for words ... or at least words I would say in public. As stated by the original poster, the sorting ratings by filmography is extremely useful.

I believe it is was a major mistake to remove ratings by filmography.

I will miss the old functionality.

Simply stunning they've done this.  I'm on IMDB just about every day.  Near as i can tell it happened sometime on Friday 12/6.  I was checking rankings for C B. DeMille and tops was "Sunset Blvd".  Could have sworn that was a Billy Wilder movie.  Learn something new every day, I guess.

No way this stands.  People are going to go apesh*t.

I agree completely. I used "sort by vote" A LOT and now it's completely useless. Why remove a good thing that works? Change it back, PLEASE.

This is terrible. Please allow the choice to change it back or make it more compact.

As a huge movie geek and IMDb lover I was indeed devastated by this terrible choice. PLEASE bring it back! I used the "by votes" and "by ratings" links several times a day, and now they are COMPLETELY USELESS!

No official word yet.

This is where having an option to filter/sort by role would come in very handy - I've thought it before but now it is vital. Worth a suggestion?

What I will miss the most is the summary table at the bottom.
I see no reason why this couldn't be added into sidebar for these kinds of searches - it might be handy to have a context-specific summary in the sidebar. This could be part of the updating of the search sidebar which I'm quietly hopeful will eventually be introduced:

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/add_the_filter_options_to_the_sidebar_of_the_search_results

We'll have to see what happens down the line (this needs more urgent tweaks to be workable) but I'd store that away and perhaps throw in as a suggestion once things start improving with this feature.

Adult titles are now completely omitted from the vote/rating search results (nothing to do with IMDb's adult filter), which makes it impossible to find the most important films of, say, John Holmes.

I've bumped that thread to see if there has been any progress - if this change is going to work there are a few extra pieces of the jigsaw to slot into place and that is one of them.

I just noticed this now. Let's just say I was not pleased by this change. I suppose it can be made to work if sorting fields are introduced that lets you sort one sort of credits from another, although it would still be a huge step back from how it was before. There you could see all credits on one page. In this new view it's paginated with 100 credits per page, and will be a complete pain going through for people with several hundred or even thousands of credits; after all - each episode of a TV-series they've been in is listed separately on this list, meaning that many people who've done mainly TV work will get lists spanning more than 10 pages of credits in this view.

In short; stop this senescence! You've done many bad changes before, some of which I didn't even think possible to top, but this one has proved me wrong...

I just noticed that all hope isn't completely lost (yet anyway); you can still get the old view by manually changing the URL of a person, by adding "/filmorate" or "/filmovote" behind the "nm???????" part of the URL (removing "/reference" from the URL if you use the reference view). For example: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000489/filmovote

Looks like they did it to the keywords page too

Here's the one for Kenneth Branagh
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=100&sort=moviemeter&explore=keywords&role=nm0000110

It used to be that you got a nice list of all the keywords with all the relevant titles listed under them.

I really hope this is just a bug and will be fixed soon. If this was changed intentionally, the person who thought of it should find a new job where he/she can't do as much damage, because this is certainly the worst idea of the year.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
New feaure - a huge step back.

I really liked the feature where you can sort titles made by some person by rating. It used be a very simple (not very pretty) page which did exactly what it was supposed to.

It seems that this feature was "updated" and it now provides "dynamic" results - which I guess is a good idea, however, the execution is very poor at this moment.

For example, try to list the movies directed by Clint Eastwood by user rating this way (which was very easy to do under the old system) - http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=100&sort=user_rating&explore=title_type&role=nm0000142&ref_=nm_flmg_shw_3

The results show the highest rated movies WITH Clint Eastwood, i.e. there seems to be no easy way to distinguish between movies, where he starred and movies which he directed.

In addition, these one more problem with the new feature - when I list the movies by rating I am (understandably) interested in the user ratings - however, if I have seen some of these movies already, only my rating is shown, i.e. there is no way to see the user ratings unless I open the movie page.

Like I said, I believe that moving from the old results page to the new "dynamic" results is the right way to go, but currently the new system feels like a huge downgrade, rather than upgrade. Do you plan to improve the feature in the near future?

This new feature is just worst than useless. Just go back to the old system and improve it adding a filter by type (Film, TV series, Video Games etc) because if someone directed or played in a TV serie then the films he made pr played in were lost in the list of titles. Anyway a filter like this would be really great but even without this filter the old way was still better than what you made of this page.

The advantage of sending these sort bys through the search is that you can do this, but only if they added the ability to filter by category is added first. It is why I think this is a good idea in theory, it is just that the system isn't yet ready for this.

I use to be able to search by genre and get exact numbers that they did including the multiple television episodes, now it's disastrous. It's just no longer useable plain and simple. I admire IMDb for trying to be proactive and doing things that they feel might make their website better but this isn't one of them. It has basically may the whole section almost useless. Chet Brandenburg is down for 266 westerns according to their new by genre but in reality, he did 248 westerns. It's count the series name itself Gunsmoke as in addition credit on top of the episodes of Gunsmoke he did. Plus the listings of these now take up so much space and is clearly designed for people who don't have 300 acting credits like a lot of old character actors do.

I mean does ANYONE agree with this change?  lol  Perfect example of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  Did they even discuss this with anyone before changing it?  I think its someone trying to justify their job by changing something to make themselves seem useful.  Now they're going to have to change it back to make them useful again right?  Come on IMDB throw us a bone here!  Easily the worst change in IMDB history and I've been using this site everyday since the early 90's.

could somebody please write a little program or app, so we do not have to manually type in filmorate or filmovote all the time?

Wow; they seem to have removed the listing of films when you go to an actor's or director's page altogether now. Really, this is a gap I hope gets filled by some other website soon. IMDB has made getting lists of films (ie, what a database is good at) very difficult

Fan-bloody-tastic! One of the most useful features of IMDb has just gone from useful to useless. :(  I mean; the new sorting by ratings view doesn't even include a field of how many votes the titles have, nor options for sorting them by category. It's just completely useless!

I'd have thought they'd have left this in place until they'd added functionality to the search (at a minimum being able to search/refine by category).

anybody interested in seeding a startup cinema database megasite?

No need - there are alternatives. Google "open movie database". However, you need momentum and a critical mass of users to keep the wheels on, so you don't know if you are contributing to or just getting used to a site which might disappear tomorrow.

Starting a whole new site is a bit drastical considering it the existing vote numbers and ratings we find interesting. And that information have not disappeared, just appeared in a new stupid format. So i guess the information can still be extracted somehow, if i had the knowhow i would make an app/plugin/greasemonkeyscript etc.

Yup; just found this out now. Redirects to the crappy presentation. Its extraordinary that they've abandoned viewing by director, actor etc by rating/votes... Pretty much useless to me now. I'm really baffled to the thinking behind this. And they aren't saying a thing about it, and it doesn't seem to be possible to address queries to them. Very very stupid, very very frustrating.

threre are about 10 options to sort the new rating page by "title types". would it really be that difficult to add a second box to also sort by "profession"? this would almost make the new version usable.

This subject is noted as "Acknowledged" for weeks, people talk about this, people try to find solutions etc... But there is not one single answer from the IMDB staff. I am new to this forum, I just signed in to be able to talk about this bad change they made, turning the most usefull (at least for me) movies database to a really well documented website about movies. So as I am new here maybe some people who are more used to use this forum can answer to me: do the people of IMDB ever answer or is this "acknoledged" flag just a bone thrown to us?
