Restoring the Locations Tree

A few years ago, IMDb used to keep track of all locations listed in movies and television shows in the database with a "Locations Tree", that is, a hierarchical list of all the locations known to the database. Unfortunately, I can't find any archived examples of it, but maybe other people can.

The Locations Tree was useful for helping identify locations which had been misspelled or entered into the database under more than one name for the same place.

Col Needham, CEO of IMDb, wrote in a discussion thread about the Locations Tree:
As a fan of the location tree myself, I would love to see it return too.
And he later wrote:
The best way to vote in support of this is to post it as an idea on Get Satisfaction.
So if you would like to see an organized list of locations return to IMDb, please support this idea. For more information, see the thread at http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/nest/175370852.

Hey, gromit:
Unfortunately, I can't find any archived examples of it, but maybe other people can.
What about these two screenshots?

LJ: Thanks for tracking down these screen shots which illustrate what the Location Tree was like, and thanks for your support on this idea.

Also thanks to Col, Dan, Peter, and the Mayor for their support as well.

The Locations Tree was removed without any discussion or warning. Can we please get it back?

Now, when there are mis-spelled or just badly defined locations, we can't correct them because we can't see most of them. We'll only see them if we happen to stumble upon them. The locations tree made it obvious when someone had missed out a county (or a state) or had made some other mistake.

Some of us contributors regularly monitored the tree, keeping an eye on countries that we knew well (I used to monitor the UK) and often corrected the more obvious mistakes.

BTW It's not just a matter of page views on the tree itself. The tree let us repair mistakes in locations that are now being allowed to slip through into the system.

Steve,

As someone who worked extensively on American locations, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The locations tree was a great tool and needs to be reactivated.

Just wanted to bump this because I feel the location tree is very important for contributors and, of course, for correct data.

Are there plans to one day (not one from 2012 obviously) return the Location Tree? You do know it'll help the accuracy of the database along don't you?

Marco.

As a fan of the location tree myself, I would love to see it return too. We need complete all technical migration work and upgrades before we can get to this (please see the section The Future: 2013 and beyond section on http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/thread/208876639

It is still on the list but we are still focused more on improvements to the contribution interface and reducing processing times so no specific time-frame in mind yet.

The best way to vote in support of this is to post it as an idea on Get Satisfaction.

People can vote in favor of this idea at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/restoring-the-locations-tree. I encourage the contributors who have more to say about the Locations Tree to post in that thread as well.

I would like to see the Locations Tree come back as well. It used to be my favorite part of IMDB. When it was deleted, I started spending a lot less time on IMDB. I've only recently gotten back into IMDB and the memory of the Locations Tree still stays with me.

Soma: I don't know how much it will help, but based on Col Needham's previous comment, I would recommend that supporters of the Locations Tree vote in favor of it at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/restoring-the-locations-tree.

This would be a good idea. Hopefully other customers (or users, or contributors) also feel this is a good idea and give their vote to this idea.

Maybe some more people like this feature and are willing to vote for it? And perhaps there might even be an update from a staffer??

YES PLEASE! This feature was SOOOOO cool, even just for the casual user of the site! Many MANY years back, I was able to use the tree to discover a movie filmed in the tiny town my mom grew up in, and got to show it to her, and she pointed out all these fun facts she knew about the locations, and it made for a great experience.

Now I can only replicate the same results if I ALREADY KNOW something that was filmed in a particular place AND it's accurately documented. PLEASE bring this back!

I'm not sure if I've ever seen the Locations Tree as I never owned my own computer until 2014, but it looks like something I've been wanting for years. All the computers I had used in my life before 2014 were school computers, public library ones, my dads sometimes when I was a kid for schoolwork, my mates every now and again in my teens, and my sisters when I needed to apply for jobs.

When I'm not catching up on TV shows, watching Youtube videos, editing Wikipedia, or editing and fighting with the bots on Quora, I will usually be busy writing comments or lists privately on Blogger which I'll use at a later date, as a recommendation or an argument settler.

For example I have a list of my favourite British sitcoms which I use when someone wants to know some good British sitcoms to watch. I have a list of the 6 main British TV networks, their channels, and some examples of their shows which I use to settle arguments with people who think the UK only has one TV network. And I have a list of some British TV shows, the networks who made and own them, and the American companies who are trying to claim them which I use to settle arguments with Americans who think those shows are American.

Every so often I will come to IMDB to search through all the films and TV shows which have filmed in my city Bradford, or search through the locations specifically, so I can create a list of all my city's films, TV shows and locations from multiple websites, and get them all in one place.

However I get bored, frustrated or uncomfortable quite quickly.

Here a few examples why. Sometimes I'll search for:

1 - The city without the county "Bradford" (302 results)
2 - The city with the modern county "Bradford, West Yorkshire" (17,364 results)
3 - The city with the larger historic county "Bradford, Yorkshire" (2,687 results)
4 - The city with the historic county subdivision "Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire" (28,697 results)
5 - The modern county "West Yorkshire" (17,301 results)
6 - The historic county "Yorkshire" (2,624 results)
7 - The historic county subdivision "West Riding of Yorkshire" (28,637 results)
8 - The countless towns within the city like "Keighley" (48 results)
9 - The countless towns within the city, with the city included like "Keighley, Bradford" (334 results)
10 - The countless towns within the city, with the city and modern county included like "Keighley, Bradford, West Yorkshire" (17,364 results)
11 - The countless towns within the city, with just the modern county included like "Keighley, West Yorkshire" (17,301 results)
12 - The countless towns within the city, with the city and historic county included like "Keighley, Bradford, Yorkshire" (2,687 results)
13 - The countless towns within the city, with just the historic county included like "Keighley, Yorkshire" (2,624 results)
14 - The countless towns within the city, with the city and historic county subdivision included like "Keighley, Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire" (28,698 results)
15 - The countless towns within the city, with just the historic county subdivision included like "Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire" (28,638 results)
16 - The countless neighbourhoods and villages, within the towns of the city like "Haworth" (29 results)
17 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with just the town included like Haworth, Keighley" (73 results)
18 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with just the city included like "Haworth, Bradford" (321 results)
19 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with just the modern county included like "Haworth, West Yorkshire" (17,304 results)
20 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with just the historic county included like "Haworth, Yorkshire" (2,628 results)
21 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with the town and city included like "Haworth, Keighley, Bradford" (351 results)
22 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with the town and modern county included like "Haworth, Keighley, West Yorkshire" (17,304 results)
23 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with the town and historic county included like "Haworth, Keighley, Yorkshire" (2,628 results)
24 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with the town, city and modern county included like "Haworth, Keighley, Bradford, West Yorkshire" (17,366 results)
25 - The countless villages, within the towns of the city, with the town, city and historic county included like "Haworth, Keighley, Bradford, Yorkshire" (2,690 results)

Etc etc.

Now can you imagine how many more different search term combinations there would be for the 100's of neighbourhoods, villages and towns of the city if I started adding the historic county subdivisions, the country, and/or sovereign state too.

If there was a Locations Tree I wouldn't have to keep searching through pages and pages of the same results (a lot of which only have the word West in common), with only the occasional new result, and clicking on each film, TV show or episode one by one to see the locations, as there results in the Locations Tree would be fewer. Therefore I'd only need to click on the individual locations around Bradford, West Yorkshire on the Locations Tree to see each film, TV show or episode filmed there, so would be quicker, and less frustrating overall.

I'd estimate the total number of films and TV shows to have filmed in Bradford, West Yorkshire throughout it's history, is between 500 and 1000, but I might be surprised. There might be 1000's of Bradford, West Yorkshire locations mixed in with those 28,000+ search results which I don't already know about. Plus there's still 100's of locations from Bradford, West Yorkshire based productions that I know of, which haven't been added to IMDB yet too. Every month I seem to find out about at least one historic film or TV show I didn't already know about. For example, just yesterday I found out that Treasure Hunt (1982-1989) filmed in at least 2 villages and 2 towns of my city, so 4 overall areas in total, plus there's all the individual locations within those areas on top too. Along with at least 20 new films or TV shows every year.
