Bull Durham (1988)
Ref # 190607-131027-740000
The only changes I made were to add links to the names of the songwriters and the performer.
Before
"When a Woman Loves a Man" Written by Charlie Midnight & Dan Hartman Performed by Joe Cocker
The song was incorrectly credited in the film to the writers of "When A Man Love A Woman"
After
"When a Woman Loves a Man" Written by Charlie Midnight & Dan Hartman Performed by Joe Cocker
The song was incorrectly credited in the film to the writers of "When A Man Love A Woman"
My submission was declined.
Your contribution has been declined. We did not capture a specific reason during processing.
Can anyone from staff provide an explanation as to why? I cannot see that I have done anything differently to any of the other Soundtrack submissions I have made.

Reason for not processing possibly explained in the following:
What has happened is that somehow the incorrect onscreen credit was corrected, but by rule may not meet guidelines, as it is not what is onscreen. There may be a question on IMDb's part whether it needs to be removed and replaced with the actual incorrect but correct on screen credit. Therefore your submission to add links may have been declined because the actual soundtrack credit itself is suspect.
Hope that makes sense.
Can't wait for the IMDb response on this one!
Cheers

After further research, your submission should be rejected not because of anything you did, but because it is what I suspected. Someone submitted a correction based on an incorrect assumption. The two people credited, "Produced" the Joe Cocker version. They did not write it. The movie credits the correct original writers as it should. The IMDb database should by rule only list the onscreen credit. The 45 record that was released shows them as producing but not writing the song. They may have done a minor rewrite of a song with no copyright protection. Then claimed it as theirs. The Producers of the movie chose to give the credit to the original writers from 1934. Hanighen, Jenkins, and Mercer. Therefore the credit needs to be changed to reflect what is on screen, and your submission is invalid. Even if it was rewritten to the point of not being the same song, the onscreen credit should prevail.

Also the "WHEN A" needs to be removed from the title also.

Listening to the jazz tune and the Joe Cocker record, respectively, I don't hear a "minor rewrite". For one thing, the lyrics are completely different.

Person A enters the song into the ‘Soundtrack’ section, with the correct data from the film’s screen credits.
Person B notices the song and confuses it with Percy Sledge’s ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’. Using sources other than the screen credits, Person B identifies the IMDB songwriters as being incorrect and replaces them with the ones for Sledge’s song.
Person B then submitted a correction which was accepted by IMDB.
It is interesting to note that several sites on the web all credit Hartman and Midnight for the song on Cocker's "Unchained Heart" album, compounding the confusion.

A Google search for “joe cocker when a woman loves a man” returns a YouTube clip of Cocker singing the correct song.
A Google search for “joe cocker when a man loves a woman” returns a YouTube clip of Cocker singing the Percy Sledge song, but in the ‘Other recordings of this song’ section it offers
When a Woman Loves a Man by Billie Holiday
When a Woman Loves a Man by Gordon Jenkins
So there is some confusion between the two songs.
Anyhow, we seem to have resolved the problem.
I guess the best approach is to correct the song back to what it should be.

Otherwise it could be added as trivia (or goofs, if the film credit is considered a mistake).

I have corrected the songwriters and added a Trivia item explaining the situation.
