Rating purpose and subjectiveness

Current votes show what others liked.
But the average Joe is only interested in what oneself will like.

Votes are so highly subjectives...
Some like romance, other action.
Some like special effects, others story.
Any franchise with a cult following is skewed high.
Culture can turn the same thing a masterpiece of cringe-worthy.

This is a big problem when using IMDB to hunt for what to watch.

I often pick 8s that I end up rating 6.
Oh well, disappointed and moving on.

But also sometimes accidentally watch 6s that I end up rating 8.
And this cannot be countered.

Of course guessing what one likes is no small matter.

The easiest to implement, but most tedious to the user would be to allow votes on aspects of each "movie". (story, graphics, characters etc)
And it would still be vulnerable to bias.

The powerful, future-proof way requires serious data analysis and probably some AI voodoo to extract groups of common interest.
