Question about keywords and more keywords that probably should be merged

I took the advice of a user to edit titles that have misspelled or duplicate keywords when there are a few titles to edit. However, this doesn't seem to get rid of the keyword. For example, the keyword "walter-reed-hospital" was used once and I changed it to the more frequently used "walter-reed-army-medical-center". However, the keyword "walter-reed-hospital" has not gone away though it now shows 0 titles using it. Will they eventually go away?

Now on to keywords that should probably be merged. These all refer to the same thing:

u.s.-mexico-border
u.s.-mexican-border
us-mexican-border
mexican-american-border

mexican-border should probably be merged into this group as well, though it is non-specific (Mexico only has two borders and this being a US based site, it probably means the US/Mexico border and not the Mexico/Guatemala border which also has a keyword.)

Also, these are the same:

texas-mexico-border
mexico-texas-border

Thanks, yes, this is the right approach.  We have opened a ticket with the appropriate team to fix the issue with them not disappearing completely when there are no instances left in IMDb.

That's an okay approach if an alternate or misspelled keyword has a few entries. If you look at the keywords I listed, this would be a massive effort to individually change hundreds of titles. There has to be a better way for keyword merging than to post it here and hope it gets attention.

It looks like keywords are now being deleted when the number of titles on them reaches zero. Thank you.

I went ahead and changed all of the u.s.-mexican-borderus-mexican-border and mexico-united-states-border into u.s.-mexico-border.

This now leaves three keywords with large numbers of titles associated with them. u.s.-mexico-border (currently 154 but soon to have more), mexican-american-border (139 titles) and mexican-border (196 titles) that are probably easier to handle by having a staff member merge them.
