PS: The Godfathers of Action

  • Idea
  • Updated 2 days ago
Intro:

There are actors that did quite a good job on the action genre. They are icons in their own way of being a action movie star. Their movies claim cult status. No matter if it's about war, man to man combat, scince fiction or what ever - all of them are known for their work. Which of these well trained muscle packed fellows is your lead actioner? Give us the gym results here.

Rules:

The action icon should be a actioner since years, no superhero or supervillain movie, there are 5 movies to be named for the action icons' filmography, no less, no more, exact 5 ! It should somehow fit to the other icons.

List:

Well, I wasn't really kidding, but to us weirdos who like terrible B movies, he is a classic action star.  Maybe I should do a separate poll for that.  :D
I think Seagal is reeeeaaaaaaaalllllllly cheesy, but that's why I like him.  ;)

I don't know if Kurt Russell meets the action requirement:
- Escape from New York/La
- Big Trouble in Little China
- Tango and Cash
- Tombstone
- Soldier
- Poseidon
- Executive Decision
- Deepwater Horizon

Now, from my memory, I would have said that he has more action work, but those films aren't listed as Action on IMDb, but as Thrillers.

Also, I'm guessing you're gonna piss some people off, if you don't add Harrison Ford to the list:
- Star Wars
- Indiana Jones
- The Fugitive
- Air Force One
- Clear and Present Danger/Patriot Games
- Force 10 from Navarone

It seems like IMDb also lists Blade Runner as Action (among other genres), but I really, really wouldn't count it as an action movie.

Well, I don't really think that Harrison Ford is an action icon. He had some action moments, yes. But ... 'Blade Runner'? Really? For me and many others this movie was boring as a sleeping pill. The first one and also the remake. Ford is a great actor, no question - but I don't really consider him as an action icon over all.

I think Indiana Jones alone warrants him to be on the list... You have Sean Connery who is most famous for Bond so not sure why Harrison cant' be included.

Most movies with him I remember are like 'Reagarding Henry'. I always thought that he's a little lame in action, except the Indiana Jones movies. But when I look at the whole filmography - he really had several actioners. I don't know why I don't get him on my radar when someone mentions action movies. Well, I'll take your both suggestion to the list.

I agree he isn't a physical actor who does a lot his own stunts and fight choreography, but in his action movies he plays more more of an everyday man type of action hero who most audiences can relate towards- similar to Bruce Willis.

Yes, I did: that's why I said "I saw that you added Harrison. 'Good choice..."

'Want to know something weird? I saw someone crossing the street today that looked exactly like him. I suppose it's possible that it was him but unlikely. Still, I couldn't help but to think that it was him. If not, the resemblance was uncanny.

No, no, I didn't mean to merge the lists. I meant you should add the new list to this very conversation. If that's okay with you.

These two lists share a lot of entries, but, in all fairness, their themes are very much different.
Yours is about actors who had action roles when they were over the age of 50.
Breumaster's is about influential action stars - who just so happen to be (mostly) older actors.

Think of it like this:
Let's say you have TWO face-off polls, both of them with only two entries - Superman and Thor.
One poll asks "which of them two is your favorite?", while the other poll asks; "which of them two would win in a one-on-one fight?".
Visually the same, but thematically different.

No, it doesn't. Godfather is not the same as Grandfather.
I first became a godfather when I was 12 years of age, while my godchild was also 12 - even being 1 month older than me!

But aside from its original meaning, the term 'godfather' can also refer to a person who was influential in something, or a pioneer - it doesn't have to do anything with one's age.

In this list, the term 'godfather of action' refers to those actors who were influential in creating a cult of an 'action movie star', or the actors who primarily starred in action roles, so much so that it became a part of their identity.

I shall give a simple example of how yours and his lists differ:
- Your list has Christopher Lee, because of his role in Star Wars. However, he is ineligible for ''Godfathers of Action'' list because he wasn't an action movie star; if the list has been named ''Godfathers of Horror'', he should be in it, no doubt.
That's why Breumaster's list doesn't have some of your picks, such as DeNiro, McDiarmid, Downey, Nicholson, etc. - they starred in action films when they were over the age of 50, but they are not action movie stars.

Sorry, but a godfather has to be a guiding angel to his protective. Without wanting to bother you. Don't you think you were a little young? Normaly a godfather is like the aunt, the uncle or another family member that can give the young guy or girl a break. Someone to tell problems with the parents and other things the parents can't help with?

This word is intendetly used by 'The Godfather' to show the misfigured similarities of a family and "the family" (mafia, Mobsters). You won't tell your family when you are a drug addictive, but "the family" knows. Do you understand the irony?

I used that term in a case of irony to these actors, I've put on the list. But I want to state clear that I not want to insinuate anyone one of them to be a mobster or mafia godfather. It was just irony, but yes I meant old and/or experienced action stars who have a filmography that tells you - they are pretty sure actioners. And they are Icons! ;D

Sorry about the extended discussion on this. I knew that is what you meant by using "Godfather". It baffled me that Mihailo did not get the concept.
:):)
Now what do we do about our similar polls that are only different in name alone and some overlapping actors?
Can you avoid the duplications?
That way both could go live together.
Just a thought.......
:):)

Oh, and I really like that you have Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Rothrock on Your Godmothers Poll!!!

I think it's still another poll idea. Maybe I did mine unconsciously after seeing yours. That can happen. If you want me to kick it, please say it freely. I'm not about to steal your ideas. But if you think so, I'll skip it. I would just give you the (very friendly meant) advice to pick up some of the images, I used for this idea. They look better, imho. Just look at the two images you posted and compare. My list looks more clear and I'm not offended, if you use them. But maybe if I pick another title? What about "The International Godfathers of Action" (Because on my list there are many Asiens)? Please tell me, what you think about. And sorry, I really didn't want to bother you. And maybe some people will find action godfathers of other continents (Europe, Afrika, South-America, Aussies)?

In my country, being a godfather in someone's baptism means the two are bonded not by friendship or blood, but spiritually. We use the word kum, and the English word godfather doesn't quite apply - a godbrother makes more sense. Kum can be the same age or older than the one who is being baptized.
If the kum doing the baptism is older, then he should act as a mentor-figure in his godchild's life.
If they are the same age, then they should be there for each other, keep each other safe.

Being so kind? Dude! Ed persuaded you that his poll and your poll are the same - which they are not! And now you're gonna change your poll because you had some overlapping entries with his poll? Breumaster, there are over 7000 polls on IMDb - of course there are going to be similar ones!

Your poll had a good criteria:
There are actors that did quite a good job on the action genre. They are icons in their own way of being a action movie star. Their movies claim cult status. No matter if it's about war, man to man combat, scince fiction or what ever - all of them are known for their work. The action icon should be a actioner since years, no superhero or supervillain movie, there are 5 movies to be named for the action icons' filmography, no less, no more, exact 5 ! It should somehow fit to the other icons.

and Ed's poll had a good criteria:
The actors in this poll are or were packing them in at the movies at the age of 50 or older.

Both poll ideas are valid, and both are, in my opinion - good. Why change it?

Before you two have made changes, this was the state of your lists:

Ed's list had 35 actors, yours had 26.
15 actors were shared between the lists.
11 actors were exclusive to your list.
20 actors were exclusive to Ed's list.
And, as I've said before, the ideas of the two poll suggestions were not the same.

I believe that makes the two lists sufficiently different.
